Give it to me Raw

Hello all,

I am trying to find someone with similar experience to mine with eating fruit (it makes me dead tired). And maybe with some good solutions.

First the background. I started to changing my diet seven years ago, first cutting out all the sodas, cakes, snacks etc., then changed to vegetarian diet five years ago. Since I read about health and diet all the time I soon came across with the raw food diet concept. I decided for slow shift to raw diet, first replacing breakfast with fruit, then the dinner etc.

Two years ago for the new year eve I decided to go raw. I basically followed the 811 diet, with lots of fruit all the time. And I was 100% raw for months. I lost a lot of weight, went through some emotional cleaning, had my ups and downs. Felt very light, illuminated, balanced etc. But then the problems started. Basically now seems like going raw lead to burn out.

I started to feel tired and drained all the time. It became impossible for me to follow the raw diet. So after one year being on raw I started to eat cooked food again. But only lunch and strictly vegan diet. I felt a little better, but still far from being full of energy. I decided to test my blood and it showed up that I had critically low levels of vitamin B12 and D. I bought the supplements and started to consume them every day. I felt a little bit better, but still I had very low energy. And I felt totally strange, taking two pills every day. That is not picture of a healthy person. So somehow I also decided to stop my vegan diet and eat small quantities of diary every day. Not separately, but I did not mind if there was some diary in the food I ate for lunch. I felt a little bit better, but still a lot of ups and downs.

Then I had the following experience. Since I travel a lot for business there was an occasion when I could not buy fruit for few days. Of course I thought I was going to die without fruit for the whole two days. But actually I felt better on the physical level. It seemed like I had much more physical energy. But still when I got back home, that experience did not matter to me, since I was totally convinced that fruit is the perfect food.

Still lacking of energy, I tried everything, from adding green smoothies, low fat, high fat diet, mono meals, mixing fats and carbs, adding the calories, etc. Nothing really worked. Then I listened to Tony Robbins audio books and in one of them he is promoting Fit for Life diet style with lots of fruit. But in one of his next programs he says he was dead wrong about that. In this program he says that fruit made him totally tired and that for several years he had no physical energy and had to do everything with his mind power. And I must say I am having the similar experience. Now he is promoting ph miracle diet by Robert Young.

But that is quite a big mind shift. Still I believe that fruit is the perfect food. The whole 811 theory makes sense (where our ancestors lived, why we are attracted to sweet etc.). Nevertheless it does not work for me at all as it did not for Tony Robins I guess. There are several things I do not like about ph miracle diet, specially taking all the supplements. And Robert Young is the only one I found that claims fruit is acidic food. I also have the feeling that Tony is a little bit kept back on his opinion about fruit. Maybe he did not figure it out yet why it makes him tired (like I did not yet). And I guess Dr Young's solution works for him.

But still as I mentioned I have big logical problems with believing in ph Miricle. The diet consist mainly eating veggies, nuts and oils, with some fish and legumes. So where do you get calories from - only avocado, olives, nuts and seeds? It doesn't make any sens. On the other hand it is also almost impossible to follow it if you do not have your own chef or a lot of time to prepare your meals. On the top of it all I am allergic to nuts and legumes are not doing good for my digestion (I figure that out from listening to my body). So I am left only with veggies - and no calories. I suppose I would feel even more tired.

Well, I identified some potential causes of my energy problem.
- I am workaholic and really work a lot. Since cooked food and diary is a big stimulant I just need it for working days and nights. And fruit has a big cleansing effect.
- I am also not emotionally very positive and sangvinic person, more philosophical one. So maybe you have to be really really emotionally in balance to be on raw diet.
-Maybe you have to be in the right warm and sunny atmosphere, here is 1/2 year really cold. That probably explains lack of vitamin D.
- Candida may be also the problem. Some say that sugar also fructoses can cause yeast to burst.

Now I am not sure what to do. I can not go on like that, because without physical energy life is just one big struggle. And definitely eating too much fruit contributes to crashing my body again and again. You can say it is cleaning crises, but I can not wait for few years to past that phase. On the other hand I am not sure about eating only veggies. Meat is no option and diary, grains and legumes really are highly acidic.

And by the way, the discipline is no problem for me. I can eat whatever I decide too, but still all the shifts for me are quite stress for the body, so I try to be very careful. Did maybe any of you faced the similar problem and found a good solution that is not based on pills and powders?

