Give it to me Raw

Ok, so it might sound like the most ridiculous question....butttt.....

Is popcorn raw? It starts off as a seed, then put in the microwave for only a minute on a low temperature and its done.......?

I've just started a 12 week raw challenge with a friend - and to transition into it, we are only having one cooked meal a day, that being dinner - although my first two days I did 100% raw, but today I had some popcorn and was wandering whether that was raw or not?

Hmmmmmmmmm?

No, it's not raw. You don't want to eat that anything that comes from a microwave. Toss the machine out. Also, the inside shiny lining of microwavable popcorn bags are highly toxic when heated.

I'm not gonna tell you to stay away from popcorn. Popcorn remained the last cooked snackfood I had and got me through some terrible cravings for junk. And, as cooked food snacks go, it's not the worst thing in the world. But don't get it from a microwave.

Thanks Charles - yea thats what it was, the best choice there was on a serious battle with resisting what was being offered to me at work......big plate of cake and biscuits and warm food on a freezing day today......everyone else was eating it while i drank my water and ate my mandarin.....then i saw some popcorn, not the microwave one actually, the one ready made in the bag, and I had that, and it settled my cravings or urges straight away.....sounds ridiculous aye, the power of food, gah. But yea the popcorn did save me from giving in, and eating those other worse foods.

So i think it'll be my backup food also...... I'm not allowed to take scroggin to work, because i work in a kindergarten and here in New Zealand because of the huge allergies to nuts, we arn't allowed nuts anywhere near the centre, not even peanut butter. SO dried apple and popcorn I think will be my saving glory, until I get more used to things. :)

Thanks heaps charles :)

There is also a version of a raw popcorn where you break up a cauliflower, shove it in a bag with a bit of nutritional/savoury yeast (not strictly raw, but better than most options), and some cayenne pepper or salt or whatever to taste, shake and either eat from bad or put it in a dehydrator, but reportedly very little generally lasts through the dehydrating due to someone visiting the dehydrator too often. That would be easy to take to work, no nuts (I think savoury yeast is OK for nut concerns) If you do plan to let it dehydrate fully, you put less seasoning on it, otherwise it comes out too well seasoned. There are lots of variations of this, and quite a few youtube video versions of it where everyone goes 'wow!!!!!' I've not tried it, but always thought it looked interesting.

I've actually tried it. I wasn't impressed. But, then again, I've never been a cauliflower fan.

I agree with Charles' post above.

Any food that's microwaved is no longer raw/living/vital; it's been cooked/damaged/devitalised.

But, if you need a quick & easy transition food, a small to moderate amount of microwaved (or saucepan made - which is better than microwaved) popcorn is better than eating say a "meat" pie that's microwaved.

There are many other healthy things that you can eat that are raw/living/vital and vegan and convenient. It may take a bit of practice to form a new (good) habit to buy/make/eat such food though. Soaked/sprouting almonds, for example (should be less allergenic than dormant almonds or peanuts, I think). Fresh fruit. Dried fruit (eat in moderation). Home-made hummus (can be made from a variety of raw/living foods). Essene bread (made from sprouted grains). Sprouts (lentils, mungbeans, wheat, barley, alfalfa). Carrot, cucumber. A salad consisting of all of the above and leafy greens. :)

Be well, Reetz :)

yea Essene breads, they are raw arn't they? I checked with my organic shop and they THINK it is...i also emailed essense breads but never heard back.....I like the lil essene buns with the sultanas in them....otherwise the big loaf one, with abit of organic jam on it, yummmm. I dont have a car at the moment, so havn't been able to get to my organic shop.....so havn't been able to get my raw bars either, hence why the temptation for other foods are coming in i think.

Consider/try making Essene bread yourself! I've read that it can be "baked" on a rock under the sun. :)

Dear Miss New Zealand,

I agree, avoid using a microwave.

If you must choose popcorn, use an air popper. No oil, no microwave, no fire. Just hot air.

Some people find that dehydrating peas at low heat gives the crunch and lightness they desire from eating crunchy snacks. From frozen peas, not canned (canned peas: bluck!). A friend does this tossing frozen peas around in a bowl with a little lemon juice mixed with a little sea salt and a very little bit of red pepper, and then dehydrating them.

I've had dehydrated apple skins (made by someone else). Crunchy, low fat, sweet. Probably depends on the type of apple you use.

I have a friend who is always experimenting with her dehydrator. Every week it is something new. I feel like a test subject when I go over there. And she watches your face when you try one of her inventions, looking for your reaction. Kind of intimidating in a funny way.

Miss New Zealand? ha, I like it. :)

Yea, I'm learning as i go, so these things your teaching me are good.

microwaves? = bad news. got it. :)
I'm only having one cooked meal a day for my first 2 weeks, of the 12 week raw challenge, then reassess after that, so its going good so far....the raw meals ive had on my first 3days have just been some tuna mixed with some chilli con carne in the.......*eek* microwave for 50seconds.....might need to find an alternative.... but thanks for the heads up :)

yea yummmmmmm, ive just bought some dried apple from the supermarket, accidentally left it in the fridge cos i forgot about it amongst all the fresh fruit, so its all brown and crusty now............... never tried apple skins though.....will have to do some experimenting like your friend (when i finally get a dehydrator).....not sure i'll find a guinea pig though....maybe if you move to NZ, I can borrow you as my guinea pig for abit....i dont really wanna be responsible for making you gag or choke though,.....which could be inevitable since im only starting off, so maybe not such a good idea. :)

you should do a video a week, of what you eat. Lay what your going to eat each meal out on the floor, and film it each day.
A video Freelea did was awesome, when she did that, laid everything out for breakfast lunch and dinner for the one day, helped heaps, just to see what and how much mono eaters have - doooooooo it durian :) :) :) be good :) and helpful to newbeez like me. :)
