Raw food is amazing.
It's really, really good, but having said that, what's something you've added to your diet that you swear have made a huge difference in detox, emotions, health... anything?
I'm still such a novice at being raw, I'd love to know.

For me it's not about what I eat, it's about what I don't eat. I don't believe in magic foods, just get out of the way and nature will take care of you. The single best practice I've added to my life is eating less! Fasting a day a week or just eating one meal some days is, in my opinion, the best way to supercharge your health, energy, emotions, you name it!
That's a really good way to put it, and one I've actually been pondering for a while...
I just always get seduced by something or other lying around, and unfortunately, give in.
It doesn't help that my friends always have some stock of processed cookies and such around whenever I'm around them, mind you...
Spencer, how long have you been practicing "Fasting a day a week or just eating one meal some days is, in my opinion, the best way to supercharge your health, energy, emotions, you name it!" I was considering doing that.
Jay, it's been around 4-5 months now. The less you eat the more efficient your body becomes, the less you eventually need to eat, and, paradoxically, the further your food can take you in terms of nutrition. I read an article about a woman who had a B12 deficiency and even though she tried everything: supplementation, etc., it was only after a long water fast that she finally had normal levels of B12. I have a homeopathic chiropractor who kinesiologically measures deficiencies, and when I eat more I'm more deficient, when I am temperate I am completely sufficient.
Keeping things simple is so much harder of a concept than it seems- It's so easy to get caught up in 'oh, I'm so excited about all the raw gourmet foods I can make!!' state.
I've learned that I like things much better kept simple, yet I keep going for raw gourmet food in withdrawal from processed foods...
More water. Lots more water. The more water I drink and flush out my system, the better off I feel. Also, just upping my amount of juices and smoothies. I'm at my peak when my diet is as its simplest.
Good freakin' question, AJ. I definitely agree with Spencer and Charles.
Keeping things simple really works wonders — if I eat mainly sweet and non-sweet juicy fruits (I do calorie restriction and lots of fruit as advocated in 80/10/10 doesn't make me feel good at all), lots of cold, filtered water, and 3-5 green juices per week, I feel phenomenal.
A key for the beginning raw foodie that I WISH I knew when I started was this:
Avoid all the nuts, seeds, dehydrated seed/nut "gourmet" raw foods, avocados, and nut butters. Raw fats will definitely make you fat if you're not active. Keep them at the lowest percentage of your diet and you'll feel much lighter, and your digestion will be quick and efficient. Stick with fruits, juiced/blended/steamed veggies and greens, water, and good quality "superfoods" like mesquite, bee pollen, raw honey, and berries.
While I generally agree with you about the dehydrated gourmet food, it's a great way of transitioning. I wouldn't tell a beginner not to eat any of that stuff. I would not be where I am today in my diet if I didn't have my nut butters and the like.
So true Charles, we need to remember that everyone should make changes at their own pace. Transition foods are ideal to have in the kitchen in the beginning or when you want to run for something not-so-healthy. It is so much better than most of the marketed health foods currently in stores.
More water is a cheap and very effective - especially when one is still consuming heavier or dehydrated meals. I find that the more water I consume in the morning, the clearer my mind is for the day, as it helps flush out those toxins that were being eliminated while I slept.
AJ - water & green juice. Keep it clean/simple and your body will respond accordingly. If you want a supplement as an add to the detox, I use msm with lemon in my morning water (32oz) when I feel the need.
From personal experience, I can say high-fat raw does NOT work for me. As in nuts and nut butters.. I'm okay with avos.
And my juicer just arrived in my post today! yay yay !
My water intake has about halved since I've come to university.. I used to drink about 4L a day, and now I'm down to... well, actually, 2L on a good day.. that's not good.
I just keep forgetting to drink water throughout the day! it's weird.
What exactly is msm, and what does it to do you?
I've googled it several times, but I never really understood what it is exactly...
And Lemon with water is super good for you in the morning, i hear, but less effective at night? strange.
I've been eating quite horribly lately actually, as in cooked foods in my diet, and i feel crappy.
But since my juicer has arrived now... I am thinking of joining the juice feast!
Juicer <3

Yeah, never much thought at the time though as it was late at night and had been about 40 degrees here. Oh well. I am so familiar with the way the Engish and Irish talk that I just assume everyone is the same with the kiwis and Aussies.
