Give it to me Raw

So how bad do you want to be in denial? How much will you grasp to dogma, not facing the truth that we do so much to harm ourselves?

We rarely listen to our bodies, instead we get whisked away by "gurus" or charismatic people who are the farthest thing from those who bare the truth.

Most of these ego-maniacal know-it-alls are full of it. Not sure about that? Want to know how a strict vegan diet can deplete your body of B12? Read about our friend Harley, aka Durianrider.

From http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=695434:
...remember, Harley completely cuts out anything to do with animal products and relies purely on raw fruit, veggies and nuts. His results have got Susie really worried: "My biggest concern is that your vitamin B12 is one of the lowest clinical levels we have ever seen!"
Harley's B12 was just 78. That's drastically lower than the normal intake range from 145 to 637 and means our vegan could be susceptible to anemia, blurry vision and loss of feeling in the hands and feet in the long term. "In the case of vegans, it's really up to them if they decide to supplement with B12. It is primarily from animal-based food so it's probably worth him discussing it with his GP or medical specialist," says Susie.

Still sure that a diet that you NEED to supplement is the best one for humans? Hmm..... it seems that the DR's take on the 80/10/10 is one of the biggest scams. Follow DR to illness if you like, it's your choice.

What do you have to lose, besides your teeth? Oh yes..., poor vision, no feeling in your hands, and anemia. Oh, to dogma!

it's not about negative vibes... this is much more important than something as trivial as vibes. i'm not putting him down -- i'm putting the scientific result of the diet out there. having the truth withheld is much more insidious.

You are taking a snapshot in time of the results of one individual and applying the results to argue against a particular diet regime. You give no indication of when these results were given and offer no knowledge if these numbers still hold true for this person today. How is this the scientific result of this particular diet?

Jason when you lift another you lift yourself.

Some people need a little critics to be lifted, when they lack any self-critics, and are not able to...

They just attract critics, you know law of attraction...

i agree, lift up your brother, or go pee somewhere else

I personally think DR is onto something good. If I ever get any symptoms of B12 deficiency, then I'll alter my diet, of course. So far, eating similarly to him has brought me more energy, halted the previously-predictable decline of my teeth, halted the previously-predictable decline of my vision...

surely I would not follow him off a cliff. I'm monitoring the state of my health closely, and if I ever get any clues from my body or my medical test results that 811 is not the way to go, I'll try something else. But for now, the things that my body and my doctor have been telling me are quite positive.

I think you are taking a wise approach Bart. Watch B12, it takes a while to decline to overt symptoms and problems can manifest before it becomes obvious what's actually occurring. Be well!

The article is two years old. I think it was around two years ago that Harley switched to 80/10/10 (and also increased his consumption of organic fruit, foraged fruit etc).

I remember Harley saying that he had had low B12, but that this had righted itself.

Did you check with him that this is the current situation re his B12, rather than how it was before he went 80/10/10?

It would be pretty amazing if just not eating so many nuts/so much fat could right B12 levels. I can't think of a biological explanation for that one, but it would be interesting. Of course I would love to see DRs new numbers....but then again I don't really trust him to tell the truth.
