There is so much information on this site, more than you can get through in a day. Pretty much any question you have can be answered through here.

When it is you, an adult, sure just refusing is fine in many cases (not touching on this mandatory issue pertaining to the h1n1. I am speaking in general about vaccines). But when you are dealing with a family situation with children individual states/countries have their own laws and exemptions. Religious and medical are the most common and a handful of states also allow philosophical ("I don't want one for whichever reason") reasons to deny receiving immunizations. Most places you must provide either a valid medical reason (usually with a notified statement from a physician with diagnosis as to why the person can not receive a vaccine) or religious which can be tricky because some places claiming religious exemptions state that you are against any medical testing, injections no matter what kind, and in some cases medical treatment which is why it is suggested to write your own exemption but very cautious in wording the exemption not to incriminate yourself in any way. Also wording has to be precise as to not fall into the category of philosophical. You can not say I am religiously again it because many vaccines are made from aborted fetus tissues and my religion states abortion is wrong (that is considered philosophical. You have to state I am religiously opposed to the practice of vaccination. Now, as an adult this comes into play if you are looking to go to a college or university. They can deny you entrance unless you claim an exemption. Also, doctors offices can and do deny treatment to families who choose not the vaccinate. Doctors get monetary bonuses from drug and insurance companies based on the percentage of patients that are up to date on their immunizations so many doctors will refuse to treat patients who are not up to date. It is a battle that families must enter into with as much knowledge of their state laws as possible to protect their rights. Non vax families have done their education and feel that the risks out-way the benefits and many time are more educated on the matter than even those who give the injections.

I CAN SPEAK FOR MY KIDS THAT THEY DONT WANT ONE EITHER, IF I HAD KIDS..
