Give it to me Raw

So I've developed a strong fondness for green juice lately. I'm typically making using celery, cucumber, apple, ginger, lemon, vitamineral green and tumeric or cayenne pepper. It seems to me based on all I've studied that there isn't much healthier stuff you can consume.

So my question is can you have too much of this stuff? :) With fruit juice I could entirely understand having too much could be bad as it would spike your insulin sky high. And if the veggies weren't organic I could understand how consuming that much pesticides, etc. But if you're consuming entirely organic and mostly all veggies (possibly a small amount of sweet fruit like apple) it doesn't seem like there's much danger in consuming a lot of juice (say 3-5 quarts a day).

Any thoughts?

Yes, you can drink too much juice. I'd say just use your common sense, observe how your body reacts to it, and determine for yourself as to whether its doing you good, or whether it's doing you harm.
If it's doing you good then just keep doing what you're doing, if it's doing you harm then try something else.

The key in diet is balance (in my opinion). A bit of this, and a bit of that, ya know!?
For me, I just eat ALL the colors of the rainbow every day. That's what I believe creates balance.

Well - if you are talking GREEN JUICE from LEAFY GREENS - ie, Kale, spinach, chard, parsley, Kale, and then through in some cucumber and celery and a bit of roots like beet and carrot and maybe an apple or two .. and do one gallon a day for 40 days - then tell me how you feel.

I did it - it is AMAZING ... Dark Leafy Green juice is one of the most challenging things to do on a daily basis .. and when done .. the health benefits are astounding. I have NEVER heard of any doctor telling someone -- , "wow way too much leafy greens .. better cut down on that " NEVER. So .. if you do it .. would love to hear what your EXPERIENCE is .. as I know what mine was ...

too much beet juice will cause your kidneys to stop functioning.

Hi Jon,
Providing you don't over do it my becoming over alkaline, symptoms would include; spaciness, feeling cold, lethargic etc then you can take as much as your body will need until the above symptoms manifest. Over alkalinity is not usually an issue for many early raw foodies as there can be a lot of acid waste products detoxing from the body at this time, but for longer term raw foodies the green juices can throw them out of balance relatively quickly.

green juice is taxing on the liver? i thought that was just fruit juice. wouldn't green juice be cleansing?

Doesn't "too much" already mean it's not a good thing?

Interesting question though.

If you are juicing more greens, fruit or vegetables than you could sit down and eat for a meal in their whole form, then you aren't doing your body any favors. Your body wasn't designed to handle juice regularly, if at all. But it can be fun from time to time. :)

I think a more appropriate question would be:

Is drinking green juice on a regular basis healthy?"
Or
Is drinking green juice healthier than eating the greens themselves?
Or
What are the health implications of removing fiber from your food on a regular basis?
Or
Is fiber an essential nutrient? And if so why am I removing it from my food if it's essential?

In my experience, from a health perspective, eating whole foods is the way to go.

Drinking juice as a habit isn't a healthful practice in my opinion. Perhaps it can be used temporarily if you have a digestive disorder and can't handle the fiber.

How about blending your greens and fruit? You get the best of both worlds. You still get the fiber but you get to drink it.

Don't forget to chew.
