Give it to me Raw

Hi

I just have to ask this.. there has been a lot of talk on this site lately about people who feel they need to eat meat. If chia, quinoa, hemp, etc. are complete proteins why would someone need to eat meat?

I have asked about this kind of before thinking there must be something missing.. but if you can put a meal together that has complete proteins and other basics why would someone eat meat?

Is there just a magical process that occurs where the exact amount of protein from meat works and from plants\seeds doesn't work or do you think it is more psychological? The other thing I am wondering is did people who eat meat really try to get a decent amount of protein from powders or hemp etc before they went back to meat or did they go from fruit and salads back to meat?

Also were you supplementing b-complex before you went back to meat.It seems like a person has to really focus on getting 50 grams of protein a day when vegetarian. A lot of people are unwilling to do this because they think it means eating a cup of sesame seeds or other seeds and nuts- but a person can get an almost no fat protein source from sprouted garbanzos, mung beans etc. Is it the tast of the sprouted beans and other high protein foods that turns you off- or is it more the fact that you just don't feel like you get energy from sprouted beans or quinoa, or hemp etc?

Thank you! I really want to get to the bottom of this..

I think people who eat kelp, nutritional yeast, and fermented foods are less likely to have that problem.. My package of kelp says it has 15% b12 per tbs.

I have 2 friends, 1 of whom was raised vegan and 1 vegetarian, both from birth, and have never in their life felt the need to eat meat. They simply have never eaten it, so don't even think about it. As far as I know they have no health problems.

Perhaps the desire to eat meat comes from it being around all the time, and also having eaten it before has that element of nostalgia, like an addiction to something that was quelled.

I bet that's true. I had NO desire to start eating it again (I wasn't around it much and I have much better memories of bread than meat. I'd choose a bisuit over a burger anyday;-)
I never felt addicted to it. I dropped it overnight when i was 16 and didn't look back, never craved it, etc.

I feel like vegans and vegetarians (and I know because I was like this too!) make a lot of excuses and assumptions about why people feel they need meat (like, "they're addicted" or "they're brainwashed", etc.), and now I've had to eat my own words, because I am none of those things, LOL!

As a child I never really enjoyed meat, but mom couldn't be swayed, so I ate the average American amount. I vegged out in my early 20s after reading Diet for a New America (immediately after reading chapter 3.....cold turkey (erm tofurkey...)

Now, although I eat very little animal protein and I've been a "no mammal flesh" vegetarian for about 20 years, I do think about the mechanics of assimilating meat. The more I read and experiment the less "knee jerk" reaction I have against eating animals. I sure don't crave meat at all. Intellectually though, I'm opening to the idea and I could see myself experimenting with very specific animal products in the future.

It's rather freeing to know both sides of the debate and realize each has good points. I feel empowered to make choices now without the heavy burden of belonging to a group. Only knowledge and desire for healthy balance guide me now....not guilt.

Thanks Nicole. It's actually not easy to talk about because I know it's not well accepted here.

I thought that was what this whole site was about. A social network. People sharing their personal experiences and hopefully helping someone else by sharing that experience. ;-)
I'm sure there are people out there who would be shocked to hear some of the stuff I have experienced....but that's a whole other forum *haha*

It's actually surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. No machete required. Shave off the husk at the pointed top close to the shell. Then poke the point of a knife in about 2 or 3 cm out from the centre and wiggle it about until it pierces ...
