Give it to me Raw

I wanted to write a small simple... well, nothing is simple anymore, paragraph on being new to the lifestyle (Raw, 8/11, etc.) I've received several emails from people that are downright scared to eat, or partake in this "lifestyle" due to the scrutiny in 99% of the threads here on GITMR (raw vs. 8/11 vs. fruitarian vs. vega vs. pesciterian, etc. etc. etc.)

These boards can get a little scary sometimes, no doubt, so If you are new to this lifestyle fear not.

Eating right is not as hard or complex as it's made out to be. If you stick to fruits, nuts, seeds and veggies, and balance them out in moderation you'll be just fine and well on your way to better health, I assure you. Weighing your portions, comparing carbs vs. fats, etc. is not necessary, unless you choose to do this on your own and it's a goal you've set for yourself for reasons unknown to me. Eating does not need to be this complicated, nor is it by any means. If you’ve weaned yourself of the S.A.D diet the award is already in your hand and my hat goes off to you.

I’ve been eating RAW for over 7+ years now, in the beginning I was clueless. I stuck to fruits, nuts, seeds and veggies and did my best to properly food combine when eating.. that was it. After roughly 7 months I began to experience a whole new relationship with my body. I no longer “planned” eating. My body knew what it wanted, what it needed and when it needed it, I just followed along and gave it what it asked for. To this day I eat this way, it works for me. Eating to me is nothing more than a fuel to sustain life while I do my best to enjoy it. The byproduct of better health, for me, is living a life disease free which in turn allows me to see and experience much more than I would lugging around a walker and a catheter.

So before you get scared away and run for the closest Burger King, know that eating right is not complex. You don’t need to read a book, or follow some minute by minute technique to achieve positive results. With proper health you will have the energy, stamina and drive to live life to its fullest.

I am new to this too. And am extremely overwhelmed right now. Feels like a huge task right now and I know it shouldn't be like this. I want to be healthy and peaceful but not be burdened with it. My question is, for a former non-veg, what is the correct 'path'? Vegeterain>Vegan>Raw or should I go cold turkey?

It is huge, but it doesn't have to be a task. You should/probably do what works for you, experiment......we're different from each other. Keep learning, don't worry. It's fun. Food is enjoyable!!

start with small changes in your diet, try to change one meal at a time, e.g. just fruit for breakfast. Then try to eliminate salt and oil from your salads, e.g. and see how you go. Your body will tell you if you are doing it right and if it still wants something else. Hope it helps!

So much info to take in. Thanks for taking the scariness out and encouraging everyone to go at their pace. It makes me feel safe here, even if I feel I have stuffed up!

This is not walking the tightrope here. How old are you, wild guess,.....uh, 20? 21? Life-threatening illness? Guessing......ah-no!

Hi, I'm new to raw and i've practically been living off of just whole fruits and veggies. I want some variety though but all the recipes require all these things i've never even heard of before and are really complex, for me atleast. Do you have any advice on where to start? Thanks.

Well I've only been into this since August quickly realized the whole label thing (% raw, vegan, vegetarian, etc.) was not serving any useful purpose other than creating anxiety. Really what a person eats is no one else's business. Realizing this was very freeing. I also realized that because I'm not '100% raw' I don't have to worry about every single ingredient passing muster. This is also a lot less stressful.

I've found that if I keep the kitchen stocked with a certain set of ingredients, there are a ton of raw recipes I can make. Anything super fancy or requiring tons of ingredients isn't worth the stress. Just simple stuff like some yummy sauces, seed crackers, kale chips and such.

Matt Monarch and Angela Stokes Monarch were in Columbus last week and I was pleasantly surprised to hear Matt recommend a transitional diet that could be maintained long term over trying to go 100% raw right off and doing the yo yo thing. Which kind of made me think twice about 'cheating' on occasional junk food - he said once you detox that stuff is way harder on the body.

this makes a ton of sense to me, as I'm just transitioning and planning a 30 day raw feast (today is day 1) and I feel much more apt to eat the way that I'm feeling than planning something really structured. Like, in the morning i want to eat a lot of fruit, and I noticed around 2 pm i think "thats enough" and I start eating more nuts and vegetables. Makes sense, but how often we refuse to listen to our bodies... and end up in all kinds of distress as a result!
