Give it to me Raw

Hi, Folks,
I started eating raw foods last summer and ate a lot of nuts, made a lot of green smoothies with raw kale, cucumber, and a little fruit (not a lot), and I ate a lot of raw chocolate. In the fall I got numular eczema on the front of my lower leg (shin). I have never before had anything like this but think -- unlike my dermatologist -- that it's related to my dietary shift. Either the greens pushed too much of a detox on my body and it got overloaded and started to use my skin to cleanse, or I was allergic to the raw chocolate, or even the kale, which I had a lot of. I am no longer suspecting the nuts because I have eaten them since and the eczema has not worsened. I still have the eczema spot, it's a bit better. Any of you had such a reaction when you converted to raw? Thank you. Greg

same for me - I don't quite feel up to trying a colonic

Hi Greg and Kat,

If you are not going to do colonics you need to keep a fair amount of high quality unprocessed cooked foods in your diet. Steamed and baked vegetables and high quality grains like quinoa etc are all good. Your skin is rashy because your colon isn't coping so you need to not push it further.

I wouldn't even go near fasting without enemas or colonics.

Hope that helps.

Casey,
It's good for all of us that smart people like you are on the site. I wanted to fast but read a few days ago in Susan Cabot's book that if you don't do enemas or colonics when you fast, you risk having a lot of toxins sitting in your body during the fast. I would not have know this unless I looked at her book, but you are putting it out there for others to see. Good health for most of us toxin-laden Americans is not as simple as drinking a few cups of wheatgrass and skipping Cambell's soups. And cleansing is complicated because you can do too much too soon or do it in such a way that the toxins do not get flushed but reabsorbed. Thanks for your insight. I think it's best to get help when you fast from a good guide -- a naturopath, or a great book/author that you trust. Greg

Suvine, But it just so happens that I look exactly like this dish. It's one of those funny coincidences in life. Nobody knew what to make of me (no pun intended) until the raw foods movement came along. Then, finally, I got a little understanding and appreciation.

PLA: Thank you so much for this information. Again, the dermatologist was clueless about all this and did indeed take a biopsy of my eczema spot, saying all of it has nothing to do with food. Let's both cleanse on!

PLA: I read your blog. You might want to include a photo of the skin irritation. I took photos of mine and sent it to an eczema expert (Donia, mentioned in previous postings) and to my brother, an MD who forwarded it the photo to a dermatologist at Mayo. No doubt lots of others are experiencing outbreaks while changing diet.

Hey PLA that's amazing, I get granuloma anulare on my elbow too! I first got it many years ago and was told it's often found in diabetics, but otherwise the cause was unknown. It wentt away when I went on a no-grain diet, but i couldn't continue with that diet due to other symptoms, so it came back. Were you told it's a sign of detoxing?

Yes, this is very sound advice and thank you very much. I fully agree that going to a dermatologist will make you a "serial dermatologist goer," and this, of course means you never really heal or get a cure but wait for symptoms to reappear so you can return. That's the system. Thanks

I used to go to a dermatologist on a regular basis as a teenager because I had severe acne and all she gave me was drugs and more drugs – no advice on how to improve my diet, my routine, etc. Now I have to detox from years of taking seriously strong acne meds (10+ years), on top of all the antibiotics I was fed as a child... :(
On the other hand, I still believe it is important to have anything suspicious-looking checked, just in case...

Well you'd heard right – lots of tetracylcine and roaccutane/accutane (which is even worse)...
At least, I managed to convince my younger sister not to make the same mistakes... :)
Even though skin complaints aren't very pleasant, it's always a relief to find out it isn't cancer. :)

I believe that the body can heal itself if given the support. I'm a nurse in a nursing home and I've seen the body cling to life no matter how much poison is thrown at it.

Sounds ridiculous to me. Anyone actually older and experiencing longevity there? I doubt it. I live out in the country in the general direction of God's fart zone and perhaps that's better than getting caught up in this sort of materialistic stuff...

they gossip about which teams are going to trade or sign star players. Most of it is bullshit. They just create rumors to sell papers / get hits. Still I eat it up.

Hi agree with Erin, everything she suggested is very similiar to wha ti have found. I am also seeing an accupuncturist and realize that we actually need cooked foods in our diet to support the spleen. Healing with whole foods is a great start..
