I'm transitioning and I'm trying to stock up on staples, but I don't have a clue. So far its seems I will need a lot of sunflower seeds. What would be the top ten food items you would recommend a budding raw foodist to have? Thanks in advance!
Depending on what's in season, but generally:
Bananas
Apples
Pears
Lemons
Oranges
Grapefruit
Berries (any good ones I can find)
Lettuce
Other leafy greens
Mangoes
Papayas....oops that's 11, well you catch my drift I'm sure ;)
Most important staples before anything else are fresh fruit and veggies in my house always.
Mixed baby greens
cucumbers
garlic
raw tahini
lots of seaweed
frozen berries
lemons
unripe avocado (so I'm always sure I'll have a nice, unbruised fresh one in a few days!)
high quality olive oil
fresh ginger
gosh i'm trying to think if i even have any dry staples....salt and pepper, cumin, flax seeds, quinoa (for sprouting), raisins and dates, agave (arguable not really raw), honey, almond butter... i guess that's all i can think of. i don't love nuts/seeds or dried fruit so that kind of stuff just ends up sitting in my pantry forever. all that stuff just makes me feel solid on the inside. that's probably why you got so many juicy things as answers!
Yeah, I would pretty much stick to my list as my staples. Those are the things I have to have in the house at all times. If I have those things I can throw together a basic meal in a pinch and a really good meal if I have a few other things on hand.
I think when you're raw there are less in the way of dry staples since your focus is on fresh fruits and veggies.
all fruits
all veggies
sunflower seeds
olive oil
sundried tomatoes
flax crackers (if need crunchy stuff)
raw olives
avocados
nori
dates
agave (as stated not officially raw)
I also recommend that you get a raw cookbook to guide you if you are just transitioning into raw..
YUM! That looks sooooo good, I love sushi so much but haven't had it years, since I don't get the conventional stuff anymore ( I call them mercury rolls) and I'm too lazy to make something like this.....will you come over and make it for me, pleee...
There is a great fruit wholesaler in town, specializing in Local, organic fruit actually.
All I need is a few people, a car and one willing person to go up there with me at some unholy hour (they close at 9am) once a week and it's beautiful fruit ...
Hey, Great pic! Looks refreshing. Also I love the pics of your sprouted coconuts, they look sooo delicious! I watched the video with you eating a sprouted coconut and boy do I want to try it too!..
