Give it to me Raw

Ok, so this is something that I have been curious about lately. To eat raw food is to eat food in its natural state. Non-cooked, the way nature made, right? Then why do we still use food processors/blenders juicers, dehydrators etc? Shouldn't we eat raw food like we didn't have electricity? What if all of a sudden something major happened and we didnt have our electricity, or our gasoline so we wouldn't be able to get all the foods from other nations here to us. Would striving to eat foods that are native to your area be the best thing? Its something that a friend and I were talking about the other day. What would be do without all of our appliances. Would most of us be happy still eating a raw food diet, or would be building a fire and cooking? We eat superfoods that are not even from where we live, as well as other fruits and veggie that we would never known existed. I had someone tell me recently that we need to eat the foods that grow here, in the united states and around your area, because that is where we are. Our bodies do not need the food from the tropics or some other country, because we are not there and we do not need the nutrients that that food privides to us. What are you thoughts on some of this? I don't really have a lot of thoughts on it, but I do feel that eating foods closer to home would be very beneficial. (I really need to learn what to and not to eat in the wild. lol)

If you really put yourself out in nature and look around- there is almost nothing we can eat. It is a humbling experience. Yes maybe you can find some plants that are edible but they will be very strong tasting and probably hard to chew. You will realize how far we have strayed from a natural existence. Even acorns are chalky tasting.

It kind of makes me believe in the possibility that aliens landed on earth because it seems so impossible that we lived off of the land.

Sure we have adapted tools and farming techniques but if there was a world disaster and we were left with only what we have on our backs and our wits most of us would die. I think the vanished civilizations have proven this as well. Yes we can survive in optimal conditions but very few would in a natural state like a "naked" animal does.

I think it is truly amazing how we have survived and advanced the way we have. But it is also scary and probably tragic how far from ourselves and nature we have fallen as a species.

It is a little scary, how far from ourselves and nature we have fallen.

Reading this, I was reminded of my plans for living off-grid someday, in a warmer climate. The world may indeed stop producing electricity, falling into a state of total chaos, but my trusty ever-lasting Vitamix will surely last for centuries running on the sun's juice. If I'm among the last few humans alive, at least I'll be relaxing with a smoothie somewhere in sunny California.

Anyway, we may not be in the tropics now, but it does look like humans evolved from there. So, maybe we shouldn't be living in these cold shadowy climates. For example, it's a scientific fact that Vitamin D does not exist in my current hometown, Pittsburgh. (Kidding, of course. But it IS cold, dreary, and generally unpleasant.)

BTW, I'm also very interested in learning a lot more about wildcrafting various edibles. The Boutenko family (http://www.rawfamily.com/) has a lot of great stuff to say about that. Look up some of their description of their hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.

How would you get your Vita mix to run off the sun?

Solar power! I'm seriously interested in building a solar array once we move to CA next year!

There's reasons why our ancestors didn't live as long... nutrition was a major reason.

If we have technology to enhance our nutrition and prolong our longevity, why not? Just keep it under 115 degrees lolz

But what if we didn't have the technology. Do you think our lifespan would demish?

Good points.

The book The Hundred Year Lie (great book) makes the case that our longer lifespans have increased thanks to indoor heating, plumbing, and refrigeration. It's not so much because of nutrition.

I suppose that would probably explain why so many who eat so poorly live so long anyway!

Maybe nutrition isn't the main reason, but I think it's definitely been important.

I would love to learn to live like that.. simplicity has a nice ring to it. I dont' have a yard at the moment, so I cannot garden. :( Maybe someday.

We just take avantage of technology. I am not prepering many raw dishes as i do not have much time or talent - i prefer fresh fruits but i was cooked for so long so i miss cooked, complex food.
Despite trends in Raw food in my regular days and weeks i do not go to the raw restaurants or make complicated receipes - i keep it simple. Without the blender i will not be able to chew as much greens as i use now in my smootheis.
Yes - i agree - i also prefer natural state of food, but blender helps me introduce more variety in taste, texture and amount and speed up the process of prepering more complex meal. I absolutely disregard dehydrated food - except fruits.
