I am in the process of transitioning my family into the raw lifestyle. As a working mom, I find it helpful to have certain staples in the pantry and always on hand. Even as a vegan for many years, it was convenient to have quick snack options and items that I could grab in a hurry to make a quick meal.
I'm sure a few of you will recommend fruit and veggies to keep on hand. However, I always keep a lot of fresh produce for juicing, smoothies and salads. I’m curious about what staples or snacks you keep in the pantry?
I figured other people wondered about this too. As a mother it will definitely be helpful to keep healthy snacks and quick meal options available for my toddler.
Welcome Alicia! Looks like you're in the NYC area? You can buy pre-made snacks at the store -- Whole Foods, Integral Yoga Nutrition 229 West 13th Street, or Health Nuts on 99th and Broadway. Those can be helpful for transitioning.
Of course, the quickest, traveling-est snack is fruit and nuts. Apple, pear, banana, grapes, orange...some nuts or seeds...stuff it in your bag and you'll be fine all day!
i used to have a pantry full of stuffs (carob, lucuma, irish moss, dulse, nori, all kinds of soaked and dehydrated nuts/seeds), but am doing my best to cut back on it all b/c it can get to be expensive. plus if it's there, i am going to eat it.
the one tip that i'd advise while transitioning is to buy all kinds of nuts and seeds. soaked and dehydrate them, then grind them up and store in the freezer. this way whenever you want to make something that has nuts/seeds (dressings, desserts, burgers, whatever) they are ready to go.
Thanks for the tip! I never thought of freezing nuts/seeds after soaking. That will definitely be a time saver, especially when preparing meals during the week after work.
celery is hugely important in my diet,as i dont add salt to anything..when i do have the occasional piece of sunbread or raw chocolate which contains salt,i reallllly feel it quite negatively....
great advice Loren :)
Great points RG you're right, one size dosent fit all. For me it was purely a health thing to start, but then as you so well described it, the layers started peeling back. It really took me by surprise, was very unexpected, which is why I now just...
Hi Nicole,
How old is your son? As far as diet, I would be giving him plenty of fruit, and plenty of simple salads, including lots of tomatoes and perhaps some celery as both are high in sodium.
But as I understand it, salt cravings are usually ...
Hi Loren. Thanks for that info. I often hear Naturopaths comment on how children with autism are often lacking in sodium and reccomend increasing their salt intake. I have a son on the autism spectrum and he craves salt. He drinks green smoothies ...
