Give it to me Raw

So how bad do you want to be in denial? How much will you grasp to dogma, not facing the truth that we do so much to harm ourselves?

We rarely listen to our bodies, instead we get whisked away by "gurus" or charismatic people who are the farthest thing from those who bare the truth.

Most of these ego-maniacal know-it-alls are full of it. Not sure about that? Want to know how a strict vegan diet can deplete your body of B12? Read about our friend Harley, aka Durianrider.

From http://health.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=695434:
...remember, Harley completely cuts out anything to do with animal products and relies purely on raw fruit, veggies and nuts. His results have got Susie really worried: "My biggest concern is that your vitamin B12 is one of the lowest clinical levels we have ever seen!"
Harley's B12 was just 78. That's drastically lower than the normal intake range from 145 to 637 and means our vegan could be susceptible to anemia, blurry vision and loss of feeling in the hands and feet in the long term. "In the case of vegans, it's really up to them if they decide to supplement with B12. It is primarily from animal-based food so it's probably worth him discussing it with his GP or medical specialist," says Susie.

Still sure that a diet that you NEED to supplement is the best one for humans? Hmm..... it seems that the DR's take on the 80/10/10 is one of the biggest scams. Follow DR to illness if you like, it's your choice.

What do you have to lose, besides your teeth? Oh yes..., poor vision, no feeling in your hands, and anemia. Oh, to dogma!

I have to politely abstain from responding to the majority of your post as I simply haven't the care to further enable such responses.

What I will say, however, is this:

1. Who wrote this article?
2. Where did they get their information?
3. Why was Harley himself not interviewed for this article?
4. How can one believe everything that a 3rd person-written article claims? I could write an article about tiny people residing on a spec of dust right now and a lot of ignorant people would buy it.
5. Respect??? Have you read your thread? :)

I don't know.

Perhaps I've gone mad.

Maybe it's all the bananas.

After all.. I'm just a "banana pusher", right?

Hi Cassandra

I'm sorry you've got these responses to your posts.

I posted a message on this earlier, but don't think it's been noticed.

The article multibee quoted was two years old. This was around the time that Harley switched to an 811/Natural Hygiene diet.

Harley then cut out all stimulants, such as chili. These are toxic and irritate the digestive system. See Mark's post later, which mentions the effect that these can have on B12 absorption.

When he removed these from his diet, his vitamin B12 levels 'quadrupled'.

I'm sure he would have supplied this information, had anyone asked him.

This confirms my own feeling about B12, that failure to absorb may in many cases be linked to 'antinutrients' in the diet.

I suggest before people start posts accusing others of being 'egomaniacs' they could take the trouble to obtain a little more information themselves.

This is what Harley says. It sounds plausible to me, and I have heard this from others as well - what you take out of the diet can be key.

And, no, as far as I know, Harley doesn't take supplements.

Perhaps those who would like to know more about Harley's diet could ask him rather than start threads like this that only have the effect of polarising. The B12 thing is very interesting - huge area - but this isn't the way to tackle it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)

Yes it seems many clear points are being dismissed here... this is why I gave up in a sense, I simply haven't the mental energy tonight. I found myself asking... "I posted a response on here.. WHY?!".. but hey, it happens!

However, here's to keeping a positive outlook and hoping the discussion can continue on in a mature and couth manner :) If at all..!

Thank you for saying the words that I couldn't find!!! You are an angel. ♥♥

I hate when Raw Foods are referred to as a "Movement" it sounds so Diplomatic, I think of it as a lifestyle.

I concur entirely. However the phrase "raw movement" spews from every nook and cranny...

My appologies.. I was not being mean in regards to what I said about the word "Movement" being diplomatic. I was simply expressing how is only works for a small percentage of people. A movement by definition is to foster a principal or policy. That comes across as almost religious to alot of people. By definition a lifestyle is a way of life or style of living... I just find the latter, when speaking to others works much better. I mean a "Healthy Lifestyle" is a pretty attractive way to put it, everyone wants to be healthy. I also hate using the term "Raw Foods" I preferre "Living Foods" or "Whole Living Foods" for the same reason. Hope that explains my "Benign" remark a little better. ;)

I disgree. I think this discussion is very interesting and I have learned a lot. It might have started with the worst of intentions, but look at all the good info here now. b12 is a complex issue and the more we discuss it, the more we learn. It has certainly changed my POV!

For 5000 years there existed no such thing as B12. Its become such a must have and its become such a thing that vegans are lacking in it. They must involve themselves in the economic upliftment of the LOBBY industries: meat, egg, poultry, dairy etc.

I am not vegan. I am lacto-veg. High Raw.

Every person and every culture creates their own sense of balance with the eco system.

To follow a dogma and not follow your body & instincts is chaotic. But you can only follow ur instincts once they have been RESET & CLEANED. Detox.

I keep hearing about people having Lactose & Gluten related issues that got solved as soon as they were given up.
Every wonder why?

Maybe your Body type does not want it?
Maybe the processing done to Milk & Gluten in the Western world does something to it? ... I see 1 Billion Indians consume Dairy & Wheat like no tomorrow.

If someone feels super passionate about their DIET PATTERN.. it is probably because they had a CRAZY shift in their life based on that. Hence, the CRAZE for it.

Be it low fat or atkins or zero carb or south beach or vegan or raw or Paleo or Timbaktu Diet

Does it mean the exact same food is going to do the same for you? NO!..

What you have to learn from that person is FUNDAMENTALS and then treating your body like a temple.

Try things in "moderation" before u go extreme.

Beautifully put, Abhi! This has been the same message I've tried spreading in other threads, as well. Just because one person believes so passionately for their lifestyle.. does not mean it's the god's truth for everyone else. But it most certainly is for themselves.

Each and every one of us who have journeyed into this "raw movement" are GUINEA PIGS. None of the information we spew is written in stone. Our trial and errors in these lifestyles now, will aid the health and well being of those in future generations. WE are what they will look back on for the answers to their questions.

RGG, the belly-centered symptoms that most people (mistakenly) call hunger usually pass within 2-3 days. Your body is not hungry while fasting because it gets all of its needs met from its own reserves.
