Give it to me Raw

Hi, Folks,
I started eating raw foods last summer and ate a lot of nuts, made a lot of green smoothies with raw kale, cucumber, and a little fruit (not a lot), and I ate a lot of raw chocolate. In the fall I got numular eczema on the front of my lower leg (shin). I have never before had anything like this but think -- unlike my dermatologist -- that it's related to my dietary shift. Either the greens pushed too much of a detox on my body and it got overloaded and started to use my skin to cleanse, or I was allergic to the raw chocolate, or even the kale, which I had a lot of. I am no longer suspecting the nuts because I have eaten them since and the eczema has not worsened. I still have the eczema spot, it's a bit better. Any of you had such a reaction when you converted to raw? Thank you. Greg

If it were me, I'd try fresh aloe vera and wheatgrass pulps on the exteral effected area along with adding wheatgrass juice to your diet and stop eating cacao.

I doubt its the kale.

Peace

Thanks, Jason, for the tip. I also doubt it's the kale but when I returned to the kale drinks, it got a bit worse. No more cacao for me. Paul Nilsson, a raw foods author, thinks chocolate is not a health food at all. Aloe vera is supposed to be good for the skin so I will consider this. Greg

Green smoothies have given me similar problems, although I think my issues were due to a high sugar high potassium diet that removed too much sodium from my body and simultaneously made me vulnerable to fungal infection.

Still not totally sure, but I switched back to my old ways of eating with just maybe 50% raw with plenty of salt, and my problems with dry skin and itchiness went away. These days, I'll eat a raw salad with raw root veggies, plenty of cooked starch, a fair amount of raw meats (mostly fish) and a solid amount of raw eggs.

I'm not entirely sure I'm in better shape than before I started raw, but I feel good and energetic in general, and appearance wise - well, nothing can help my face when I'm just plain ugly ...
but It's not really an issue. I love my face. LOL

Oh, I think Green Smoothies with kale were a primary factor in many of my issues, and I remember someone by the name of Meadow, who I think reported similar difficulties. Not sure if this is true for you, as it seems quite a few on here do really well with kale- based green smoothies.

I guess my only useful contribution is this: higher salt plus a bit more cooked food plus getting off the high-fruit 811 crap removed my strange raw food symptoms.

FractaLove

thank you. I think the subject of optimal health is full of mystery. I have seen a dermatologist, a naturopathic doctor, have communicated with an expert on eczema (she cured herself with healthy foods, primarily, meaning no medicine, no herbs or pills of any kind) and they all say different things about eczema. thanks

811 helps my skin. Seems like a lot of people like to bash it (calling it 'crap') because they didn't get it to work for themselves. 811 works for a lot of people, done properly, and it's a great way to eat if you are interested in staying 100% raw.

I had the same damn problem, and I am still recovering. I got eczema all over my legs and back, and I had never had it before in my life - although I have a family history of it. It all started when I converted my diet to organic, then raw... I thought maybe raw was giving me too much of a detox reaction, so I tried going back to some cooked, processed foods and it only got worse. It seemed to me that I was already detoxing and couldn't really go back. I am slowly improving. I did a juice fast for a week, and that gave me a little improvement but it didn't seem to last. Whatever toxins were causing me such trouble, they seemed to be difficult for my body to eliminate once the raw food had stirred them up from their hiding places. I am now using detox patches that contain bamboo vinegar. I put them on my feet every night, and every morning a see a bunch of dark grey gunk that has been sucked out of my body.

Kat,

I think that once your body has this kind of reaction, it does not go away overnight. One must be patient. If you google the words "eczema" and "Donia" together, you'll get the website of a real expert. She has helped me a lot. Thanks for the reply.

So far, I have had it for about 3 months... but warm weather will be coming very quickly to southern Cali, and I need to get this fixed soon! I need to be able to wear normal clothing and not long pants when it is hot outside. :-/

I am looking at the website. I will forward it to my parents - they both constantly suffer from eczema. Thank you!

Kat,
Donia is a great source of info. I called her and spoke with her. Her health focus is based on a book by Henry Bieler, MD, and it's called Food is your Best Medicine. I read it, along with lots of other books on health and this is a great book. Basically he believes that food heals the body, the right food, that is. As an MD he never prescribed pills, but always certain kinds of foods. The ideal of Hippocrates: "Let food be your medicine, medicine your food." Sounds like eczema runs in your family, so I would get on Donia's mailing list. She sends a lot of great information. Best of luck to you, Kat.

Great tip, than you so much, Greg!
I've been getting some tiny dry patches on my arms, legs and stomach, which I suspect may be eczema (my skin definitely takes over when my digestive system fails to get rid of toxins)... And I suffer from acne (face, back, chest, scalp – unless it is another type of skin eruption, etc.).
I will try and follow the recommendations as well as get my other elimination systems 'in working order'. :)

All almonds sold in California are treated with a gaz or a chemical, in both cases the almond does not sprout, it is hence dead.

Amen, Loren. So do you feel the same way about blending then? The whole fiber is still there with blending so not improving on nature as much as sort of 'pre-chewing', if you will
