Give it to me Raw

Last week we talked about your money and how you spend is spent differently since embarking on your raw journey.

This week I want to talk about spending time (aka "clock time" for all your Eckhart Tolle fans).

One of the biggest concerns that people have when they "go raw" is that their social life will evaporate - especially since so much of what humans do involves food. Even on this website that concern seems to be a reoccurring theme in blog posts and discussions.

Some of that concern is preemptive worry, but a lot of it is very legitimate. Who will I hang out with? What will I do on Thanks Giving? How will I spend my weekends?

So let me ask you, How do you spend your time now? Specifically, how do you spend time in a way that you previously didn't? How are your weekends different?

Also, I'd love to hear a story or two about how you've adapted to certain social situations now that you eat the way you do.

Again, specificity is king! Let's hear some great stories.

My ideal day would be waking up in a fabulous and airy beachfront home, hearing the crashing surf and feeling the sea breeze through the windows, running down to enjoy some healthy breakfast with lots of fruits and veggies and playing with my kids a while, then a bit later working in my office overlooking the ocean without ever having to get in a car and drive to some employer. Being the master of my own fate in health, in career, and in all the areas of life. The days begin and end with my kids. I would home school them if I had the opportunity. That's my dream at least.

What inspiring stories! Well, for me pre-raw I lived a pretty isolated life... I spent a lot of time indoors, although I was consciously trying to take more walks(I was in college) and be outside more, it still wasn't much compared to how I am now... my family has a serious case of nature-phobia. So I stayed inside a lot, watched what was pretty decent TV as TV goes, listened to a lot of awesome music, wrote a lot, spent a lot of time on the internet, chatted on the phone a lot, and I actually spent a hell of a lot more time then preparing my food, trying to figure out what would be the best thing to eat and then cooking and seasoning the hell out of it. I did some meditating, some dancing, but all in all, I was discovering myself and was very quiet to the world about the things I was doing, and felt a little strange about doing them, because I didn't really know what others would think about it.

Then I quit college, moved in with my partner and started a yoga teacher training where we were introduced to raw. Obviously, I was doing a lot of yoga at that time. I also started studying on my spare time things about food, spirituality and the body, so I started reading a lot. I started crafting a lot, sewing, painting, knitting, etc. and "hanging out" at the local co-op. Our fun was going to the co-op. We also started hanging out at the park and trying to get more people into yoga and serving lots of raw foods to people. I definately fell in love with nature at that point, and we started a garden. We did a lot of chanting together and went to some art events and just visited with friends who understood what we were doing.

Cut to these days... these days I'm even more addicted to nature, I eat outside as much as possible. We spend a lot of time playing music with friends, eating with friends(they're all open or even into raw foods), playing chess, doing yoga/chanting, we have lots of drum circles, a fire pit in the backyard and we hang out less at the grocery store, we've become more raw than we were back then and food is more of a joy, less of an addiction. I'm still trying to navigate that path of social situations with family... it can be dread... I try to offer them a chance to do yoga and talk about positive things. Or else I go play chess with my cousin, or go get on the computer or go stand outside, or write(I carry my writing tools with me everywhere I go). I have to do things they can relate to... try to get them active, because I can't stand to be around 10 TV's on in one house at a time.... so I try to show off some music to them or do some dancing or something... well, I don't really do that much, it makes me feel vulnerable to their judgement but I have done it and strive to do it more.

I think as far as family goes, there are long, binding habits within them, and people are reluctant to change their ways. With families, the old habits are much less likely to be challenged because the people within the family grow up with the same customs and they reinforce them between each other. They are a unit and it's hard to overturn that mentality. Really the best solution is what you are doing, change yourself, do better, live better, have more fun, and they will see you thrive and get curious. Family most often has to come to one that changes, not the other way around. Keep on dancing! : )

I spent my time going through the gauntlet of life this year. Because I sacrificed and stayed in nursing school, I'll be able to lead a rawsome raw lifestyle. I've learned this whole year that leading a healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent disease and stay out of a nursing home.

You know one of the biggest reasons I went back to school was to follow my dream and SHOW my kids that it was IMPORTANT to do so. That was one of my major motivations- what they learned from my action, instead of just words. Now I am applying that same thinking to my diet and lifestyle. I am preparing myself to have more integration between my philosophy and action. I want to look back with integrity, and say I actively lived what I wanted instead of settling for some other activity or agenda that was never truly mine and was never what I wanted. We have the remarkable ability to choose our own path and feel complete down to the core of who and what we are, but only if we break out of the adopted ideas we have accepted as our own. It's a challange and a journey but is also a liberation.

Surprisingly enough, my life has become more social since I've become a raw vegan. When I first began my journey into raw veganism I joined..... raw food meetup groups, facebook groups, GITMR, online forums, and made friends with online fellow local raw foodies. I used to make friends by chance meeting in person, but when I went raw I searched the e-world to learn about nutrition and I found friends a long the way. I've become more confident, know what I want, and have changed into a stronger person as I have discovered raw foods.

I think if you want to be a social raw vegan you can be. Just do it, be the person you want to be. In the end all that matters is you, what you think of yourself, and your happiness. Bless you!

awesome LF, have confidence in RAW, be the person you want to be.
same kinda story for me, after personal crisis and series of shutting down and saying NO to meat NO to animal products NO to pesticdes and NO to cooking and battling with the demons within - "go on have some chips" - "go on have some chocolate" etc..I eventually came out of the murky confusing middle ground, I transited to PURELY RAW, - NOW - NO cravings, NO binging, NO supressing of emotions, NO problem,... YES to raw, YES to organic, YES to life, YES to abundance, YES to raw friends, YES to LOVE...
I spend my time when not on here, shopping in local wholefood shops, cycling, preparing raw food, giving presentations, workshops, retreats, dinner parties, photography, website,
immersing myself in nature or reggae music or food with friends or on a good day all 3 ; )

music is the key,
blend in harmony...
peace

Excellantly inspiring... raw friends are awesome, and those who are interested too, music really is the key that brings it all together, if it wasn't for the music, we wouldn't have shared our eating preferences successfully probably... we would just offer our friends what we made for ourselves and because of the vibe we shared in jam sessions and drum circles they were comfortable enough to try!

I am more focused on creating a life full of the things I find in enjoyable, success can only be measured by how happy you are!!! I'm less concerned with what other people think of me, and therefore so much more comfortable in my own skin and doing the things I love!
I'm focused on being grateful for everything, my bills included, it's a wonderful world out there!! I'm so grateful I found a much happier, much more peaceful me. Martha Beck said on an Oprah show that she counsels heroin addicts and that she tells them that if you create your life the right way, everyday should feel like a heroin high but without the heroin. I didn't understand that before but now I am starting to get it with all my heart and soul!!! I am so grateful for all the amazing things I have and my amazing family, friends and most of all for the opportunity to get up and see the sunrise again!!! I'm just so much more in tune to the wonderfulness of the world and it feels so good!!
