Give it to me Raw

So, my dears, I was watching the Renegade Health show today (renegadehealth.com) and they were interviewing this cat from rawfoods.com about popular foods in the raw food realm that aren't really health promoting. He wasn't super specific but he cited things like cacao (super controversial, I know!), agave nectar (apparently any agave that isn't clear isn;t truly raw?) and the one that really floored me was Braggs Liquid Aminos. I mean, it's pretty clear to me that those liquic aminos didn't drip out like sap from a tree, you know, some processing was obviously involved but this guy says there is naturally occuring MSG in braggs! WTF mates? What do you guys think? Any other foods that come to mind? what can I use instead of braggs in my super hero sauce?
thanks in advance my darlings. mwah.

merci, charles. very helpful, though slightly sad, list.

i do prefer to ear only fresh live no question foods but now i'm for want of a truly raw dressing for my greens.

Hey Chel,

Interesting! For one thing, MSG (monosodium glutamate) is not naturally occurring in Braggs, nor is it added. MSG is usually made from beet sugar and added to addict the brain to a taste (trick of the trade for fast food corporations and so on). I think the guy was confused because free glutamic acid, which is a component of MSG, is naturally occuring when protein is broken down into free form amino acids - but it's not bad for you and occurs all the time, even during the process of fermentation.

I also invite everyone to open up an agave plant and see for themselves that 1. the nectar is yellowish, not clear and 2. that it tastes like absolute shit when it's raw and will cause contact dermatitis. Agave nectar is never raw. It is just like maple syrup in that it must be cooked for it to gain its sweet, syrupy properties. I also encourage everyone to do some research on how agave nectar is processed (the patented process involves black mold - delicious!) and how it behaves just like corn syrup in the body.

Anyway, keep using Braggs if you like it. It's definitely not raw, but it's not like you're eating McDonalds. No harm no foul ;D Definitely avoid agave nectar and switch to raw honey, green stevia leaf, or lo han.

I would stick with nama shoyu or (cooked) tamari rather than braggs. braggs seems pretty controversial.... and ive heard of people feelng ill from it...

thanks babes.

i can always tell when i eat something less agreeable because i can taste it and feel it for a lot longer after everything else is assimilated. i do keep things as simple as possible but I like to have at least one big sit down large love salad w/ greens and sprouts everyday so a tasty dressing is key for me. kinda keep playing around, i guess. or try eating it sans dressing. sometimes i eat handfuls of baby spinach plain and dig it. hmmm.

We've opted out these not "pure raw" foods 2 years ago. Feeling much better & healthier.
SOMETIMES these not "pure raw" ingredients present at potlucks or raw restaurants, then some symptons will appear with us. But we love potlucks too much, just be frank & ask what's in a dish.
I'm also agree with most things on Chris's list. We have experienced bad things from having these foods.
Have you got hemp sauce in USA? It can be alternative to soy & braggs. Big fans of Wild Raw Seaweeds are great for salty taste. We also use wild raw honey, dates as sweetners. Hope this helps.

...of course I don't mind, Charles. Wow, Thanks for comments about the list from everyone, it's very nice to hear.

I am in the middle of research for an update and am glad to say that I have confirmed that shelled walnuts ARE RAW!!! Some walnuts have been fumigated though I am in the process of confirming if choosing organic will guarantee us all avoidance of these fumigated walnuts.

Interestingly enough I have found out that 99% of the worlds walnuts are owned by 1 company. Borges (a Spanish co.) bought into the California family's operation that produces 'all' the USA grown walnuts not to long ago. I imagine many more foods are this way now.

Cheers, Chris

Hi Chel when I first went raw (the first time and yes I get better each time hehe) I noticed I would eat anything they said was raw like the choc and agave and all those packaged foods on line like raweo's (yummy). And I would eat tons of nuts to try to get full. The beginning of raw was crazy for me because back then I had no support. Thank god for this place.

I did finally wake up to the knowledge that for my body these foods were probally not healthier than like steamed veggies or a good peice of salmon grilled. And I was spending so much money at rawfood.com which they loved.

Also with the dehydrated foods. For me they are just as hard to stop eating as cooked food. They excite my tastebuds too much and I do not want to stop. I just have an addictive thing with food.

But I have learned never say never to a food. Just makes me want it more.
Just my ideas thanks for letting me share.

All almonds sold in California are treated with a gaz or a chemical, in both cases the almond does not sprout, it is hence dead.
