For every hen laying eggs, there is a male chick that is killed, caged eggs, free range eggs, barn laid eggs, organic eggs, backyard eggs, doesn't matter.
I just want you to watch it, that's all. I'm honestly not trying to cause a shite fight. I'd just like to make sure that people are honest with themselves. If you do eat eggs, please don't avoid this video.
For those that don't eat eggs, you may not want to bother, it might be too much.
The place i get eggs from doesn't have any roosters... they only buy sexed females. You can also have backyard hens that lay without roosters.... (unfertilized eggs)
Guys, seriously. Please have a think about why there are no roosters where you get your eggs from. Where do the roosters go? Fertilised hen's eggs are generally 50% male 50% female. Where do all these male chicks go when they get born?
Every back yard hen is bred somewhere, and the breeders don't keep the roosters they hatch. What do they do with them? Why don't we know what they do with them?
And no, organic free range chicks may not be killed in this way, but how are they killed? Is it ok to kill them so we can eat eggs? Hens who lay organic eggs are still mass bred. 50% male chicks 50% female chicks.
My brother has egg laying hens and of course there is only 1 rooster in the yard but he gets lots of eggs each day with no killing involved. But I have no real answer to your question. I love eggs but would never eat them from a place like in that video... very disturbing.
What happens when his hens die? Where does he get new hens? Where are these hens bred? What happens to the male chicks that are bred alongside the female chickens?
I guess my point is that somewhere along the way, death of 'useless' chicks happens. And it happens on a regular basis, as backyard hens are constantly replaced.
These are the questions that nobody's thought to ask, nobody really cares. For me these questions made me query my own compassion, my drive to be a truly compassionate person.
For me, out of sight isn't out of mind, I can't seem to think that way.
Maybe I'm in the minority. I strive to be a citizen of the sort of future society I hope so much to be a part of. This is part of that striving.
uhhh... there are no roosters around cause the eggs aren't fertilized. Hens can lay eggs without having sex. Those eggs have no life (baby chicks in them)
my neighbors would get new hens as gifts from other friends/ neighborhood folk that raised backyard chickens... we lived near a farm coop that sold baby roosters and chicks, and they didn't kill any of them.. they were sold to local folks.
for every hen laying eggs, there is a male chick that is killed is not a correct statement. commercial egg laying operations raising leghorn and highland 55's do this. all other hatcheries of heavy breed chickens are seperated into laying hens and meat production (both male and female) chickens. hatcheries would be unable to compete, if they incubated and killed off half of their efforts. even those that do what the clip shows, sell those ground up baby chicks for pet and cattle feed.
i am not defending or stating what they do is right. people don't need to eat animals or animal products for any health reasons (imo). but by all the fast food chicken places and those isles of meat across the back of supermarkets in this country, i guess most standard american eaters disagree with me.
but i am also against lies and disinformation that others spread. when people are trying to think through emotional and moral issues, it doesn't help them to uncover incorrect information that was spread to 'tug at their heartstrings". i don't know what the answers are (yet) on these issues, but, i do know speading incorrect information is not helpful. truth sets people free. dishonesty (lies) make them wonder why the 'bucket won't hold water'.
I'm ok with animals dying for me to live. (BTW: I eat only minimal animal products) In nature, animals are killing and eating each other left and right. Heck, my cat actually takes no pity on the mice she eats. I always think it looks like she is torturing the poor mouse....but it seems to be natural for her to bat it around and knock it senseless before biting it to pieces. Painful to watch for a compassionate human, but it's real and I feel I have to witness it and not "save" the mouse for my idea of what "right" is.
However, needless suffering of any creature is a problem for me. If I know something I'm eating suffered in the process of creating my food, I'll find another source.
I choose to function in this world. I have needs and I will meet them as well as I can. I choose to not live in guilt. I know the damage I create and I accept it but try to reduce and minimize it as much as possible. I don't carry the burden or weight of the source of the significant cause of suffering in this world which of course is mindless consumption and industrial food production.

i'm ok with you having these feelings and (unethical?) moral values! b/c i can read from your posts and profile, that your opinions and (moral) values 'might' be open to change because you realize you are 'nearsighted' and seem to be somewhat open minded. so, let me lay this fact on you: eating a fertilized egg (raw or cooked), is eating an aborted baby chick. this viable life form would have been a male or female (10% - 15% possibly gay), if allowed to incubate. also, there is a 5% + or - error that this egg was not fertilized.

i am reasonnably sure with the knowledge of this fact, that you will cease (if you haven't already) the eating of raw, or cooked, fertilized eggs, knowing it is the aborted 'little chick' of henny penny and the little rooster that 'could', b/c he wasn't killed off by (big) industrial food production.
I need a mango now more than ever.
This year has been the worst mango season I've ever seen :( Honey mangos were sad with light colored flesh that held little flavor...Kent mangos...don't even make me go there.
