Give it to me Raw

There seems to be a lot of discussion about all of the things you shouldn't use because they've been heated past the recommended temperature. And there's not a lot of agreement on it - one persons OK is another persons no-no.

Is there a nutrition based reason for avoiding any of these if they are not core parts of my diet.

For example if I make, say, a shredded/blended salad and then splash on a bit of soy sauce does that compromise the meal or damage it's nutritive qualities or does it just not add to them?

Please understand that: 1) I'm just referring to condiments/seasonings/flavourings, not the major ingredients, and 2) if it just means that my "100% Raw" badge will be confiscated by the Raw Police I can't say I'd really give a stuff! I see going raw as a lifestyle choice, not a religion.

No dressing do not ruin all the good stuff you got going on in the salad. Obviously an unhealthy dressing like ranch or blue cheese will not be good for you but better to have it on a salad than a fried chicken burger.

Sorry, I didn't literally mean I was planning on using soy sauce - I was just using an example that I knew was on most dead food lists.

I've not seen Nama Shoyu here in New Zealand ( along with lots of raw foodists specialties like cacao, dulse, etc.)

As for Nori sheets I have no idea if any of those here are raw - most of the writing on the packs is in one Asian language or another, as are the people in the shops. So no help in translating. Ever asked an Asian shop assistant: "Is this raw?" lol

Thanks for the reassuring replies!

i agree. small amounts of cooked food won't compromise all the good salad and raw food does so go for it! if you can't get nama shoyu you can get tamari which is wheat free and lower in salt. or use unpasteurized miso. ANYBODY CAN BENEFIT FROM SIMPLY INCREASING THE PORTION OF RAW FOOD IN THEIR DIET. and don't let people discourage you with complete puritan a dogmatism. take it all in steps and remember you don't have to go raw overnight. :)

if you're mostly raw, don't sweat the small stuff. but yeah, nama shoyu and dulse flakes = raw and way tastier.

that. is. all.

I find a big diff between 99% and 100%, but there is no "wrong".

100% raw ripe fruits and greens. no nuts, no oils, no dehydrates, no condiments needed, no questions about whether it's raw or not...i feel like i felt like i should have when eating mostly raw plus some of that stuff i listed (i.e. "gourmet" raw).

again tho, there is no "wrong". do what you feel :)

This is a little confusing - are you saying that nuts and oils don't qualify as raw? Cold pressed oils? Unshelled nuts from the trees?

Or is there another criteria apart from just raw?

I haven't yet worked out why some people have got it in for onions and garlic (a wonder food I've always heard!) even when raw. And they're OK with spring onions (shallots) but not normal ones.

For the record, I think garlic and onions are fine if you like them and they don't cause any stomach upset. Purists disagree, but I'm not a purist and very happy not to be.

I think the smartest approach is to listen to all the opinions (yes, they are only opinions) and try the things that appeal most to you. As you experiment you will develop your own rules.

Keep an open mind and have fun finding your way.

I eat a little fresh garlic and fresh spices at times too. Sometimes, I just don't crave them for the longest time. I look at them as a herb and once in a while thing now. In the beginning I had lot's and lot's of fresh garlic and fresh spices, I feel it is some kind of healing process and maybe a cleansing thing. Almost everyone I know did it in the beginning.

Now, I just don't crave them that much and eat very, very, very simply.

yeah...me too. I sometimes crave a bit of garlic either straight up (a local farmer is a garlic freak and grows 24 varieties....some are darn good raw and its not challenging to eat a whole raw clove just plain) or blended into a savory smoothie or soup etc.

could it be the selenium? garlic is rich in selenium.....hmmmmm......

some people are not following a "guru", only their inner wisdom, which happens to fall in line with some of the ideas put out their by the outspoken folks of the raw food movement...

i agree that it's best to do what you feel and not judge others for what they do and do not eat.

Why is it that everything you say PLA, makes me smile and nod like you are reading my mind? (are you reading my mind?) lol......

you are my sister.

I don't have easy access to unshelled nuts from the tree so I never eat them. Many nuts/seeds packaged and bought at the store are rancid. I suppose if you can sprout em that would mean there is some life in em, but I find that they slow my digestion and I get a UTI when I eat em. That's me though.

I like the idea of only eating things that taste good by themselves, that I'm naturally drawn to. I wouldn't dig eating garlic alone, nor onions (though my mom eats onions alone, loves em!).

I find that I feel the absolute best eating lots of fresh ripe fruit and greens (i love romaine all my itself).
