The cherries have come in season.
I got some and it seems like I can not eat enough of them. I just keep shoveling them in.
Is there something in them my body is needing and getting?
i have something to say about cherries. I bought some organic ones in the past and it turned out that they were all infested with maggots. Some were still alive and this is apparently a common problem. But this has put me off eating them. And I read that a whole crop can be ruined by maggots.
I just got some too. They are a cure for gouty arthritis. I was thinking of grinding and drying them because cherry powder is non existant and would be good to sprinkle in smoothies or tea for the anti-inflammatory effect. The fresh ones are awesome too! I was wondering if anyone had seen conventional or organic cherries with weird growths on them. I just saw some at a farm stand and they had a small thing coming out of the top like another cherry- but it looked kind of disturbing. I was wondering if people sort cherries at farms and these were rejects or if there was something weird going on- like mutations from some kind of chemical.
Cherries and many other fruits get sorted at least once or twice if they're also being graded, sometimes by hand, sometimes by machine. This raises the price, and also usually eliminates the variety of appearances. AFAIK, it's completely normal for cherries to look that way.
My favorite store, sadly, has started bringing in the irradiated mangos from India, also irradiated lychees from Mexico. They all look exactly the same. Kindof scary :/
I grew up in the cherry capital of the world and I've really never come across cherries with growths! Maybe some with a small, brown, woody-looking vein on the outside, but not growths. My mom used to take my brother and I to the orchards in the summer and we'd pick buckets of black cherries and get really stained up with cherry juice;-)
