I am returning to high raw after a few months of eating more cooked foods, and I am wondering. Living in NYC, would you recommend a juice feast in the winter? I am feeling a bit cold right now, but also want to jumpstart my return to high raw.

Hey NYCgrrl! For me, winter is THE TIME to fast or drink juice - in the summer I cannot fast because I just want to be as active as possible. But my activity level drops during the colder months and I find myself naturally eating less and less and wanting to experiment with fasting more. So far it's happened every winter where I just...start fasting or juicing more. It feels better for me to do it during this hibernation time, rather then the active warmer months of the year.
I live up near Boston, and it just started getting snowy today. I have a space heater and blanket that I bring EVERYWHERE with me, so that I don't get cold.
i did a juice feast in the middle of winter. Go ahead and do it plus greens like kale will be cheaper. But I'd recommend adding some cayenne and other warming spices to your juices for a little extra warmth. For me the only down side was feeling cold in already cold weather.

When I fast in the winter, I include lots of teas and also I make a potassium veggie broth. I know it's cooked, but it doesn't have to be digested and it's loaded with minerals. I simmer carrots, potatoes, celery and sometimes beets (you could also add a little rinsed kelp or dulse) for about 45 min. and then I reheat the broth as needed. It makes a huge difference for me!
The most amazing fast I ever had was when I did all teas and potassium broth- I naturally entered this zen-like calm that I had heard about, but never experienced on a fast. I found myself at work one day (years ago) in a busy restaurant kitchen, prepping veggies, and I realized that I hadn't spoken a word to anyone around me in an hour. My mind had gone very inward and quiet.
I contemplated why that fast was different and the conclusion I cam to was that when I was juicing, I was thinking constantly about my body and what kind of juice to drink and how my cells were doing. With the tea and broth, which I could mindlessly prepare, I really wasn't physical-focused and I think that allowed my consciousness to shift and go deeper inward, beyond the physical.
thats a cool story erin.
i love when you come to the realization that you haven't spoken a word to someone in over an hour...haha, you catch yourself after being so peaceful! its pretty neat! :)
According to Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, our bodies go through cycles and everything has its own place. Each season brings with it its own challenges with respect to your health and needs for balance. The time when the seasons change is the best time to do cleansing.
Spring, especially, is considered an ideal time to rejuvenate the physiology, in keeping with Nature's own calendar for rejuvenation. Winter? Not so much. Winter is the time for lots of rest (nights are long and we sleep when it's dark, so we get plenty of rest so the body can repair its systems) and reflection.
Unfortunately, many have lost the innate wisdom about living and eating in accordance with seasons.

Resting is recommended on a fast, that's why the hibernation of winter seems to work well for some. I enjoy the long quiet nights of winter and do appreciate this in combination with the fasting lull. (as long as my heater is on ;-p )

The opposite is NOT true (lesbian women loving men...), so is there something wrong with men?
