Give it to me Raw

Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension, with dizziness) and staying raw

I was wondering if anyone has any advice about dealing with this condition. I've been 80% raw for about six months now, and often, 15 minutes to an hour after eating, my blood pressure will plummet. I get dizzy and feel disoriented, and have to sit down or lie down quickly. This happened yesterday after a meal of salad with avocado and dulse, a small amount of miso paste dressing, and a cacao smoothie made with bananas and almond milk. I find it happens more frequently if I eat a completely raw meal, and less frequently if I eat something like quinoa or chickpeas (cooked.) It also happened to me the other night after drinking the water from two coconuts.

I am at a healthy weight. I eat a ton of fruit (bananas, apples, blackberries, and gojis are my favorites), avocados, and greens. I take in about 1,500 calories a day. I think I have a pretty ideal diet, and I really want to stick to it, but my body seems to need small quantities of cooked carbs. Is there anything I should be doing? Do frequent dizzy spells merit a trip to a doctor or naturopath?

I am in NYC.

i used to get very dizzy as cooked vegan. my bp was getting low. not anymore though unless am fasting... or havent eaten for a very long time. but i would also like to know on this...

i have seen though that having young coconut water and green juices balance one out. this worked for me when i was going more raw from cooked vegan and my dizzy spells lessened. maybe you can try that!

Thanks, Aishwarya. Do you think the speed at which you eat or drink matters? I have always been a very fast eater, and if I am thirsty, I can drain a coconut in under a minute. Do you think attempting to slow down would make any difference?

Thanks you so much

could be. the more you stay calm and listen to your body it is better overall. i guzzle up too fast when am thirsty too. but i always feel better when i relax and have my drink or food.

i also benefitted from wheat grass juice. after practising too hard on martial arts i experienced dizzy spells even on high raw. i felt better with wheat grass juice or wheat grass powder in smoothies. high energy and stabilization.
do you have any caffeinated drinks? cacao?

what i meant was that some people get dizzy while doing cacao or even caffeine in small quantity while on mostly raw. its not recommended much if you are already dizzy.

The only caffeine I usually take in is raw cacao, but I would happily give it up to stop feeling dizzy! I will definitely also try to eat more slowly, and more frequently. Thank you!

Slow down!!! Makes a huge dif. You need to actually absorb the nutrients and enzymes in the food to digest them properly. Otherwise, you're not getting any nutritional value. Stop eating like a prison inmate on the run.

I've been a vegan for two years, but I take a B12 supplement. I've been tested, and my blood pressure is indeed low. I start to hyperventilate a bit, which probably makes it worse! I have the same problem many on here have with low calorie diets or fasting. If I drop much below 1500 calories, I don't have enough energy to get anything done. It just seems strange to me that a salad and coconut water sometimes makes me feel worse than cooked quinoa or brown rice.

Do you think this merits a visit to the doctor? I hope I'm not overreacting.

Yes, it's a high quality regular B12. Do you think stress could be contributing to this, though? I am currently job hunting and in the middle of applying to law school, so I am experiencing huge swings in energy. In general, I am pretty excited about the future, however. (I just got into Temple Law with a big scholarship!) I also take St. John's wort, and MSM, if those could be factors.

Thanks so much!

I used to have terrible depression, and worse breakouts. Both supplements helped enormously. I am a bit scared to discontinue :)

I haven't been to Philadelphia since I was little, but a weekend road trip is now in order! I think I'll finally take up consistent yoga practice :)

Exercise will help your depression. It helped me.

I think if you feel your body needs small quantities of cooked carbs, you should listen to your body. We are all so complex and different ad your body is your own. Do what makes you feel the most healthy.

I was at a red light. Same thing also happened to me when Rudy Guiliani crossed in front of my car. Hitting the gas did occur to me for a second or two.

Sure, too much fat is bad for the liver. But fat isn't per se bad for the liver, is it? Not only in 811 but also other people say to limit the fat but maybe raw plant fat helps to flush out some stuff out of the liver? When you've been on a fat fr...
