I would really like to hear from anyone who went raw to help with a weak digestion (or simply anyone with real knowledge) What way of eating has helped, if any?
Cheers and may I say it is a beautiful hot 30 degrees here in Sydney today. A great day for mangoes!
:)
I used to have some real problems with digestion. The first thing I did was cut supper. I found that eating late really messed me up. By giving it more time, I could compensate for the slowness. I did OK with this approach, but it wasn't really a solution. I found that the real solution was in realizing the real problems. Which is turns out was attitude related.
I had diarrhea every day for almost 20 years, does that count lol! The biggies were cutting out all wheat gluten and processed sugars and fats. After I went raw, still had a few episodes, but still mostly smelly bloated and gaseous from things like kale, cruciferous veg. I was taking digestive enzymes for a few months, but now I don't need them. I think there is just an adjustment period for a lot of people digesting these types of food. If you bear with it a while, then the body can handle it better. I also only eat kale and broccoli, cabbage, etc. in moderation, and when I do I either juice it or blend it, and chew very thoroughly. I also made myself eat breakfast, for the first time in 20 years! yeah, I had to leave work in the beginning, but I've been able to eat it for almost 2 years now and never had an intestinal flare up. What kind of digestive problems are you having? Diarrhea, constipation, malabsorption? I am still having problems with malabsorption, so can't really help you there..... it's a slow healing process :)
Lol. Oh yeah that counts! Constipation really. Have had it all my life. Went to the doctors 6 months of being raw and he said that I was fully loaded on both sides. Went again today and he mentioned that I was still loaded on the left side, which I thought was odd seeing as I am going twice a day at the moment. (sorry if its too much info). I am thinking thou that it may of improved and could take awhile?
The Body Ecology Diet--that's its sole purpose and it's healing my digestion. Focus is on specific foods, very strict food combining, cultured, fermented foods, and probiotics. Eat only until you're 80% full. The whole book relates to the colon--how digestion relates to health.
Of course there's so much more. Eat slowly, mindfully. Stay hydrated, that kind of thing.
It is COLD 43º (or 7º C) and rainy here in Maryland. A great day for soups and teas! Or at least some warm spices in raw foods!
Hey Rawzilla. I have me a copy of Body Ecology but I find fermented foods really make me worse. I know it takes awhile so maybe I am alittle impatient. I am right into all that stuff as my middle son is autistic so I have been researching her work and others. I was so excited the first time I made coconut kefir with the starter and myself and 2 of my boys took it but nobody went for a week!! I just didn't have the strength of mind to put my boy through it for longer.
Stay warm
Wow, by "nobody went" do you mean nobody pooed for a week after drinking the kefir?
What other diets are you looking into (I know you're giving 80-10-10 a shot). What else, if you don't mind my asking?
That is so wonderful that you are using diet to help your autistic son. I have a nephew who was autistic as a baby. He was put on a yeast-free, sugar-free, gluten-free diet (not as difficult as Body Ecology), and he improved a lot.
Yes thats what I mean. lol. By other diets I was referring more to people who work in the biomedical approaches to autism and other related areas. You know, the whole mind/gut thing. Eg Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride has a book "Gut and Psychology Syndrome- Natural treatment for Autism, Dyspraxia, A.D.D, dyslexia, depression and schizophrenia.
My idea to try mono fruit for 10 days came after Free said she was rid of candida for doing so. I thought it was quite a bold statement which in turn motivated me to give it a go. I am hoping that a fruit cleanse will help with my digestion.
It would appear that I definately don't do well on grains so I am relying on the fruit. I have to say though that I can't wait to get back to green smoothies.
We have had Dillon on dairy free for the past 2 years and until recently gluten free but it appears that he may do better on gluten than not. I try and keep it low sugar but its very hard when I am married to a sugar junkie (hes not that bad but he just doesn't seem to get the whole biomedical approach to autism as I do, so what are ya gonna do?). He has improved but still no speech.
Wow, I've never heard of anyone doing better on gluten than not. That's unusual!
Oh, so I realized after I had posted earlier and this discussion "took off" that I wasn't thinking of the entire spectrum of digestion, and I left out a few things I find really helpful.
--Magnesium, either as CALM or cal/mag tablets is great for relieving constipation.
--Digestive enzymes are great for indigestion (which can occur even if you're eating "the right" foods, if you have weak digestion, as I do).
--And drink lots of water, especially with that magnesium.
You could also try getting medical qigong or acupuncture treatments to heal the colon/spleen/liver and so on. I'm getting medical qigong treatments now.
As for Dillon, have you considered chelation? I actually had chelation done for heavy metal poisoning. I have the lab results from before and after. It really works.
