Give it to me Raw

I was wondering how many people on here are dog owners and what do you feed your dog?

I'm in the process of adopting this little guy (pictured above) who was abused by his first family, and now his second family doesn't want him either. They're currently feeding him snacks like Cheerios, Shreddies, and even giving him human Prozac for his anxiety disorders. ARG makes me so mad. I told the current owner that there are other remedies like Bach and that Prozac can cause suicide in humans, so who knows what it can do to a dog!!! But I don't think he cared. ;(

The last dog I had lived on pretty much rice and beef (no dog food at all) and lived to about his 15th-16th bday. Unfortunately, I never knew his real age because I found him on the street. I had my last dog before I knew about raw foods and got into nutrition.

So now, I want to give my new pup the best that is possible in nutrition and healing. I'm currently looking at the BARF diet which gives the dog what it was meant to eat - raw meat etc. I am also going to be substituting wheatgrass into his diet and possibly EFAs for his coat from Vega. Same one I take. ;)

So does anyone have any suggestions for me from one dog owner to another? I am happy to report that this dog loves fruit, so I'm going to get him lots of organic strawberries, apples and more!

THX everyone for all your input and help in advance. ;)

***Oh and I wanted to add. I'm actually completely against the domestication of animals, I think all animals should all be free. But seeing how people treat their pets really pisses me off. Thus, me adopting them and trying to make a difference in at least one animals life. ;(

That is so nice of you to take care of that poor dog. To start off with you should have a crate for the dog in the house. If it has been mistreated it is probably somewhat spooked so a cage is a nice safe place for it. You can feed the dog in it and keep a small bowl of water in it. You may want to keep it confined at first and let it out for walks and shorter periods of time to get used to you.

I would feed it several small meals a day because it's stomach may be sensitive. I would make it some sunflower probiotic cheese and put a little dollop of it on the food you choose. I blend up all kinds of vegetables in the blender and use as a gravy. Usually just leftovers from what I have been making. Parsley, garlic, carrots, and kale are good. I would also give it some ground flax for the omegas. Bananas rolled in flax are good too.

Good luck with your new friend. Let us know how it goes!

Really your dog like garlic?

Bananas rolled in flax sound like a great idea!

p.s. Do you have a name for it yet?

I'm going to keep his old name. I'm not going to share it until I get him because it's a very uncommon name and his owner might Google and find this thread. ;)!

Well I'm sure he would love the raw meat food movement.

I was reading though that garlic and onion is toxic for pets though!

"Garlic and onions in all forms (cooked, raw, powdered, etc.) are dangerous foods for dogs (and cats). Garlic and onions contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can break apart red blood cells and cause anemia. Consumed in large enough quantities, onions and garlic can result in severe anemia and even death if not treated by a veterinarian.

It is not known how large a quantity of onions or garlic must be consumed to be toxic."

Hi I have had pets for 40 years that ate people food that included garlic and onions and never had a problem. But it's not a lot just occasionally. Also I have always had dogs over 40 lbs so maybe small dogs or poodles can have more sensitivities in that area. Also I have had very little incidence of fleas. The dogs I have had in the past 10 years haven't had flea shampoo used on the either. A dog went to the vet and came back with a couple fleas and I washed her with ivory soap and she was fine- no other fleas. So in no way did I mean to give you bad advice- that is just my experience..

You wanna both snowboard and ski? You usually have to stick to one if you want to master it. Not saying you can't do both, but maybe wait until you got the hang of it before switching up.

My dog likes to sleep between my legs. Warm and I rather not speculate what's going through Mr. SS McCracken's head. Then again, he likes to sniff the cat's butt after using the litterbox :hurl:

This is WONDERFUL news!!!!! Many blessings from God to you. I love yoga. It is working miracles in my physical and spiritual walk with the Lord. Someday I'd like to visit India with my mother and sister.

One of my coworkers left a Little Debbie zebra cake for me for my b-day. I ate half and gave the other half to my husband. Sometimes I'm able to resist and some days (like now when Aunt Flo arrives) I nibble. The other day my husband made stovetop...

I love food as long as it's good. I love the fact my husband raised two turkeys for himself instead of being like his friends and buying the five dollar turkey at Walmart (yes there really is a five dollar turkey). My grandpa died at 103 and that'...
