Give it to me Raw

I keep my fat intake under 10% and everytime I eat a mono meal of fruit my stomach burns like fire. I also noticed a frustration and bad temper since I have been eating this way. Does anyone have any experience and guidance with these issues?

First make sure you workout or somehow create a need, otherwise there's no demand for fuel. Second, eat only relatively low glycemic fruits until your body really calls for sweet fruit; focus on things like grapefruits, tomatoes, cucumbers, and of course greens, celery, etc. Make sure you've taken care of mineralization before throwing down the sweet stuff.

If you've burned up your glycogen reserves through exercise or calorie restriction, when you eat sweet fruit it should digest well. The only time I don't digest it well is when I don't have a true need to eat it.

You've also got to be REALLY present when eating a high fruit diet. Just try to slow down life, breathe slowly, make sure you're experiencing every moment deeply, observe every thought even more consciously. It's not difficult to lose one's presence when you eat a high fruit diet, and if you don't keep control of yourself you could let an impulse take you away. However, I've found it's actually enhanced my presence when I can manage to stay harnessed and in control of my mind. Emphasize the grapefruits/cucumbers/tomatoes, eat slowly and mindfully, and you should be able to be peaceful on 80/10/10.

"It's not difficult to lose one's presence when you eat a high fruit diet"

I don't see how that relates to fruit. Seems like an emotional issue. I haven't experienced myself being any more or less grounded because of my change in diet. It's all about my mind and spirit.

Also, I wouldn't say to wait on the sweet fruits if they appeal to you. Undereating is a really good way for 80/10/10 to 'not work.'

Actually I would say be careful with all citrus and other acidic fruits like pineapple if you are having stomach pain.

Stick with soft sweet fruits like papaya, mango and banana.

Eat slower and chew really well. Enjoy your fruit ; ) If I eat a melon too fast, my stomach burns too. Eat it slowly and there's no problems.

Not sure about your frustrating emotions. Could just be that your not numbing yourself out with food anymore and these are old feelings just now starting to surface.

I'm not surprised you have frustration and bad temper if every time you eat fruit alone (of any kind?) your stomach 'burns like fire' - how strange! Even banana?

I would recommend you embark on a fast to heal. Contact a fasting practitioner in your area.

J, 'acid belly' is simply due to having too much variety in our stomach and foods are mixing.

a simple way to prove this is do a mono week on your fav fruits.

come hang with us in malaysia. its 2009 penang durian festival today. peeps can see how peaceful we really are in the raw.. :)

we dont do workouts before each meal. we just live active lifestyles.

You might have a candida issue in your guts....many people do and it can cause a wide range of symptoms. Do a keyword search.

I had that problem, too, and got some good advice on this site: http://www.giveittomeraw.com/forum/topics/too-much-fruitwack-job

I gave up on 80/10/10 after about 6 months, though. I'd gained 10 pounds, looked visibly older, and felt like a raging (rhymes with) witch.

Good luck! Do what's right for you!

if one gains 10lbs and didnt need too, clearly they werent making 811 work for them. :)

low fat 100% raw vegan disolves the numbing and lets all those pent up emotions flow outward. if we dont transmutate that extra energy into living our life purpose, we will always reach back for the numbing lifestyle.

Peanut, I'm wondering if you took on the board the 'eating huge amounts of fruit' (as some 811-ers certainly do), without it being matched by a high level of physical activity.

I've been on a high-fruit diet happily for a year now, and have not put on weight. My level of exercise is quite gentle, eg a couple of non-aerobic classes a week (dancing, stretch etc), and, consequently, although I eat lots of fruit compared with the average person, I only eat as much as I like, and in quantity that's far less than many on a high-fruit diet. (Anne Osborne - well-known fruitarian - eats surprisingly little and has thrived for 17 years on fruit - she's also very slim.)

I did at one stage try 'copying' the menus in the 811 book, but the quantities were far too much for me! I'm pretty sure that if I'd attempted to force myself to eat that quantity day in day out I'd have gained (unwanted) weight!

Eating more than you need is hard on the system, and could well be ageing.

Having said that, 30 bananas, 60 bananas, 10 mangoes, whatever, is absolutely right for those who need lots of fuel for their lifestyles.

As I notice your link is on the 'too much fruit' theme, here is a link to an article I wrote on similar - although the emphasis is on instinctive eating, rather than fuel requirements, I hope you will find it of interest:

Thanks Debbie! I run 5 miles per day and bike to work, so maybe that's it. But, honestly, I just don't do well with high-sugar diets -- I feel really grouchy and desperate and worn down. I remember this feeling from before I was raw, when I ate low-fat cookies and such. Maybe because there's Diabetes II in my family?

I'm still raw/vegan, but I emphasize non-sweet fruits (cukes, bell peppers, avos), greens, citrus, nuts, sprouts. I wouldn't call this a "numbing lifestyle," but whatever. I just wanted to share my experience in case it resonates with someone.

Hi El-bo, You're absolutely right; sodium is not the problem, but sodium chloride, and inorganic mineral salt which always causes water retention and raises blood pressure. We don't need any of that.
