Give it to me Raw

Hi there,

I've been raw for 15 months -- off and on 100 percent, but lately hanging around 85 percent and want to move back to the high 90s range. Here's my problem: I was in a car accident 8 years ago and received a very nasty break to my right forearm (actually 6 breaks). I had to undergo surgery where they put a couple of metal plates and about 20 screws into my arm and it took about 6 months for my bones to fully heal. I had to take calcium supplements and use a bone stimulator. For the last year, the metal has really been bothering me a lot and have subsequently made arrangements to go back into surgery next month to remove it. I'm totally freaking out. 1.) I wonder what I should do to prepare for surgery, 2.) will my being raw if negative effects on going into surgery, i.e. will the medications be too strong for me, and 3) the bones in my right arm will be very weak again after the metal and pins are removed. I don't take calcium supplements or do dairy -- only greens. Should I increase my greens? How much is recommended? Should I take supplements? My surgeon is recommending red meat, dairy and supplements--yet I've heard that that actually depletes calcium. I love this board because so many people here seem very clued in to nutrition. I'm curious what your thoughts are on preparing for surgery (going under) and calcium replacement for weak bones. Thank you so very much

this bit about coconut milk is interesting. i still havent read those chapters, Reese. i soon will though. but tell me how raw coconut cream helps here? as in with broken bones... Does it help bone diseases too as well?

i dont get raw dairy here. searching for raw cheese or butter. nowhere near. i get raw buffalo milk and goat milk though but i dont want to have raw milk so far. Thanks Reese.

so it is good calcium. great too know. i would read that soon. thanks.

would so love raw cheese. how do you make them at home if you get raw goat's milk? we get raw goat milk here.

thank you, RawZi! I was considering the raw milk. I drank that a year ago but stopped when my body stopped craving it. I'll look into again.

Wow, taller? That's amazing. I do raw cheese when I go to Europe. I was just there a month ago. I do raw milk ocassionally at home, but off and on. Sometimes I go month without it and then I'll buy a carton and drink half. I kind of let my body crave what it wants. If I am eating high raw, it craves the right foods, the things I need. But if I eat cooked foods several times in a single week, I'm not so sure I can trust my cravings so much.

As for the cucumber, do you drink or apply directly to the scar? I've been using an OTC scar treatment cream and some rose hips oil on the scars. I drink cucumber juice sometimes.

Solomons seal is a great tea to drink for strengthing bones. Simmer for 15 minutes then strain out the root. If you have a dog you can feet the left over root to it too! I have tested it on myself and drunk about 32 oz at one sitting and felt fine. I had a couple other people try it at work and they felt fine too- I would say it actually made my stomach feel good. Anything with silica is good to eat or take as well. Just be careful because something like ginger can thin your blood before surgery. I'd stay away from celery too.

What your Dr. said was ridiculous. If you want to follow what he says you could have some salmon sushi and sweet n sour soup- both high in minerals due to the seaweed. Sesame seeds are high in calcium too so tahini, gomashio, or the candy- halva- made with sesame seeds would be good to eat.

Good luck with everything. Gaba is also good for pain after the surgery. Love and Light Liz

Hi,
I had a medication, that took out the calcium of my bones, and i tried everything with meat, milk and cheese and mineral supplement, and nothing worked. then i tried cooked vegetarian, then cooked vegan, nothing did help.
Now for bout 4 months raw, my calcium comes back again, and I think its because of the lots of dark green salad i eat, as "pink lady apple" said. This is my experience.
All the meat and diary products and supplements didnt help - i even have the feeling, that it took out even more calcium of my bones.
When you look at the bones of domesticated animals, that are there for being eaten, you see a lot of osteoporosis at these animals. They are given medications and hormons, that concentrate the mass-grow on their meat or on producing more lymph (=milk), and not on their bones. They dont see sunlight(=dont build VitaminD for their bones). they even dont move, what would help their bones too. When you eat their meat and their lymph-products(=milk+milkproducts), guess what will happen? You really think you will have strong bones????

For me Vegan Raw, lots of greens, and using my bones with muscles tearing on them worked the best.

Thank you so much to everyone for such fantastic input!! I am truly grateful for this. Such good information.

Rawtastic: OMG! I drink celery and ginger juice at least 4x per week. I didn't even think about how ginger thins the blood. And I just bought two bunches of celery tonight to juice for the next two days. Does celery juice thin the blood also? I thought it was supposed to be high in calcium, so I've been drinking it. I'll definitely look into Salmons Seal this weekend. I've never even heard of that.

Pink Lady: Thank you for the list of greens. Very good to know. I'll start loading up on more of those greens. As for the metal, I have to rods (one five inches long, the other six) and about twenty pins. They are all in my forearm. It's awful during cold weather, achy a lot, and very painful if I hit my arm on a table or something by accident. On several occasions, I've hit it and it get very hot and swells up for a couple of weeks. The doc says it's my body recognizing there is a foreign object in my body and treats it as if it were bacteria by heating the area up. Also, I have a lot of internal scar tissue, so when it becomes painful if I try to excercise or do a lot of writing. It feels like everything just tightens up. I've had all this hardware in my arm for 8 years and it's hurt off and on the entire time, but this year it has hurt the most, almost all the time. Thanks for asking. Sometimes it helps just talking about it.

Hahapapaya: Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your story about the meds. It's so helpful to hear personal testimony that greens alone is more effective than anything else. I actually went out and bought some raw milk tonight, but now after reading these wonderful threads, I'm going to really up my greens.

I am concerned about the antibiotics I know they are going to pump me up with. I'll just have to do probiotics when I get home. Surgery is set for Dec 9th. I'll definitely report back and let you know of my progress. I understand my arm will be very fragile for the next 6-12 months after surgery and that I will have a 45% chance of refracture. I'll be wearing a splint to protect it most of the time, and will be doing heavy greens. I'll try to post my progress from time to time.

Thanks again. -- Jessica

Hi Jessicat!

The reason I mentioned the celery is because it can lower your blood pressure- so it's not very good to have blood pressure changes when you are undergoing a medical procedure- because even if you are asleep your body can go into shock and blood pressure can drop. Especially if you are juicing because the amount of nutrients is greatly concentrated- so the effects can be more dramatic.

It would be better to get those same nutrients temporarily from seaweed and sesame seed\tahini, halva, etc.

Good luck with everything and you're welcome!!!! =)

Hi, I was randomly searching around on the web for Raw Vegan/ Surgery. Due to the fact that I had septum surgery Of which part of my septum was removed. Shortly after the surgery I got a hole in my septum and my nose started to feel like it was hanging off my face. I then became a raw vegan shortly after the surgery, I've been raw foods vegan for 5 months now I've tried to stick to 100% raw as much as possible and sometimes I slip up due to not reading the ingredients on the packaging but I'm not hard on myself if I do slip. Anyway, I've started to notice something very strange the hole in my septum is closing up albeit very slowly but over the past couple of weeks its slowly been closing and my nasal drainage problems I was having are going away. I think that the raw food diet is responsible for this, so what I am basically trying to say is that if it healed my septum I have a feeling it will heal your bones and make them stronger.

I don't think this exists for humans yet, unfortunately - but what I think would be the healthiest mattress (and virtually free of dust-mites, even bed-bugs which inflict some homes recently) for humans would be the same as the healthiest for pets...
