Give it to me Raw

I've been eating A LOT of fruit lately, sometimes that's all I eat in a day. I used to drink a lot of milk and have never had a cavity or any tooth problems, but my teeth aren't looking too strong the last few days! They even hurt a little bit today when I drank some peppermint tea. Has anyone had a similar experience after going raw? Can someone tell me some good dental health foods? I really don't wanna go back to drinking milk because I actually don't like the taste anymore after going raw. Thanks in advance!

I can't help specifically, Lockheart, but.....I'll say that you should proceed with caution and Google things like: "raw food + teeth + problem", and similar.

This is a hot button raw issue, so I'd advise you to look at many opinions and experiences before deciding what action to take. Basically it's not uncommon to have dental problems with certain types of raw food diets. Appartently, though, these problems can be cleared up and avoided by adjusting your current diet.

Sorry I can't really talk specifically, but I know you'll get some understanding with basic searches and other's feedback here at GI2MR.

Mike, high-fruit diets have caused rotting teeth among a lot of people. I never knew about this until I joined GI2MR, and since I've joined I've seen so many people deal with crumbling teeth after they went on a high-fruit diet. It's a popular topic, because it comes up fairly often. It's also a charged issue, because high-fruiters want to defend their diet and deny the long list of problems.

I suggest just searching GI2MR (in "forums") for "teeth" and "tooth" and "teeth rotting." There's plenty.

I highly recommend getting off fruit entirely (and any sweeteners other than stevia) for a while and doing lots of green juices along with whatever non-sweet foods you desire. If you are eating lots of salad and green juices, I wouldn't worry about being 100% raw. Sweets are the problem.

Good luck, and I hope this resolves quickly.

I don't think that fruit is the problem, perhaps certain fruits are the problem - or part of the problem. I'm on high fruit and have been for a pretty long time and I don't have this issue at all, if anything the sensitivity I had has gone away (to cool and extreme hot). I also eat seafoods though, so higher protein than most others on a high fruit. Then again, I don't eat a ton of greens all the time or drink green juices more than every once in a while.

It's a weird issue that maybe people are inclined to blame on fruit and people eating primarily fruit are inclined to deny the existence of. Personally, I would suggest cutting out the acidic stuff first like Cliff mentioned, if nothing else that's a smaller step that might yield the same results. If it doesn't clear up, I'd definitely go for a fruit break with lots of green stuff like Rawzilla says, then you can tell us what worked!

(Also, my gums do bleed when I eat pineapple consecutively for a few days. I think I might have a slight allergy to it though, the riper it is the more of a mouth-burn effect I get when I eat it >_>)

What long-term high-fruit raw diet eaters have dental problems? I don't know any. I know lots who have great teeth though.

Just do the search I suggested. Or check out the Natural Hygiene Inst. website. Plenty.

i agree. look at the examples of high fruit eaters with good teeth. i think often the teeth issue is a part of a transition maybe where the health state before may be causing the teeth issues. eating enough greens is important but i see alot of long term high fruit eaters with no teeth problems. i do think lots of green juices and smoothies will help remineralize your teeth though but don't necessarily blame the fruit.

I agree with you, Travis. I think this is why some people do really well on high-fruit low-fat diets, and some do not, prior health conditions that maybe weren't exhibiting symptoms.

Thank you both very much!

I agree with Cliff. Also, don't neglect the leafy greens!

"I really don't wanna go back to drinking milk"

Milk is not good for your teeth. The 'got milk?' brand of propaganda is distributed by large lobby groups for dairy products, and their interest is financial, not nutritional. Milk is an acidifying food, so your body leaches alkaline minerals like calcium from your bones and teeth to neutralize it. It is also a high protein food, which increases your calcium requirements to eliminate the excess protein. Read the China Study book by T. Colin Campbell if you want to see some original laboratory research data linking casein (milk protein) to cancer in rats, and/or the statistically significant correlations between high animal product consumption and degenerative disease in different Chinese counties. Milk does NOT do a body good!

I have read The China Study....great book.

One thing I have always wondered about it's findings though, is that one has to assume the studies involve conventional and most likely pasteurized, homogenized, industrial scale milk and dairy products. Thus the major negative impact on health.

I wonder if the results would be the same with raw, organic, local, fresh dairy products? One can only speculate.....but I think it would change the conclusions.
