Give it to me Raw

hello friends,
please help. i am sick of being grossed out by the litter my cat, sadie, uses. we use a clay clumping one (tidycats) right now, but i'd like to move to something cleaner that's less rank and possibly more natural (i am unsure of the chemical content of ordinary cat litter). going outside is not an option, and i've tried to actually toilet train her before resulting in a massive failure.
so, what do you use, and how do you keep it tidy?
thanks for any help or at the very least commiseration.

Hi S,
I used to use one made out of lucerne (alfalfa) pellets. You could just compost it.
Plus it smelt lovely.
I got it in Australia, so don't know if it is available in your neck of the woods.
Love and peace XX.

I love the liter robot-It's $$$ but it's worth it, I swear. http://www.litter-robot.com/

For litter I use crystal litter it's a little more expensive than regular litter but it's awesome. I find that it really helps on cutting down the smell. http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-fl.... I hear Feline Pine is great as well but it doesn't work with the litter robot so I've never used it.

Also, the more raw cat food my cat eats the less smelly he is, I live in a small NYC apt, this is very important;)

Ha ha that litter robot looks ace! I wonder if I can get it in the UK... Doesn't the smell come out though without a flap?

I have two cats and normally one will go in a while after the other. I'm having a wee chuckle thinking about the machine starting to turn when one is in it :)

Nope, the top rotates and drops the kitty waste in the basket below so you never have to touch or scoop it.

This is awesome litter!!!! One of my cats doesn't like it all that well though, but the other two are perfectly fine. But. its the best I have found so far

Is the cat Raw? Raw cat poo smells less and is smaller also, less waste. I'm mean Raw Meat of course, cats are carnivores.

I was just watching a program on this, this morning. They were saying clay based cat litters, which have sodium bentonite (in clay), can be very harmful if your cat ingests it. This can happen when cats clean their paws after using litter box. The bentonite forms a huge mass in their stomach.
They suggeted using a wheat or corn based litter. Much more healthy for your cat and the earth :)

WHOA! thanks for all the help, people!
i love the litter robot, but we can't hook it up to the systems in our apartment, so i'm afraid just getting a different litter will have to do for now. i will definitely check out the wheat and corn and alfalfa litters and then decide.
the problem isn't the poop; i can handle that. it's the piss that smells the worst! she hasn't transitioned to raw, but i'm worried that i might not be able to afford that at this stage in my life. i have to do some more investigation about that, though.
thanks again!

Hi S,
I tried several kinds of more natural kitty litter and the lucerne one was best, regarding odour.

Hello fellow cat lover,

I use recycled wood pellets. I was told by a vet not to use the clay stuff as if it clumps in the tray when it gets wet, it clumps in their tummies when they lick the dust off their paws and fur. It doesn't really smell bad much - the pine from the wood tends to mask it. I've also always read that you can't compost cat litter - I think cat poo can carry a lot of toxins and it's not a good idea to be planting stuff in it that you might then eat or even handling compost made from cat poo carries a danger. I have one of those covered trays with a lid and a cat flap at the front which really helps to contain the smell. I think they like the privacy too of going in private! I keep it in the bathroom - makes sense I guess. My cats are not raw but they don't get outside so I find they don't really smell like cats. I might transition them to raw, I'm still thinking about it.

Lucy xx

Going kitty raw really cut down on the litter smell for me. I tried several of the newer litters and liked the ones made from recycled newspaper and corncobs.

Raw was not expensive compared to the premium dry cat food I was feeding my guys which was causing health problems as they aged. And feeding raw is a lot cheaper than vet bills when your friend gets sick.
