What a bizarre way to get up in the morning....to news that Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize and that NASA has dropped a bomb on the moon to "search for water".
What the hell?
Nothing against the president, but he hasn't had much time to accomplish anything yet. Why give him an award for something he HASN'T done? Apparently, though, I'm not the only one perplexed by their decision....
While it's true that this administration hasn't yet accomplished much in America, I don't agree that Obama has accomplished nothing, or not enough to warrant the award. The issues that need to be tackled here, Guantanimo, the economy, healthcare, education, Iraq and Afganistan; they cannot be done without the support of Congress. Even with the majority, there is still not enough support, mainly due, in my opinion, to lobbiest control.
To the rest of the world, however, Obama has done an amazing job over one year. It doesn't get much coverage in the American press, but if you pay attention, you'll see what they've been up to. Simply the fact that he has improved American reputation abroad is enormous. If you've travelled at all in the past decade, you'll have seen the reactions from many Europeans towards Americans. That has, for the most part, changed.
To a powerful western country like America - if you don't have friends you'll attract war. If you don't participate in the UN, you'll attract war. If you don't have the support of the EU, you will attract war. That's why he was given the award, and he most certainly deserves it.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
You make some excellent points, Kelley.
But, with respect to your opinion, America is not the world. That people in other countries - formerly hostile towards the US or not - like him better than Bush is not enough, in my view, to warrant such an honor. Past recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize have accomplished tangible improvements or, in worst case scenarios, at least wide-spread education that begins to turn world opinion. Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, the Red Cross, the IPC, Jane Addams, Albert Schweitzer, Martin Luther King, UNICEF, Amnesty International, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Kofi Annan, Al Gore....these folks struggled for years and actually accomplished things. Barack Obama is just getting started.
That people may like the US better (or hate it less) has little to do with achieving peace on a global scale. Especially when we still have troops in over 100 countries around the world and engaged in operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and more; when we write law that favors corporate models making them recipients of protectionism so strong that they legally wreak havoc in countless ways around the world (including our back yards); when we still fight drugs at home and abroad with guns and strong-arm tactics; when we steadfastly refuse to hold laws to one simply barometer (does it limit freedom or expand it?) and so commit violence of every sort (physical, economic, etc.) in every corner of our sphere of influence; and much more still.
I hold out hope that Obama will be a great president, but he doesn't need the co-operation of congress to close Gitmo or bring troops home. He doesn't even need anyone else to simply stop the raids at home on medicinal marijuana facilities, yet the raids continue.
very nice post david. Peace price for someone who still supports 2 wars abroad, and many more in our city streets, while sugarcoating bankers and financiers with our money. Obama-peacemaker-joke
Obama is better than Bush because Bush was insane. But like all politicians Obama has no moral integrity and sustains himself upon hypocrasy. If he had moral integrity, he would not participate in the state and its mass violence and stealing.
Under Obama there has apparantly been; an increase in the troops in Afghanistan once and talks about a second increase, double the number of Predator strikes in Pakistan compared to 2008, tons of munitions to the Somali "government" that only controls a tiny portion of its own country, at least two strikes on Somali targets, threats of sanctions against Iran. Great contributions to world peace then!
The USA is still in Japan isn't it, it has hundreds of overseas military bases? Crazy, blatant imperialism.
ALIENS!!!! They are trying to kill the aliens up there, the moon is flooded with them. I know noone believes me but I have done research.
Why do you THINK we have not gone back since??? Has anyone seen the smuggled footage of neal armstrong andf the ruins on there, it looked like an abandoned house and they were telling him to turn back and he refused he was so impressed.
Not because of the aliens but because they could throw the whole orbit of the earth off and create tsunamis everywhere.. we HAVE lost our minds as a race!!
Transparency in a government! WE NEED. SMALL government BIG MINDS and free buisness! What the giovernment is doing keeping secrets is really really dictator like.
Under his watch mercenaries now make up a larger percentage of troops in Afghanistan than USAF personnel, and are not subject to the Geneva Conventions. And that extra $636 billion the US Senate just approved this week will help the President’s defense department in its war against this planet. Oh, and let's not forget about all those displaced Pakistanis or his threats to Venezuela and Bolivia or his continued support of the Cuba embargo.
Sounds like a man of peace to me, just like that other Nobel Prize winner Henry Kissinger.
I disagree with your definition of spirituality. I personally define spirituality as simple awareness, both of yourself in your actions and to your surroundings, as well the connection you may feel to all living things. No belief in something happ...
YES YES YES! Thank you so much for this. I have been procrastinating BIG TIME. You have served as the motivation I needed to clear this crazy clutter I live in once and for all! You're wonderful =]
That's hilareous. My husband looks at the sun to make himself sneeze. There's some weird phenomena that 10% of the population has that looking at the sun makes them sneeze.
