I've been wanting to purchase a new blender and i'm stuck between VitaMix and BlendTec. I wanna use it to make my own nut and seed butters as well as green smoothies and other goodies. Any advice?
I say Vitamix. I've bought two and love them. I've seen Blendtec but never used. I like that Blendtec has 3hp motor, but for personal use, the 2hp Vitamix is perfect (and quite loud at only 2 hp). The big one that takes me to Vitamix is the plunger. When making thick things like seed cheese or the nut things you plan on making. The plunger makes it possible and I don't know how it would be possible to make this with the Blendtec without turning it on and off 20x to push the thick crap back down into the blades.
Also, I'm a simple person and the weird digital illuminated front of the Blendtec is a little much for me.
Vitamix 5200 -
Peace

I have a Blendtec and it is very powerful. I have to admit, I wish it had a plunger so I wouldn't have to take the lid off occasionally; however, I could not keep a Vitamix on the counter because it won't fit under the cabinets like a Blendtec will.
I'm with jason. I have the vitamix. I use the blendtec often at Natural Zing and I used it a few days in the kitchen at Raw Spirit Festival but was glad to have my vitamix back home. I use the plunger all the time. It's a must for making my cashew butter and raw fudge. I use it for the green smoothies and would like to get the dry grinder attachment.
On the other hand, blendtec was quieter, and it came in handy to use pre-set functions when making gallons of raw tahini dressing for 2000 raw spirit foodies!
As far as I know, blendtec is still using a bpa containing container. Bad news, especially if you plan to make a hot soup. Vitamix sounds all around like the more genuine company and I'm definitely saving up for one.
Okay, so I knew bpa was bad, but couldn't remember what it stood for. Here's an article about it from the New York Times: Toxins in plastic
Bisphenol-a, or BPA, is commonly used in the production of polycarbonate plastics as well as the epoxy resins that line the inside of most food and beverage cans.
The plastics and coatings made with BPA have many attractive properties. They are, among other things, particularly good at not absorbing flavors or changing the flavor of items stored in them. Polycarbonate looks and feels like glass but is light and difficult to break.
As a result, about 6.6 billion pounds of BPA is produced worldwide each year.

However, I am biased, I am a Vita-Mix sales demonstrator!
I would be happy to answer any Vita-Mix related questions and I have some recipes on my website at: www.VitaMixLady.com
I HIGHLY recommend joining the Vita-Mix User's Yahoo Group (the link is on my website). A hand full of members of that list are raw foodists (or heading that way). If you are on that list you will get recipes, troubleshooting advice, tips and tricks and constant encouragement to use your Vita-Mix to its fullest potential (it is not just a juicer!)

I went with blentec for 3 reasons. #1 Its not as tall as Vitamix and fits better in my kitchen. #2 Its not as loud as Vitamix and it has more power. With the Vitamix I'd be holding my ears while it was running and my pets would run for cover afraid to come back out. The whole kitchen counter shook like it was headed for lift off. #3 I had a vitamix for 2 weeks and returned it after it jammed several times and bc of #1 and #2. I love my blentec and its powerful enough you don't need a plunger. Don't just take my word for it. Buy them both try them and take back the one you don't like. They are both guaranteed. U can generally find both at Costco.
I believe that the natural state of the body is health, and that it is always trying to get 'there'.
This thread makes me think of "The Right Use of Will" series by Ceanne DeRohan.
Anybody ever read any of those books? If you have, message me......
