Give it to me Raw

I have had almost everything on Daily Juice's menu. Not all of their drinks are raw but I wanted to try everything at least once, they are still pretty healthy and vegan. I have had all of the food and smoothies, only ten more juices and I will have had it all. Well, besides 12 types of shots they offer.

The other day I watched this video online that showed another cafe in town that has a raw food selection. I can't remember where I found the link or even the place. It is something cafe bella, but NOT the de bella cafe, it has some other long weird word. Anyway I now know where it is. And check this, the day after I saw that video my boyfriend was talking to the guy who lives across the street from us and he is a raw chef there! I've lived across the street for like 6 months now, so anyways I was going there today to try it out and along the way I see this sign- Beet's living food cafe. So I go there instead and it's another living cafe in town that just opend like a week ago! So I ate there instead and it was good, real nice place. I got a peice of pie for desert and oh my god.

OK...

So to the best of my knowledge we have *four* raw food restaurants in Austin:

1) Daily Juice Cafe (you clearly already know this one :) ).
2) The Raw Foods bar at the Lamar Whole Foods
3) Borboletta on 6th
4) Beets Cafe on 5th (just opened this week!)

I dearly love all of these for different reasons.

I love love love the Daily Juice Cafe, not just for the Walnut Chorizo, or the Fudge Bites, but because they have some *astounding* specials that go by that aren't part of the normal menu.

The Raw Foods bar at Whole Foods on Lamar is open till 10pm (later than all the other options) and makes amazing raw cupcakes.

The Pear Tarts at Borbolleta are to die for. OMG Yummy. The Raw Lasagna is also incredible.

I've just started munching through Beets... but they have raw vegan Ice Cream! :)

We have an embarrassment of riches on the raw food restaurant front here in Austin :)

Additionally, Ritamarie runs a really good monthly potluck. Highly recommended :)

I've been to all but Beets. I'm so excited! Thanks ;]

Beets is exciting :)

So far of the things I've tried my favorite is the ELT (Eggplant Lettuce & Tomato) :) (Except for the Ice Cream... my favorite there is the lemon sorbet with raspberry sauce :) ).

One thing to watch out for though... the signs are a little obscured by the trees, so it's easy to drive by. It's on the left side of 5th street (presuming you are going the right way! :) ), just past Campbell just past the Subway et al (which are more visible) :)

Where is Beets? must be pretty new! Casa De Luz is a good place, they usually have a handful of raw options, though they are mostly macrobiotic. Check out their Sunday brunch.

Beets is on 5th, just past Campbell. Basically, if you are coming from MoPac it will be on your left pretty quickly, and if you get to Lamar you've gone to far.

Oh I didnt' know about the raw bar at whole foods, cool.

Where are your favorite places to grocery shop?
I've only lived here a little over a year but I like
Whole foods of course
Sunharvest
Wheatsville and
Central market

A place called Sprouts is opening up. I've never been to one but I think it is along the same lines.

Wheatsville and Central Market, definitely. I'll go to Whole Foods, and try not to spend a Whole Lot of money. I think the Austin Whole Foods is the only one I'd go to, as well, since it originated there; but I've tried boycotting them other places. It seems to me that most of their produce isn't organic, yet still priced as such; that organic is implied, but not necessarily true. Sometimes I just can't help but load up at the Salad Bar, though, and end up paying about 20 bucks for a box of veggies. DANG! I'm from Austin, but live in Wisconsin during the summer...and can tell you how lucky Austin is to have so many raw places to eat. I don't eat out ANYWHERE here.. had to open up my own place to show people how real food and drinks should look/taste!

Nothing like a $14 Daily Juice smoothie! Yowie!!

My cheap date place is Casa de Luz. $5 gets you two trips to the organic proletarian salad bar with the sloppy dressing on the lettuce, yes!! I was macro for many years (with coffee, heh-heh!)

This is fantastic. I was in Austin in August of 2007, and Daily Juice was the only option I had (besides the fantastic cafe in Whole Foods). Austin has such a strong presence with raw and vegan communities, that the explosion that this place is seeing is wonderful to see.

I even hung out with the socialite vegetarian crowd that evening, and they were so friendly and warm, and we basically explored Austin the entire evening. Many of them were extremely open to the raw concept, even though they were unaware of its basic tenets before I met them.

Austin may be my next city to move to :-)