Thanks for you answer!

See Blaz (cool name) What happens is when you get in great moods on a consistant basis you start attracting the foods and things that will strengthen you personally. See we are all unique and what works for me might not work for you food wise but you start getting in good moods and you will be given evidence very quickly that you are on the right track.

As an 811 advocate and ex-chronic fatigue sufferer I can tell you what works for me and some insights I have had following this lifestyle and really making it work (if that is what you want to do).

Maybe it's not the food. There a a ton of lifestyle factors that can contribute to excellent or poor health.

How much do you sleep per night? - 9-10 hours works best for me to be fully recharged. I was used to sleeping less on cooked but I was also less active. This took some time to figure out. A 1/2 hr nap in the afternoon works wonders for my energy levels.

Do you exercise regularly? This is one thing I have found to be essential to feeling great every day. I only exercise on the days I want to eat. So yes that's everyday. Some days it's light exercise but I've found it's essential to get out and move even if it's a fast walk.

You do mention some other potential factors of your energy issue. The first three, if not looked after will leave you feeling pretty drained on any diet.

There are some things that I have experienced while following 811 that will most likely inevitably cause fatigue.

1) Not eating enough calories
2) Not sleeping enough (8-10 hrs recommended) - lots more if you are suffering from chronic fatigue
3) Not eating enough green leafy vegetables (spinach, lettuce, celery are my mainstays right now)
4) Negative emotions, stress (work, relationship), no sense of purpose in life, not happy at work
5) Poor food combinations (fruit and fat in the same meal or too much fat in the diet while eating lots of fruit)

Some other info would help:

How long have you been following 811?
Have you read the book?
What does a days meal plan look like for you?
Sleep?

Kim and Can,

thanks for the reply and advices.

Kim, I agree that the positive emotional level is definitely very important. But it is all connected, low energy, not enough socializing, bad mood etc. I am trying every day to be as positive as possible but if i do not have energy is quite tough, specially on the days when I have big challenges. Thanks, I will try to be as positive as possible.

Can, thanks for all the advices.
1) I am experimenting with calories, but I am looking for the balance. I gain weight (fat) very quickly, so I am very careful with the amount of calories evey day.
2) I sleep enough, 9 - 10 hours per day for past two years. That was quite a surprise, since most of people on raw say that they sleep less than they used to.
3) That definitely could be the problem. I do not have time to prepare the meals so not eating enough green veggies could definitely be the problem.
4) Stress could be the problem.
5) About the fat I am not sure, since I eat only healthy fats. I eat like 2 avocados per week, 2 fists of almonds, 10 - 20 olives and olive oil on the salad. I mix fats and sugar only in one smoothie (avocado, bananas, nuts) I eat twice per week. But I add more fats few months ago, since I hoped it will help with my energy level. It was no difference. Before that I ate only olive oil on my salads and few nuts.

Unfortunately I never read the book 811, just what I have found on the internet. But I read few books on natural hygiene, which I suppose is pretty similar.

My most common meal plan:
Breakfast: 1/2 L of orange juice, 2 - 3 pieces of fruit
Snack: 2 - 3 pieces of fruit
Lunch: Veggie soup, salad (at the moment also some cocked food mainly grains)
Snack: 2 - 3 pieces of fruit or fruit smoothie or dry fruit
Dinner: 5 pieces of fruit or olives or smoothie (avocado, 2 bananas, almonds)

Now I am trying to drink 1/2 L of wheat grass juice every day. I will see if it helps, but my stomach doesn't like it really very much.

Maybe raw diet just is not for my life style. I will probably try vegan diet, with little diary, much veggies and little fruit.

Thanks for everything!

Hey Blaz,

I struggled with lots of fruit when I was still eating nuts and oils regularly. Didn't help my energy levels either. I might have an avocado once a week. Other than that no nuts, no oils. Just lots of whole fruit and veg.

I tried wheatgrass a few time and my first reflex was to gag when I had my first shot. Tummy didn't like it either. Sure sign to stay away.

811 is different from Natural hygiene books. If you are at all interested in enjoying lots fruits and veggies as the main part of your diet then I would highly recommend it. If you lived close to me I would lend you mine :)

Good luck on your journey.
