Give it to me Raw

Lately I've been craving chocolate and salt (not together of course). The only food that satisfies my salt craving is seaweed. I eat 1-7 sheets of nori every day to satiate this craving. I also crave dark chocolate on a daily basis. A Pure Chocolate Brownie bar usually helps. Both of these cravings were sudden and intense and I've been having them daily for a couple of weeks now. Does anyone else crave these foods? Or have any thoughts on what could be missing from my diet?

Thanks!
Eden

Well chocolate craving could either be antioxidants or something sweet, and seaweed - again antioxidants or salt. Maybe your body needs to be detoxed?

Well actually, these cravings started soon after I finished a week long detoxing period. I know the chocolate craving isn't for something sweet because I don't crave any fruit I happen to have, just specifically chocolate. And seaweed seems to be the only thing that satisfies the salt craving. Before I tried seaweed, I would sprinkle more and more salt onto my salads/soups/whatever until they tasted too salty. And that still wouldn't satisfy my cravings. Seaweed seems to be the only food that satiates my salt cravings.

Thanks!

Minerals!! Both cacao and seaweeds are really high in minerals

most people crave chocolate when they are low in magnesium..... i definitely did! if you are craving seaweed then you also may need more iodine in your diet.

Hehe, I recently went through a similar thing with seaweed, I was eating tons of it! I listen to my body and just give it the food till it stops asking for it.

I do get this with cacao sometimes, but I eat that mainly because my head tells me it's yummy.

Wow, me too! I've been eating about 7 to 10 sheets a day for the past 3 days or so and its starting to weird me out a bit.

I started eating more nori when I doubled the amount of greens in my diet and cut back on the fats. That coupled with the extra greens caused me to become dehydrated from WAY too much fiber and, I think, too much salt (from the seaweed and nama shoyu). Have you had any signs of dehydration?

I started straining some of the fiber out of my smoothies to make green juice and already in one day I've seen a pretty decent change.

How do you usually eat your nori? I love mine wrapped around huge chunks of cucumber with bean spouts and avocado or sometimes a ginger almond paste. Oh yea, and I'm not stingy with the nama shoyu.

Hey Toya (cool name btw!)

I haven't had any signs of dehydration as I drink loads of water and tea and lemonade sweetened with stevia every day. And I tend to eat my seaweed right out of the bag! Although sometimes I actually make nori rolls.

The sea veg craving:

Eden, I had a craving for sea veg (particularly nori) for around six weeks after significantly reducing the sodium chloride in my diet.

It is GOOD to reduce sodium chloride (even better to take it out of your diet altogether).

However, when we do significantly reduce it, the body can take a little while to adjust to the reduced intake. Because it's had sodium and potassium in just the right balance, when one is reduced, there is a short period in which it will set up a craving for the one that's reduced. You might also experience leg cramps, very dry mouth etc.

Sea vegetables, containing natural sodium, are one way of riding through this adjustment period, although do make sure they're well-rinsed of any sodium chloride on the ouside. Also look for other raw foods containing lots of sodium, eg celery, carrots, coconut water, canteloupe and honeydew melons.

Eventually your seaweed cravings will go, and, instead of tasting amazing to you, as they do now, they will taste so-so.

The chocolate:

I suggest you're craving it for it's stimulant properties, whether you are consciously aware of them or not. Some will say your body is wanting the magnesium, but I'd say the first explanation is more likely (you can get plenty of magnesium in nuts, seeds, sprouted pulses etc.)

Raw or cooked, I'm of the school that says chocolate is toxic (although...yes, I eat it sometimes!). When you eat it you will feel a slight 'buzz'' as your body goes 'all systems go' in an effort to eliminate the invading toxins. My recommendation is, if you feel you don't want to cut it out right now, at least halve the amount and gradually wean yourself either off it altogether or to 'just occasionally'.

that could also be true. For me it was the magnesium... i was going crazy for chocolate... and then found out i was severely deficient! Women lose magnesium around their menstrual cycle, that's why they crave chocolate more then. WHen i started supplementing with magnesium, the cravings totally stopped

If you crave seaweed, you know you are on the right path.

I always crave seaweed / sea vegetables. It is one of the best foods on earth.

If you do not crave sea veggies, there is something wrong! ;)

A meal is not complete without sea veggies.

I eat cacao and sea veggies together. I sometimes make Ann Wigmore Energy Soup with a little cacao and sea veggies in the soup. Energy Soup is very nutritious, I eat it a few times a week.
