Give it to me Raw

Hi =)
My name is Miranda. I'm 18 years old and come from Austria. I live in the UK at the moment and will stay there for the next five years. I first heard about raw foods about two years ago, but only recently did i realise that i really want to commit to this. i know that i am not going to be able to do 100%, but i am aiming for at least 80% on most days!

i have a few problems though. i'm a poor student, and i set myself a limit of spending 50 pounds a week, which is quite a lot compared to what other students spend. fruit and vegetables are not cheap, especially not "special foods" such as dried fruit (goji berries for example) or nuts. i also don't have a blender/juicer (i am going to ask my mother for one for christmas though! any recommendations?) . what would you do in my situation?

i also got my mother into eating lots of salads. she always tells me on the phone that she's had one, which makes me really happy =)

some other things about me!
- i want to study physics or medicine, but i might end up doing something entirely different, i think. i'll just let life surprise me.
- i love reading. i pretty much devour anything readable. i love learning new things, such as languages, and i'm interested in pretty much everything!
- i just got into exercising, and i love it. it makes me feel very energetic and happy! what's your favourite exercise?
- i also like watching TV, i admit it! =) my favourite series are house and gilmore girls.

anyone want to, um, become friendly-ish? someone who's just getting into raw foods would be great, we could share our experiences and progress!

Kale and other leafy greens are packed with nutrients - protein, calcium, iron etc. and are inexpensive.
Frozen berries might be cheaper than fresh ones and are not heated before they are frozen like most veggies are. Bananas are cheap compared to the fulness they give. For a lot of Raw Foodies they're the daily bread.
You can grow herbs in your window shelf and save £.
Seeds are cheaper than nuts and as far as I know they are almost always raw - unless it says roasted. With nuts it's difficult to know for sure.
Buy in season it's a lot cheaper. Try to find a market or a farm near by? Maybe som UK residents can give you some good tips on shopping raw on a budget? Where in the UK are you?

I might get butchered (!) for this, but I don't think you absolutely need goji berries, maca, cacao etc. Lots of fruit, leafy greens and a few nuts og seeds a day and you're in business.
I highly recommend http://www.nutridiary.com/ if you want to keep track of what you are eating, proteins, vitamins etc.
Welcome - and I've added you as a friend. :)

You should call to find out if you can get Albert's Organic's wholesale produce. I manage a grocery buying club through UNFI (United Natural Foods - Iowa City). Because I have maintained a group order of $1000 a month for a certain time period I qualify to shop from their affiliate, Alberts Organics. I get a 15 page price sheet every monday and can order once a month and have it ship with my UNFI order. This past month I was able to order 375+ pounds of fresh fruits & greens for $440 sales tax free.

UNFI is opening no new buying clubs at this time, but if you call them they will probably be able to help you find a club in your area and you can talk to that club coordinator about arranging to get produce thru Alberts.

OR maybe you could go straight to Alberts Organics? Dunno, never tried that.

I just started raw too! and fruits and veggies are wicked expensive! Just out of college with loans on my back and a crappy paying job in the US job market sucks! Oh well, I may be taking Rawzillas advice and getting leafy greens and frozen berries.

OMG!!!! That's so unfair. Just read that you are from Austria and then I saw you won't be there for the next 5 years or so :)
Damn.... Save Austria, people, where are you Austrian raw foodies?
Err, well, anyway... I'd love to get and stay in touch if you like. I'm (as you might have expected) from Austria too and I spent the whole last year as an erasmus student in the UK (Liverpool). I totally feel you re spendind shitloads of money just for produce (I guess you may have a better point to start at in London at least, regarding farmers markets, wholefoods etc).
I'd love to write more when I have more time later, maybe we could also exchange email adresses?!
Enjoy your stay in England! (such a great raw community up there... I really miss it. If you haven't discovered this yet: join rawfooduk! It's a yahoo forum full of nice people and useful information plus announcements about potlucks etc :) )

Hi,
I'm new to raw foods but have done a bit of reading on it.
I have a Jack La Lanne juicer, its quite good. For a blender I've heard Vita-mies are quite good, but expensive.
I've also started doing some research on wild greens which can be grown in your garden or even found in the park.
There are some vids in youtube by rawmodel and shazzie. They would be free and very good for you.
I like playing sports, going gym and doing yoga.
I've seen House a cpl of times and its quite good, but am tryng to cut down on watcing tv.
Hope this is of some help.

I am just starting too! Gaining knowledge!
I am looking into trying to find a Raw based retreat ...I will be graduating from college in December (New York) and want to find a place that might do a sort of work-study or internship...like working in-exchange for learning and living in order to increase my knowledge and take some time to re-focus myself.

If you are interested , we should look around !

I think there's something missing here lol. Eating well and taking care of our body is important, but if our merit runs out and our negative karma takes over, it doesn't matter how well we eat. Anne Wigmore was a long time raw foodist, and she died…
