Give it to me Raw

So i've been experimenting with bikram yoga the last few months. I've only gone about 7 times thus far. In some positions, i'm quite flexible. In other ways, hardly at all.
At any rate, some observations from my experiences.....
I feel really awesome afterwards, like incredible.
However, for the next few days following, i'm always super sore, wiped out, tired & sick feeling. I also usually have general stiffness and soreness in my lower back & lower sides of my back.

What should I attribute these reactions too? Why do I feel so good the after bikram the same day after I do it, but so crappy the next few days following? Is this detox or me just pushing myself too far? The soreness in my lower backsides would seem to indicate a strong detox reaction..
Do you suppose the negative effects will go away with continued, regular practice?
I love bikram, but I'm skeptical and not sure if it's good for me or not.
I'm certain a few of you have experience with bikram and was curious to get your thoughts.

I haven't done bikram in over a year (long story) but I loved it when I did. I think the warm/moist air helped open my lungs up like never before...and as a former smoker/asthmatic that was an awesome feeling. I got sore at first too but when I got into the groove of going a couple of times a week...the feeling susided.

Wow...I just realized that I am soo out of practice, I will probably rediscover that love/hate bikram relationship soon:)

I felt sick a few times after my first few classes too. Like bedridden headache throwing up sick. But then I tried it again at another hot yoga studio where they incorporate most of the bikram sequence, but they have other yin classes in the hot room as well. I love it now. In fact, I am at the beginning of a 40 day challenge. 5 classes a week for 40 days!

When you do it often enough it becomes easier. I also find I need to have some fruit about an hour before to keep my energy up. And hydrate like there's no tomorrow! It can be a good idea to back off a little if you are just starting out while you get used to the heat. Go into child's pose if you need a rest. I found that I would get dizzy or nauseous or tired towards the end of the class when I was starting out, but now I can make it through the whole class.

Hang in there it gets really great!

thank you for sharing your experience, it's enlightening. Everytime I do bikram as of now I get sick, where I just get all achy feeling and just wanna do nothing but rest. Prob from intensive toxicity release from what i'm gathering for you more experienced Bikram folks..

I just remembered some times (not often), I had trouble breathing in that hot room, had trouble catching my breath, and on rare occasions I actually left the room to "recover", in spite of the teachers' admonitions. One of the probs I had with Bikram, in fact, the reason I left the practice, was teacher militarism: "You're in charge of your body and your practice", they would say at the beginning of class, yet many of them relentlessly tried to kick my ass around in there, "Push, push, push. Push harder, Yoga Brudder"!

There are a lot of testimonials as regards people showing marked improvement with physical/mental ailments.......like with raw, matter of fact!!

Yeah I didn't like that militant aspect of bikram. That's what I love about my hot yoga studio. You get the heat but you don't feel like you are in bootcamp.

I'd rather feel the internal heat from my body getting a yoga workout than thinking I'm getting more of one just because I'm basically in a sauna. And Bikram screws up my hair. So no to Bikram for me.

I did Bikram about 20 times over a 6 week period recently. I think it would be better if you went more frequently. Maybe between 3-5 times a week. Your body will get used to it faster. You might want to take it easy in the beginning, though. And I found that I would get dizzy if I didn't have an electrolyte drink so I would definitely recommend that... maybe coconut water before and/or after workout. And plenty of hydration.

I think if you do it more frequently and build up the intensity slowly- the soreness should go away and you should feel better.

IMO Bikram overlooks the spiritual aspect and its more like Power Yoga stressing on strength and fitness. Its also strenuous on the body. For these reasons its not for me. But, It may be perfect for what you're looking for. Good Luck!

Have you tried adding water and msm and aloe, very hydrating but great for your joints and soreness. Speeds your recovery time

Yeah, I found Bikram to be decidedly UN-spiritual, imo. Just the opposite all physical.

But people healed. I heard stories. Would have gone to LA for nine weeks for teacher training. My doctors told me not to.
