Give it to me Raw

So, I am curious. Have any of you experienced hair loss or bad thinning of your hair after going high raw or 100% raw. I started having that problem and I am eating more cooked foods again because I am wondering if I was not eating enough or not getting a nutrient I needed. I am wanting to go mostly raw again, but im scared to. I have been to the doctor and I do not have blood sugar problems or anything else. I am a healthy fat chick. lol. They are running some tests right now for b12 and some other vitamins/nutrients stuff and I should know soon. Im really really hoping that I am not going through the thinning stage that alot of women get when they get older. My hair line is going farther and farther back, forhead seems to be getting larger. :( Any help.. any experience? I am now taking Super Primrose capsules everyday.. 1300 mg, I am taking a multi vitamin.. One n only is the name by Pure Essense lab.. and I take a teaspoon and a half of msm powerder everyday. My doctor was worried that the msm might be causing it. IDK

John,

Thank you for posting your friends blog so we can all read her account of what happened.
I think we can both agree that it gives us a clearer understanding of the situation, her thoughts and conclusions on the matter of both 80-10-10 and other diets where some people have some hair loss.

Referring to you original post that fueled this discussion.

She paid to have Doug Graham consult her about this and his response was: "Wear a wig. Wear your baldness proudly." Can you believe it? No compassion and no suggestions as to why it was happening or how stop it from happening!

As you can see your paragraph is quite loaded, inaccurate and incomplete based on what is on your friends blog. Besides the accuracy you do attack Dr. Graham by accusing him of having no compassion.

I would and still question your intent behind posting what you did had you not had something against 80-10-10 or Dr. Graham and didn’t have some kind of agenda.

On a forum where all we have to go on is words, I think we can both agree that it is crucial that we ensure, to the best of our ability, those words be accurate, as to not confuse our fellow raw friends who read our posts. I think you have done this now, so thank you.

I wish you the best of luck on your raw journey.

I noticed the same thing when I went raw. I had some test done and the lab results showed that I was lvery ow in protein, fat and Vitamin D. I did lose about 25lbs in about a year and was doing mainly green smoothies and fruits, I wouldn't say 80-10-10. I don't think I was getting the 10% of fat or protein. Now, I've started adding Spirulina, Chorella, hemp seeds and goji berries to my smoothies. I've also been taking a flax seed oil very morning. I now notice a few strands of loose hair in the shower, but nothing out of the norm. I also think that Coconut oil is a good idea as previously suggested by Aishwarya. I'm definitely going to try it out. Good luck on your journey:)

I really understand your concern. I also noticed some hair loss when first going raw. I was concerned at the time but I was also paying a lot more attention to my body and it's functions and noticed things that may have been going on before that I just wasn't aware of. I've heard it from many many people who first go raw and are adjusting, so you are definitely not alone.

When you clean up your diet your body does all it can to repair any previous lifestyle damages that may have occurred. Hair falling out and re-growing back are common and in my opinion getting rid of the old to make way for the new :)

All the best you in your raw journey Colleen.

Hair loss is, in my experience, is usually related to adrenal fatigue or low thyroid function. It's true that changing your diet drastically can stress these glands out and many people do require extra protein for their endocrine glands to function properly.
I used to lose a lot of hair due to these imbalances (ESP thyroid imbalance!!). The things that helped me the most were supporting those glands with herbal formulas (esp containing the herb He Sho Wu) and a formula called ThyroCare) and eggs have been very helpful (and protein in general).

Regardless of what some say, we don't "detox" our hair! It falls out because some other organ or gland is suffering/stressed and our body's priority is to send nutrients to that organ and our hair is last on the list.
There are healing systems that are thousands of years old that know exactly what physical symptom is linked to what organ/gland and the head hair is linked to the kidney/adrenal meridian, which controls the entire endocrine system.

That thinning stage women go through is directly related to their endocrine function (which affects their hormones). It's not just part of life and their is a lot you can do about it:) You can PM me if you need more info on the subject:)

Is your shampoo free of SLS? That ingredient actually destroys hair folicles. Google "the dangers of sodium lauryl sulfate".
It says "may cause hairloss by attacking the hair follicle'. Scary stuff! Good luck!

Hmmm.. did NOT know this.. im off now to check to see if my shampoo has it.

Just had a skim through the replies to date...

I've heard lots of people complain about hair falling out on various raw food diets, that is, not just 80/10/10, but low-fruit, Hippocrates-style raw food diets as well.

I'm not completely sure of the explanation for this, but it's certainly not specific to high-fruit diets.

And I'm not sure that 'raw food' in itself can be blamed either, else we'd all find it to be the case, wouldn't we? Coming up to three years raw, I've had no loss of hair. High-fruit. No eggs for three years either.

It's an interesting subject, but think we all need to be wary of implying that any particular variant of the raw food causes hair loss, or indeed any food subsequently re-introduced into the diet stops it.

If raw food causes hair to fall out initially, and then it stops falling out, whilst the diet is still raw, I think it must be related to detoxing. Failing that, it could be caused by something toxic in a 'high-raw' diet.

Colleen, there is no logic for thinking that eating cooked food (damaged) food will be better for you than eating raw. You will not get more nutrients that way - you will get fewer.

I am concerned about your intake of MSM. Whilst I couldn't say whether I agree with your doctor that this is the 'cause' of your hair loss, I definitely don't recommend you don't put this into your body.

Please see my article here, which includes a couple of sections dealing with this powder.

PS Re MSM - you will see hundreds of articles on the internet extolling its virtues (yes, even for 'hair loss') and saying it is not harmful. I am one of the small minority that thinks otherwise.

I love MSM. It has helped me tremendously.

If hair is being pinched off, seems likely that something else is being pinched off somewhere else.

Are you able to green juice? Would a couple weeks of really clean, clearing, cleansing foods work? And you don't have to put the cooked food completely aside, but you should "track" your hair while staying clean and maybe gear up for a cleanse.

I just finished up another liver flush (excellent results) and my hair really did change over two days. Less greasy, stronger and more viable. Noticeably.
