Give it to me Raw

What about people who bring a fruit like a pineapple to a pot luck, while some are spending hours in their kitchen fixing fanciful, gourmet offerings to their esteemed fellow raw food icons? Is it fair for the culinary artists? Is the segregation between the different types of raw foodists (fruits, greens, gourmet, superfoods, alkalarian, etc.) becoming so extreme that we are no longer able to satisfy each others needs? How may, if possible, different meetup be organized to facilitate the needs each of the different classifications?

Which group do you belong to?
Fruits:

Greens:

Gourmet:

Superfoods:

Alkaline:

If there is another personalized diet that you may be following that isn't listed above, please explain.
Any comments as to how to facilitate raw vegan meetups to meet every groups needs is appreciated. Perhaps a meetup should be organized for each groups' needs or meetups should continue to include all groups while attendees are requested to bring something to satisfy everyone.

Perhaps you didn't understand what I was writing. A member of my meetup said he paid $75 to attend a raw gourmet foods workshop so he could learn how to make fancy, ultra tasty foods. He complained to me personally that other people at the pot lucks didn't make the effort to whip up a gourmet delight. He was very offended that people would just bring fruit that wasn't even cut up. This man has not called me, invited me over to pick coconuts at his place, or attended one of my meetups since. Gourmet foods require much more preparation, attention, intention and care than just a piece of fruit. It may be easy for you to believe that you are commiting an injustice, but think how he must feel.

Kiani, I bet that person was an 811 poser. Meaning, he'd probably try to play it off like he was 811 if you asked him. But in reality, he was just too lazy to make a dish. So, he brought a pineapple.

i know??...make him go out and bring back, like, thirty more pineapples.

Give me a watermelon, a knife, and some coconut shavings. I will make a bad ass 3 layer 811 cake.

see...this sounds just crazy good. dare ya to do it at the next potluck and show up with the knife too. just walk around with it.

I have seen this at potlucks, and some organizers of certain meetups are a little more bothered by this than others. Food that is plain brought with good intentions is always my preference, much moreso than food fancily prepared simply for the sake of it.

Others are not comfortable, especially early in their raw path, in putting together fancy made dishes that may not come out tasting too good. This is understandable as well. My first raw potluck (after 4 years of eating raw food and never having been to one) consisted of a simple salad with tropical fruit and a citrus dressing. I was not prepared at all for what I indulged in that evening, inlcuding crackers, banana milk, chocolate cake, and pasta, all living. It was a world so foreign to me, even though I had enjoyed the benefits of live food for over 4 years at that point. I was completely oblivious to the gourmet side of the coin.

When I host potlucks, I encourage others who are unsure of what to make to bring plain fruit/veggies so we can create something on the spot that would entice the gourmet crowd. In fact, one person brought watermelon and I helped him cut it up so people could pick at it while sitting and socializing with others around them. I try make everyone feel inclusive, regardless of what they bring, and I even try to find something to compliment about every dish that is brought, even if it didn't quite please my taste buds. My goal, ultimately, is not to discourage others, but to instead encourage them, and I think this has had a positive effect on the community at large.

Not sure if this answers your concern, but I hope it offers something :-)

What about fruit skewers, that sounds yumm. On a shallow plate with a bit of pineapple juice to keep them fresh. You could get really creative with this too.. many different combos. It would look like a rainbow! Maybe have a few types of fruit dipping sauce on the side? ;)

Yes, that would be me. hahaha. I eat mostly fruit, but I would not consider myself a fruitarian, by any stretch. And, I guess that a fruitarian who would show up would not be eating anything gourmet anyway, so yeah ... preparing their food to resemble "other" dishes may not be the best idea :-)

My goal at the potlucks is to display to people that tasty dishes need not be fancy, by any stretch. I eat basically a whole foods/mono diet, except when I go out to eat, as I enjoy tastily prepared meals like any other. But my preferences any other time of the day are the whole foods without the fancy prep :-)

I don't belong to a group, but I could see myself bringing a couple watermelon to a potluck. I would bring whatever it is I felt like eating.

Another conventional wisdom: Lots of protein will only make you pee proteins ;) Expensive for you and puts a strain on your kidneys.
