Give it to me Raw

So, I am curious. Have any of you experienced hair loss or bad thinning of your hair after going high raw or 100% raw. I started having that problem and I am eating more cooked foods again because I am wondering if I was not eating enough or not getting a nutrient I needed. I am wanting to go mostly raw again, but im scared to. I have been to the doctor and I do not have blood sugar problems or anything else. I am a healthy fat chick. lol. They are running some tests right now for b12 and some other vitamins/nutrients stuff and I should know soon. Im really really hoping that I am not going through the thinning stage that alot of women get when they get older. My hair line is going farther and farther back, forhead seems to be getting larger. :( Any help.. any experience? I am now taking Super Primrose capsules everyday.. 1300 mg, I am taking a multi vitamin.. One n only is the name by Pure Essense lab.. and I take a teaspoon and a half of msm powerder everyday. My doctor was worried that the msm might be causing it. IDK

I believe Doug was teaching the concept for quite awhile before the book was published and I thought I remember Mike saying that he knows or at least has consulted with Doug.

80-10-10 is an offshoot of Natural Hygiene which has been around since the 30's.

1) 80-10-10 uses some similar teachings to that of NH, yes.

2) Natural Hygiene (NH) has been around a long time. I will agree with you there.

3) While the two are correlated they are not one in the same by any means. If you study traditional NH you will find that the various NH teachers rarely agree on what they recommend for caloronutrient ratios and don't even recommend all raw or vegan for that matter.

The 80-10-10 concept has no reference in any literature other than that of Dr. Grahams, certainly not before the release of his book in 2006.

Whew! I was bracing for another big 811 fight.

Low fat fruitatarianism has been around for a long time.

I'm sure it has, but not sure how this is relevant. 80-10-10 isn't fruitarianism nor does Dr. Graham advocate fruitarianism. It clearly says so in his book (pg. 26).

Guys, there is a lot of misinformation being presented by people here about what the 80-10-10 diet is. As someone who has worked with Dr. Graham and has been successful in incorporating 80-10-10 into their lifestyle I would like to help people who want to learn more about it. I hope that you can understand that my intention is to help people get accurate information about 80-10-10.

I would hope you would want to help support others who would like to give 80-10-10 a shot.

Well, technically a fruitatarian would be 801010 by macro profile. I realize that Dr. Graham says that you can have avocado or nuts or whatever as long as the fat does not exceed 10%. I've read his website extensively, but unfortunately no public library in my state seems to carry his book and I don't make enough money to spare on books.

First question on his FAQ
"I'm getting the idea that this 80-10-10 diet is pretty much a fruitarian diet. Is that a pretty good evaluation? Depends what you mean. By calories, yes, by volume, maybe. The guideline is "fruit during the day, and a LARGE salad for dinner"

I think Graham has a lot of good info on his site, even though I obviously don't agree with all of it as a scientist or I'd follow his diet. I don't agree with most of the raw gurus though.

Yes, Dr. Graham goes in to much more detail explaining the diet in his book.
The website is a good start but it's difficult to get enough information to really get a grasp of what 80-10-10 is from a few paragraphs on the website.

I don't agree with most of the raw food gurus either. I almost quit my previous raw diet after a year on it because I wasn't getting the results I wanted. Just by luck I came across the book, read it and never looked back because it worked so well. It's worked wonders for me for the last 3 years and my family has started implementing it into their lives as well.

What kind of scientist are you? I've never met an actual scientist before. I'm totally open to skepticism. Heck I question everything. If you want to chat sometime I'd love to hear your thoughts from a scientific point of view regarding the diet. Maybe we can learn something from each other.

I've primarily studied trees, not people, but I've certainly learned a lot that applies to both. I think it all comes down to a tension that is currently going on in the mainstream nutrition community too: how much fat is OK to consume? I feel like...well, it depends on the fat. On his site at least, Graham doesn't seem to recognize that. He says fat clog the blood and prevent insulin from working. Well...some fats do, and I don't eat much of those, but I've done a lot of research on the matter and I consume fats like lauric acid and DHA(this one is very good for the blood) ad libetum. It can be very frustrating talking with some 801010s because they just quote Graham and don't do their own research. The body uses some fats, for example, just as easily as it uses sugars for energy....sugar isn't a perfect energy, because there is no such thing.

But in the end, he's been good to learn about 811 because I've been like "wait...that can't be true!" but when I researched a lot of the stuff, it inspired me to not consume a lot of crap like powders and rancid fats. The amount of omega-6 (too much of this fat def cause inflammation)loaded rancid nuts consumed in raw recipes is a little scary and when I consumed a diet of these things I felt crappy. It's great that the 801010 diet is getting people like you to be successful in their dietary goals!
Mellifera, and anybody else who is interested in the science behind fats, how they work in the body, which fats are healthy and proper omega 3+6 ratios can watch the following video. I found it very interesting and informative.

The presentation is given by Dr. Rick Dina.

He talks about DHA and the various important fats and their roles in the body and where to get them from food if you eat animals or if you are vegan or vegetarian.

Hi Mell,

Two ?'s if I may: are there raw gurus (rawgurus) that you like

2) Do you know how to test for nut rancidity? I heard that if nuts/seeds float it can indicate one way or the other. Thanks!

Guess I'm too headstrong for gurus. Maybe it's the same reason I have trouble with religion too. I enjoy listening to Daniel Vitalis though. He has some interesting info...they all do really. I kind of pick and chose. I'm the Unitarian Universalist of raw.

I don't know about about the floating. I do know that it can be difficult to tell because some turn slowly. By the time you can taste it, it may have been rancid for awhile. But some people have never had fresh nuts and can't even tell at that point. I was at a friend's house a few days ago and they were baking with some walnuts and complaining how they are so bitter when raw. I tasted one and it was way rancid...

I had a lot of stomach problems on gourmet raw and I blame the rancidity. I won't buy shelled nuts if they have been stored in a clear container at room temp. I look for those in opaque containers, at least, and those that indicate the date of harvest. Or I just buy em in shell from localharvest.org or other farm sources. Of course it's cut my consumption of them down a lot, but I've replaced em with coconut, which almost never goes rancid.

I took a tasting class in IDing mold flavors and can taste mold on most brazil nuts I've had and in some cashews. Molds are everywhere, even on us and small amounts don't hurt, but if I can taste it...that can't be good. I've never found an almond with that problem though. A good thing about shelled nuts is that you can tell if there is a mold problem before you put it into your mouth...they will look moldy.

I've met some hit chix on GITMR. Not satisfying in the least. Just the opposite. Most communication is self-defeating, accomplishes nothing. I would love it if people would leave me alone when I'm out and about. Anybody else?
