Square Foot Gardening! I went from a total non-gardener to growing greens all winter using the Square Foot Gardening techinque. Go to Amazon or your library and pick up Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. It's a great method for beginner and since it's all raised bed gardening, you don't need a shovel or a hoe!
Neem oil with a little Br. Bronner's soap and water in a spray bottle at dusk. Water in the morn. Keeps white bugs to a minimum. Once a week if not too bad. Every few nights if really bad. Pennies around the plant if slugs appear... They dislike copper. Oh, and dog food is a huge hit with slugs if you want to trap them in a bowl of beer. Sounds weird but read it in an "expert" gardening book.
Other than that, it's trial and error. But lots of LOVE and daily attention. All the best!
Aloha,
Lady Paisley.
hmmm. i dont know where my original post went! weird. dragonfruitladypaisley--are you suggesting neem oil to kill slugs? or is that for aphids and stuff? i h ave some neem oil in the house.... i am having huge slug problems...even the pea seedlings are being devoured as soon as they come up. have tried beer traps in the past with no luck... using organic slug pellets now but they are too pricey to use long term or over a broad area. i wonder about the pennies though. i wonder if irish pennies are made of copper..they are that copper-ish color. i have heard that the copper wire works well but it is super-pricey here...
