Give it to me Raw

Hello lovely experts,

I have a question for you. I've had some blood tests results done recently and it seems I am very low in B12, so I have to get B12 injections. Fair enough, I have no argument with that and have searched this site and found some useful information thank you.

However, it came as a bit of a surprise to me as I have been taking B12 supplements for over a year now. I had my blood tested in about Feb 08 and the doc prescribed B12 supplements (this was when I was a meat and dairy eater), and so when I went vegan I made sure this was a supplement I was always taking just to be on the safe side. So, I asked the doc how I could be deficient when I was already taking supplements, and she said it's probably a problem with absorbtion. Having now read about this, it seems to make perfect sense.

Then I had a lightbulb moment. If my body is having problems absorbing B12 then could it be having problems absorbing other vitamins and minerals? For example - calcium, and maybe that's why the enamel on my teeth is wearing away (very badly - 3 different dentists have asked if I'm anorexic as the enamel erosion is so bad - I'm not and never have been). Maybe if I'm not absorbing enough through my digestive system my body is leaching it out of my teeth to use elsewhere. And that could apply to other vitamins and minerals too I guess. If that's the case, what can I do about it? More injections of vitamins and minerals - is that possible?

I've googled it, but am not really happy with the information I can find - it seems pretty shallow and focussed on celebs like Britney Spears Gerri Halliwell getting vitamin injections to boost their energy while on tour etc. I'm more interested in the proper health benefits and risks etc.

What do you reckon? Any advice much appreciated as always.

What are you eating?

I tested low in many vitamins and minerals including b12 when I first went raw. It's always been an issue of absorption with me. I supplemented with b12 for a bit, and still tested low. I started eating 811 style and just got tested last week and I'm high in everything now! Even my zinc was perfect which I was worried about because I usually only get about 50% the rda.

It seems that once you clean out your digestive tract, you start to absorb more nutrients. Almost too obvious to say lol. I still have my b12 supplement and I'll chew a tablet maybe once a week just to be safe, but I honestly don't think I even need it anymore. My b12 score was very high and I might even be overdoing it by taking this supplement so I use it very sparingly.

If your teeth are fallin apart, your quite likely too acidic and your body is using the calcium in your teeth to buffer your blood ph. A diet high in fruits and veggies will solve that problem.

It could mean you are low on hydrochloric acid (which would mean your minerals could be low too) or you could be lacking intrinsic factor in your gut. That is more of a genetic defect.

I also don't absorb it well so I take activated B12 lozenges. Activated (aka coenzymated) means your body does not need to do any converting to make it usable. The active forms are dibencozide and methylcobalamin. These are the best forms for those who don't convert it. Regular B12 (cobalamin) is ineffective for such people.

How is B 12 like methylcobalamin and hydoroxycobalamin made? blood tests aren't always reliable, the MMA urine test is more reliable. If you don't have any symptoms you may not be B 12 deficient.

Dont do injections & medicines.

If you look anorexic or people think you are then do check if you are a Vata body constituency (Ayurveda).

People with Vata have weak digestive fire and find it hard to absorb raw food. Hence cooked foods are recommended until they can increase digestive fire based on Yoga, Pranayama and/or certain spices.

Forget about B12. I dont think it exists as an isolated critical element. Most Indians who are vegetarians have never had meat... probably go through life and live 100 without any B12.

Hi Abhi,

Yes I'm vata type. And because of that, I do eat some cooked food (but very clean cooked - still no wheat or sugar etc, mostly just veggies in soups and gently cooked stews). My body wasn't really coping well with being 100% raw and my kinesiologist recommended eating about 30% cooked 70% raw.

Very interesting thank you - where can I read more about what I can do to increase the digestive fire?

I was able to download an Ayurveda PDF online. There were some links I had posted to Google Books pages on another discussion that pointed out Raw & Cooked issues.

Digestive fire - Talk to a real practitioner preferably. Also you can read which spices help Vata types.

Cumin seed lightly stirred in ghee or oil is for sure a great digestive (Its the first thing added to almost EVERY Indian dish). There's bunch more for my Pitta the Vata stuff I cant remember..

Seriously, meet a practitioner who can determine your Dominant & Secondary types. Also, tell you what elements are imbalanced and what foods will help.

Hi Lucy I listened to this audio a few weeks back which touches on B12 injections and the difference between testing the actual cell for nutrient deficiencies and the standard tests given at the doctors for B12 and other nutrients.

Crikey Paddy, how is it that you know everything about everything! Thanks for this, I'll have a stop, look and listen.

To others who are curious about what I eat, thank you so much for your interest and I appreciate your advice. I am vegan, wheat free and sugar free and mostly eat what my body tells me to. About 70% raw as my body seems to like some cooked as previously mentioned. A typical day would be:

Breakfast: Smoothie - mango, pineapple, spinach, goji berries, ground flax seeds, henp protein powder, Udo's oil or hemp oil
Lunch: Soup (cooked) - tomatoes and veggies normally, maybe some beans in it like canellini
Mid afternoon: Nut milk - sesame seeds, hulled hemp seeds, maybe some almonds or other nuts, a few apricot kernels, cacao, dates, banana
Dinner might be another soup or some sort of high veg dish like veggie chilli. Or maybe a raw soup or raw curry, or maybe just another green smoothie with different fruit and greens such as lettuce or celery

Snacks would be a raw bar like a Lara bar.

It does vary, but that's typical.

One thing that Brian Clement talked about is that B12 injections only increase the b12 in the fluid where the actual blood cells stay deficient. Therefore the lift from b12 injections are only temporary and not really addressing the real problem. In some of the videos below he talks about the reason more than half of the population is B12 deficient.

I think any deficiency would have an effect on how all other vitamins and minerals would be absorbed as I think everything is inter linked.
