There are still people who practice the original teachings of John the Baptist, they have been around for thousands of years and John was just one of their prophets. These people are the origianl Essenes and they are called Maneans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandaeism).
They have lived in Iraq until this latest war, as have other small origianl pre and post Christian religious groups, all are now struggling to survive.
