Give it to me Raw

Hi SyLL,

According to Gabriel Cousens, lots of tofu and soy products are genetically modified, contain substances which act like oestrogen in the body (increasing risk of cancers in the reproductive organs) and when cooked, naturally produce MSG. Because soya goes through processing, it is denatured. As such, it can cause allergic reactions. I agree with Ryan V, it could be worse. You could be eating chips! Hope that answers your question,

love and light, Jessie

It's very simple to also make it yourself, using one of those tofu presses. If you make it yourself you tend to cut down on the processing a bit, and can at least try to get non-GMO soybeans. Most macrobiotic supply shops carry everything you need.

Awww are chips that bad? YOu could be eating a quarter pounder!

Sorry, I meant chips as in 'fries'. Am British x But yeah, anything with all that transfat/bad fat/animal fat which is apparently THE worst thing for your body. love x

I noticed a direct link between transfats and pimples about 15 years ago and cut it completely out after realizing it was not even natural. Hydrogen gas is bubbled through the oil, adding an atom which turns the shape of the lipid from a U to a Z. Now, knowing that cell walls are made of lipids, how will do you thing that is going to work out?

The FDA has ruled that ZERO amount is safe. And that's from the FDA!!

I'm proud of NYC for banning them. Go Bloomberg!!

California isn't far behind:

"Effective January 1, 2010, Californian restaurants will be prohibited from using oil, shortening, and margarine containing artificial trans fats in spreads or for frying, with the exception of deep frying donuts. Donuts and other baked goods will be prohibited from containing artificial trans fats as of January 1, 2011" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfat

I think it would be interesting to try to make it the traditional way. Organic soybeans aren't any worse than eating imported durian or 'raw" cashew based desserts and ice cream. At least soybeans can be grown locally\on this continent.

Also blue corn would be a neat thing to grow and work with. Technically the bread they made with it was raw. They would grind the grain and spread it very very thinly on a flat rock and let the sun dehydrate it. Then they would roll it into paper thin rolls to eat. It was thinner than paper and crunchy. Corn is a spiritual food to the native americans so I don't think it should be dismissed so quickly. Saving some seeds from non-gmo drought resistant corn would be a good idea if you could find any.

Also some men have way too much testosterone so soy would be good for them. It may lengthen life in men because they say women live longer because of estrogen. It lowers the risk of heart attacks. Michio Kushi wrote about how we would eliminate wars if we could get people to stop eating meat and eat more soy, adzuki beans and sea weed. I was doing macrobiotics about 20 years ago. If you dont do it exactly by the book there can be problems like he has people eat umboshi plums and isn't into people eating fruit. But he \ people who eat soy aren't some kind of villan to me- more like part of the answer to world peace and survival through vegetarianism.

Definitly don't feed the babies more soy, or soy milk....I've read that soy formula and soy milk can cause manganese poisoning in babies/ young children, and manganese poisoning causes violent behaviour. So feeding kid soy would not increase world peace...

I was asking because I had some tofu yesturday and I was feeling calm, sort of at peace and I have no negative effect so far, I think that a little tofu here and there won't hurt :)

I don't think a bit here and there hurts. I think as long as it's non-GMO, organic, and fixed without dumping it in greasy sauces or deep frying it, what's the harm? My daughter makes a mean chocolate vegan pie with it, and I'm sure not going to turn down a masterpiece made with love. :)

SyLL,
you should NOT feel guilty about that :) Especially, if it was grown organically :D But even if it wasn't...u r still lightyears ahead of the game compared to most!
