  • How do you shop? What do you buy and where AND what do you grow? Added by Dhrumil on August 16, 2009 at 2:06pm in GI2MR Collective Wisdom
What I'm very interested in hearing is how you buy your food and where you buy your food.

How do you spread your budget around to get the best produce and the best price? So if you wouldn't mind sharing....

    Questions

    1) What do you buy at your local natural foods store?

    2) What do you buy from your local farmers market?

    3) Do you grow anything? If so what?

    4) Do you buy anything in bulk online? Like herbs, teas, nuts, etcs

    5) How much money do you spend on average in a month?

    Holla at your boy...

Hey Baugh! I look for organics frts & vegs on sale, and finaggle at frms mkt for last-minute deals, esp wild plants. I'm gonna place my first EarthShiftProducts.com order tom'w for bulk many things - maca, herbs, things recommended in longevitynow. It'll be one to three hundred bux. don't know my food budget, but i save a lot by not eating out much (don't miss it), fancy coffees and snacks, doctor visits.

When I went raw last Jan, I liked how my typical trail at Whole Foods evaporated. Now I hardly go there, except if I'm feeling social, but not for salad bar anymore, or to eat, for that matter.

    1) I buy most of my produce at my excellent local market Community Market.

    2) haven't been to a farmer's market in months

    3) right now raspberries, cucumbers, a few tomatoes, some volunteer squash plants, green beans (family eats em)

    4) I'm looking into ordering some tropical fruit from Florida, but haven't done so yet.

    5) I spend $200-400 a month buying all my own food in Northern California. Easy! And no medical bills or supplements to buy on the side.

    1) Most of my produce comes from my natural food store

    2) Greens and mangos come from my farmer's market sometimes

    3) I am growing herbs, tomatoes, and cucumbers (currently - more to follow)

    4) Don't like online shopping. Living Nutz, maybe, when I get cravings :-)

    5) Without the raw cafe dining, probably $550 a month, more if I feel like making fancy items.

I pride myself on the fact that the largest "payment" I have each month is my food bill. Best investment I ever made. In fact, I do remember the less than desirable income I was bringing in just 4 short years ago, and my budget was about $30 per week, and I really had to scrape and claw. These days, I don't even look at the pricetags because the price of organic and raw is least of my worries :-)

    Great post, Dhru!

    Hey Guys!!

    1) Everything from natural hygiene to almond butter....

    2) I buy most of the fruits and vegetable from the farmers markets... I have found that going to the markets just before they close, the vendors are selling their produce with the big discount,,,,

    3) I used to grow the greens, tomatoes and cucumbers, but now live in the apartment and dont have a land to do it anymore...

    4) I buy most of the nuts and seeds online (bulk) - it seems to be cheaper than local health stores

    5) i love good food - maybe $400 - $500 a month

    Have a wonderful day!!!!

Yeah, in CA they are sold pasteurized in stores. But at the farmers markets, farmers are not REQUIRED to pasteurize them. I know some of the farmers at the market where I live. A couple vendors do NOT have raw almonds, and there are 2 that do. They are the best tasting almonds around, I can tell that they are raw :)

I just made an online order for Raw Almonds from the Briden Wilson Farm in CA. They had just announced their harvest and I bought a bunch of almonds and a couple of jars of their almond butter. I can't wait to recieve my package. Their website is below:

I buy a lot of fruit - bananas, apples, pears, pineapples or whatever is in season and spinach, kale, arugula etc. I typically shop at Whole Foods so I probably spend about 4-500 at month...they are quite expensive but I'm worth it! I don't grow anything and I don't buy bulk items online.
