Give it to me Raw

Hey Everyone,

I am feeling the need to do an adrenal gland cleanse and was wondering if my GI2MR peeps had suggestions of any good ones out there. I greatly appreciate any wisdom thrown my way!

I think it depends on what one means by smoothies. I'm a Daniel Vitalis fan too (you might have noticed), and I really appreciate his methods as to elixirs - they are essentially high nutrient medicinal foods - forumated with very specific guidelines as to how to combine the ingredients alchemically. It allows me to get the nutrition I need, that I would have a difficult time absorbing from foods that are not blended, and that are not superfoods. That is really the point of superfoods, is getting maximum nutrition for your calories. It is really the reason that I can now succeed on raw an not be malnourished, or cause myself imbalances.

I'm probably just forgetting what I said - I've written so many posts in the last hour or so :) What about glands?

John, I've found that I have to avoid a lot of sugar and some of the sweeter fruits like bananas and pineapple. Agave always gave me quite a sugar rush- much more than raw honey does.

I don't think cacao is good- esp not if you have adrenal fatigue. The adrenal fatigue nutritional needs really tend toward increased protein and sodium needs. I personally feel the best when i have a mix of macronutrients at each meal- fat, protein and carb. I do fine with these combos. I add Real Salt to my water.

As far as superfoods go, I'm not that into them, but I think bee products are healing and I eat goji berries on a regular basis. I consider gojis to be medicinal. In Taoist herbalism, they are a powerful yin and liver tonic.
I am more into tonic herbs and food energetics than "superfoods". Yes, some foods are super, but they're only super if they happen to be a fit for your condition.

I have found that eating animal foods has helped me- not the advice everyone wants to hear. I don't eat meat and haven't for 16 years, but increasing eggs, fish and goat dairy helped me a lot. I've cut back a bit now that I seem to have stabilized.

PS- when I do smoothies, I don't add all kinds of junk to them like sweeteners, nut butters, etc. Just fruit, sometimes greens, fermented goat's milk protein and maybe a little chia. I use lower glycemic fruit for the most part. I do better with protein in the am, like eggs.

Last year I was doing raw dairy (making my own kefir), some eggs, fish etc. but I'm doing better now without those things. I definitely wasn't handling the dairy well.

I have very weak digestion, ...for various reasons, what I'm doing now (largely vegan and raw) is working for me.

It's great to find so many people here are very open-minded and not just about the dogma of raw or a certain genre of raw. That is one thing I like about David Wolfe too - he is very open-minded, and really seeks to find out what works, knowing it's not going to be the same for everyone.

LOL, no fish in the smoothies! I wasn't really doing smoothies to speak of then, other than the more generic smoothie occasionally. I was largely doing the Body Ecology diet. It kind of backfired though, I think because of the mercury issue - so much sulfury food reacting to the mercury, but my body wasn't releasing it - hence retox instead of detox :(
I ate eggs to build my yin until I no longer had night sweats and dry skin and they started making me mucus-y. A little goat cheese helps me break down greens in salads, which I otherwise don't digest well.A few others have noticed this too.
I seem to do well on dairy-berry smoothie combos.

Rawzi- I miss Starfire/EV on this forum!! I still talk to her but I miss her input here!

David Wolfe has some interesting info on calcium and how that relates to osteoporosis. He suggests it's more about magnesium and silica deficencies - and rather that we end up with calcium deposits throughout the body from calcium supplements and many food sources. The calcium deposits are associated with nanobacteria and also heavy metals - he considers this to be one of the primary mechanisms of aging and degeneration. Very interesting stuff - makes a lot of sense to me. There are some good videos on youtube where he goes into this.
Hi RawZi... just finding my way back here! This has been a fun thread.

You said: I needed all the nutrients I could get, I was eating low calorie. I don't think the kale and cheese aged me, however I do not doubt you.

Just to clarify, I certainly didn't meant to imply that what you were eating was the cause of your osteoporosis. Simply that David's take on calcium and osteoporosis (an how calcification of the body is a primary mechanism of aging - turning the body to stone) is quite interesting in a more general sense - and it's quite a bit more complicated. If you're curious check out youtube, do a search for David Wolfe and Calcium. There is a series from his talk at Raw Spirit in 07 I think. It totally makes sense to me, given my own struggles in dealing with chronic candida etc.
Erin, can you explain what that means - how eggs would rebuild your yin? I had always had night sweats, but it seemed to me related to animal protein foods. I don't have them now. I am fighting dry skin, but it seems to be related to a candida flare up I had recently (I couldn't avoid doing a course of antibiotics).

Eggs are a very energetically yin food (meaning they build yin fluids and energy in the kidneys, which are the storage vessels for the body's supply of yin and yang).
The kidney meridian also controls hormonal functions in the body and kidney yin is used to make estrogen. I was diagnosed kidney yin deficient.

Yin is circulated to the liver and heart and if your heart is yin deficient (like mine was) it overheats easily (esp. if any warming or hot spices are eaten!) and the end result of that is hot flashes, night sweats and something called "5 palms heat" and also dream disturbed sleep. The tip of the tongue will be red.
I had classic 5 palms heat at night, where suddenly, my feet and hands would get really warm and then my back would heat up. It would keep me awake.
I no longer have this symptom.

There is a good book called "Healing With Whole Foods" by Paul Pitchford that is all about TCM food theory. It has helped me a lot.
Erin, thanks for the info on this. I will check out the book you recommend, I'm very interested. Your symptoms are similar to mine - with weak kidneys. An accupuncturist did once point out to me that the tip of my tongue was red. That was years ago, and I believe it was like that chronically, but now it is less so. I would wake up with my whole body sweating, I don't recall it starting with hands or feet though. But that has stopped.

I have tried adding raw egg yolks now and then (I give them to my cats) with my otherwise largely raw vegan diet, and it seemed to unbalance me. But I'm always experimenting... you never know!
"Trying to be a Natural Hygienist for a decade didn't heal my body... it just fed my candida :("

Cheers for Az'ya!

This has got to be the best sentence ever written on GI2MR! Can I quote you on this, forever?
