Give it to me Raw

Hi everyone,

I've just recently gone raw (90% for a week now).

I'm interested in a raw diet for all its wondrous properties, but also specifically for body fat loss.

I notice there's a lot of discussion here about 80/10/10 and low fat vegan raw lifestyles.

It seems that my inclination now is to have a quart of green smoothie for breakfast and salads with goodly amounts of oil, avocado, and nuts for lunch and dinner. When I look at the nutritional info for this diet on sites like thedailyplate, it shows me that the majority of my calories are coming from fat.

I like eating this way, I feel content and satisfied, and I'm coming in at just around my daily calorie goal (1900 - 2000) that conventional sources claim will yield about a pound of fat loss a week. I also feel like I'm eating plenty of fruits and vegetables (relative, at least, to my previous SAD diet).

Yet with so many brilliant folks here talking about low fat, I wonder if there's something I'm not understanding or missing out on. Could anyone clarify for me?

I don't understand the low fat thing, quite honestly. I find nothing wrong with raw fats, and my body reacts very nicely to them.

Raw comfort foods? :-)

JuiceItUp,

Yes, from what I've been reading I agree with you about dietary fat not causing adipose accumulation. I've also come across some stuff about how insulin spikes, even more so than calorie amounts, cause the storage of body fat. Looking at the glycemic index, I notice that avocado has one of the lowest numbers, suggesting that it triggers relatively little insulin release.

This adds up in my mind to mean that getting a large percentage of calories in my diet from the marvelous and tummy-happy-making avocado would be a good idea for fat loss. But I questioned that notion when I saw so many posters advising 80/10/10- ish schemes for fat loss instead. Perhaps the caloric density of raw fat is what folks are cautioning against? I guess it would certainly be easier for me to eat excessive avocado calories than excessive apple calories, for example.

Juice it up,

The low fat raw approach to eating has nothing to do with body fat. Its generally accepted either as a concept, or through experience that people can struggle to gain weight on a diet high in plant fats.

The reason most people dont stick to the diet is because they get deficient either in calories, protein, efa's or minerals. Its not that the diet cant be providing sufficient nutrients with a low fat intake, its that people often just dont plan their diets well.

Take care

I would advise that in the beginning stages not to worry about fat content, food combining or any of the other specifications surrounding what is 'wright' and what is 'wrong' with regards to consuming raw food. Just eat what taste good and keeps you away from the sad diet.

It may sound naiive to think that your body will eventually adjust your pallet, but, as long as your paying attention, this is exactly what your body will do.

Keep eating whatever raw food you like, pay attention to what happens during and after you finish eating it (how do you feel? Is degesting this food comfortable? and so forth) Incorporate habits that you KNOW are good for you. Like Drinking more water or eating as much hydrating food as you can throughout the day. Adding more and more dark leafy greens.

i second this.

don't worry, just eat and eat what you enjoy. pleasure, pleasure, pleasure and drink tons of water cause you'll be detoxing. get some hydro colon therapy done and take up skin brushing.

you will totally lean out.

somewhere down the line...you might find that you feel better on more sugars (fruits) and sluggish on fats OR you could find the opposite. some people's constitution runs best on fat, others sugar. others, somewhere in between.

i find i need lots of fat to stay feeling good and lean. you'll figure out what's best for you eventually. but for now, just eat, find your favourite foods, enjoy and drink tons of water.

Amber,

Thanks-- sounds totally sensible. Especially the part about the leafy greens. I've been green-starved my whole life, I'm only now realizing.

Nothing wrong with fat at all. But like everything dont overdue it. I found 8/1/1 to be too resticting. No herbs, roots, mushrooms, and less than 10% from fat. What the hell is that? If you restricted a wild animal to that kind of lifestyle they would totally flip out. haha cant you just see a cow or chimp freaking out that they consumed too much fat? haha yeah right!
Follow you heart and listen to your body and not your mind.

Vaughn,

I like the ring of that advice a lot: "Follow your heart and listen to your body and not your mind." Trouble is, just now, my mind-body connection is pretty confused. For years I thought (ha-ha!) that my body wanted pizza and pasta. How do you go about tuning in to what your body wants?

Your body did not want pizza and pasta. You (your mind) wanted pizza and pasta because that is what you were accustomed to. Eat as raw as possible and soon your body will crave raw foods instead. It all takes time and dont rush things. Learn yoga and learn how to meditate. These two help you reconnect with your body and its needs.

You can eat FRESH herbs like basil and parsley and cilantro :) And you can eat root veggies, just not on a daily basis.

a lot of people tend to find that after doing raw for a while, they gravitate naturally to low-fat. as for me, i jumped right in with 811 and found it gave me all sorts of trouble. but when i went to the other extreme (major fat), i still naturally lessened my fat intake until now without even thinking about it.
eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, and stock your pantry and fridge with stuff you like. try not to let any shoulds come into play in this game.

I do like the Violent Femmes but I think that is too pessimistic. Nihilistic hard driving folk.

Soft rock is soft, not driving rock, but soft gushy love songs, romantic, smooth..stuff you are embarrassed to admit you like. Stuff that makes you imagine you are swimming with sea horses, or hanging out on a rainbow with your love.

Only because Suvine asked me to. I have almost no idea what qualifies as soft rock, but if most of the music here is any indication, that's probably because I don't actually like soft rock. For the most part. Does Queen qualify as soft rock? I ha...
