Give it to me Raw

Galen

hey! raw college athlete taking a spring semester break from school: raw jobs/activities?

Hey fellow raw-lifers,

I'm a senior at New York University, burnt out on school and taking the spring semester off. I'm very interested in sustainable organic living, outdoor physical activity (especially gardening/farming, sports/games, dancing), and being apart of a stimulating social community.

I'm looking to share enjoyment of life with like-minded people for seven months before I return to school in Fall '09 to graduate.

FYI:
I am majoring in history but have undertaken a broad collegiate education (creative writing, philosophy, political science, music theory, cooking, anatomy via dance, sculpture, art history, sociology, business, [environmental] law, anthropology, and consumerism studies). While I did not take math in college, I was very good at it in high school (pre-calculus).

...based on a year of fairly intense research and observation, I am a strong believer in the "use it or lose it" philosophy; I am always happy--even desirous--to help.

However, I do have some student loans I would like to start
paying off; I would prefer to spend my 'leave of absence' in
a place where I can make some kind of income while being
active.

...and I love kids.

SO any advice on communities/jobs to check out, and/or if you know
of anyone/friends/employers that are looking for a guy of my background/interests...'much appreciated!!

Cheers,
Galen

P.S. unless international flights are paid for, I'm looking mostly in the U.S. (especially Oregon, California, and Massachusetts)

Galen,

Bunch of similarities! Don't know if I can help you much - I'm a junior going to school in Cambridge, MA and have been raw since a month after I got here freshman year. I'm also an athlete (tennis team) and I am as well thinking of taking a year or two off after this year to pursue studying/traveling abroad and similar raw-related things.

As for the Boston area, there's a raw restaurant in the North End called Grezzo which is owned by Alyssa Cohen. It's pretty high-end and the waiters are paid well. Apparently the Boston raw food community is not small, and there's another raw restaurant 30 minutes from Boston by train.

If you do find anything please let me know since I'm in the same boat as you; otherwise good luck and enjoy your break.

saweeet; I'll keep you posted. Definitely do the craigslist search suggested below.

I've put "raw food" or "raw vegan" or "raw cuisine" or "organic farming" (things like that) in several different cities on craigslist (in California). There are usually 2 or 3 jobs that come up, sometimes more.

haha good call; I actually did that (craigslist search) right after I posted the above message last night. keep the suggestions coming!

Are you interested in South Carolina?

Last year I took off Spring quarter and traveled with parents for a week in Netherlands and a week in London. Then I went by myself to stay with my uncle, an amazing man, and learned from him and visited relatives all across the southeast part of South Africa. After coming back from South Africa I worked during the summer at a computer science internship, and once that was done I worked at a different company (private equity website) for a month before coming to Fukuoka, Japan.

The bottom line: it is so incredibly rewarding to treat yourself to these sorts of experiences. While my initial 2 years at university were also incredibly beneficial and absolutely necessary, this is the continuation of that process, and it feels very right and natural. Perhaps it is/will be the same for you.

Jobs eh... you're doing the right thing! Keep asking your friends for opportunities, that's where I got info on two of my jobs during college. Fun stuff.

In my opinion, no need to force this adventure of yours; perhaps it will unfold naturally and to your liking.

awesome, thanks!

the force/pressure is definitely the social/parental pressure...and I'm doing my best to abate it!

I've met some hit chix on GITMR. Not satisfying in the least. Just the opposite. Most communication is self-defeating, accomplishes nothing. I would love it if people would leave me alone when I'm out and about. Anybody else?

Mariam, watching this raises questions: for instance, is this guy just an actor? Seems like it. "Am I glad I went"? Well, in the sense that I knew I had to see him eventually.....I guess I got it over with (and used up my airline credit). Is he a...

Thank you Wrenn that is what I thought too and your comments are very helpful! I think it would also be cool at $.99 for 5 TOTALLY new raw recipes and then it can be a series of them at $.99 each...thanks for your comment!
