Hi Nicole,

I'm so glad to hear you are trying The Body Ecology Diet (BED), especially with your autistic son. A relative of mine was healed from autism (or ASD anyway) on a similar diet--no yeasts, molds, sugars, gluten, etc.

I am not doing all raw vegan on the BED; it is not recommended, plus I feel so much better adding animal protein and some cooked food in my diet. Donna Gates is supportive of each person finding the version of the BED that works for them, even if it is raw vegan; however, she is clear that it is not ideal. She says at the least, have some eggs (they are an excellent source of protein and very healing for the thyroid).

I can say after having tried several very strict and "healthy" diets over many years, the only "enemies" I have encountered that have led me to setbacks and disasters are anything that feeds yeast, including high-fruit and any sweet food in excess, and improper food combining. Organic, free-range animal protein (with animals that were fed their natural diet, usually grass) does not feed yeast, and is strengthening and grounding.

She says, and I found out for myself, high raw is not ideal during the early phases of the BED when the body is in an "expanding/weakened" condition (I had just come off of a high-fruit, 100% raw diet--extremely expanding and weakening for me). Also, as she says and I experience, high raw works better at different times in your healing and with seasonal changes. I felt awful on 100% raw, especially with the high fruit, and now I go between high raw (80%) to low raw (20%-40%), following my intuition.

I understand the diet's main goals to be starving the yeast, recolonizing the colon with healthy bacteria, and creating an alkaline condition in the body. Although fruit is alkine-forming, it feeds yeast, so it is definitely off limits until candida is under control.

I'm pretty sure I read Kombucha is not allowed.

Hi Tony (and RGG)! It sounds as if what I may have worked out, that's been working really well for me, must be quite similar to what you describe is working for you. I hope it's ok to mention non-vegan or non-raw foods here, but after a truly awful experience trying "100%" raw, I found I definitely need to have grains and at least some dairy every day, plus a couple of cooked meals on the weekend which include some brown rice and eggs.

After a bit of experimenting, the good news for me was that the Essene bread ("Purelife" brand) I buy here, while not classed as "raw" due to its baking temperature, has a decidedly different effect on me compared to a cooked grain - I found this by doing a week or two of a cooked grain, then swapping it for the Essene bread to the same calorie count without changing anything else - the cooked grain just made me more tired each day, whereas the Essene bread made me feel energised but still grounded.

What I have, just for interest (and the possibility it might add some info for you, RGG):

Thank you Meadow for your reply, all responses are welcome here,i love to hear whats working for others, for some its high raw and not necessarily vegan.

For me its raw and vegan...interesting about the bread for sure,im not really drawn to heavy foods like that,am finding the raw fats really doing the trick for me...i feel so freakn good its awesome!

Im not keen for grains either, but as i said i enjoy hearing whats working for others...Do you train much Meadow....i want to see if theres a positive link between those who are athletic like myself and eat lower fruit, with great success and tip top energy :)

How grains are prepared makes a HUGE difference in how they make me feel, too. A bowl of cooked brown rice or quinoa would totally weigh me down. But cooked grains that have been sprouted or fermented are just perfect. Sometimes I make whole grain sour dough bread. The dough has been fermented for four days before baking, and it totally changes the grains and makes them digestible to me. I also make oji, which is fermented millet porridge. I eat raw sprouted buckwheat most days.
The essene bread is sprouted, I believe, so that probably is what makes the difference in energy levels to you.
I like to keep it mostly raw though, so cooked grains are only a once-a-week or less thing for me. But when I have them I make sure they are sprouted or fermented before being cooked.

I'm editing this to mention that if you eat grains, they MUST be organic. Non-organic grains contain mercury and other nasty stuff. They add poisons to keep the rats away from the silos.

neeta, i eat loads of greens, and high fruits, but not that high...

like i have found that high high fruit does not really work for me. When i eat fruit i HAVE to balance it out with greens or I don't feel satisfied, and i feel too unbalanced. I make sure to eat a lot of greens to balance it all out. nuts i find are pretty difficult for me to digest, and i get addicted to them easily. they are like a trigger for me. When i start eating them, for some reason i feel like I can't stop, and then they kill me. I get all sluggish, and a little dehydrated.

I think in this lifestyle it is all about balance, and what is right for the individual. It is like everyone has their own way, and we constantly learn from each other in each other's differences. awesome! =)

I know I have learned so much from you, and I'm curious what you generally eat day to day. Through the years my diet also changes significantly.

I love eating lots of greens. generally, the more the better. they make me feel balanced. Too much fruit is bad for me. It feels good to a certain extent, but then if i go overboard on the fruit i get tired, overworked, and even sleepy. My body definitely thrives on high greens, not necessarily low fruit, but just not high fruit. I will eat a salad of just 1 lb of greens maybe with like a cucumber or something. it feels really good. I love to make the first thing i eat in the day green juice, or a head of romaine or green/red leaf lettuce.

for me, something i struggle with on an emotional and psychological level is balance. I think that's why high fruit is difficult for me to adjust to because I am so out there. I mean I need to be more grounded. It is something i need focus with. Grounding myself emotionally, physically, spiritually, psychologically.

Maybe a good strategy would be that with every fruit you eat, try to eat it with some greens, too. like every time you want to eat fruit, make a fruit sandwich thingie and wrap it in some big leafs of romaine lettuce with some alfalfa sunflower sprouts and some of those baby greens mix on the inside, and roll it up with the romaine on the outside.

I don't understand how dropping your fruit intake will help though if you like to eat fruits?

me personally, i wish i found it easier to eat less greens and more fruit because it just travels easier. you can buy an apple just about anywhere, but greens are a different story. also, it looks very strange to people to see a person chomping on a head of lettuce in the middle of the street having a picnic going to town on a fatty leaf. someone will eat a banana, and no one looks twice.

i am really curious to hear about your dietary changes over time, and what inspired you to make those changes.

i do the same thing. like i go in phases. something works for a while, and then i adjust it for whatever reason even if it is just seasonal.

also, i'm curious...

is there any one food that you are particularly attached to? like you eat it every day, and it's difficult to imagine one day without it? just a little curious. i'm really interested to know if that is common at all.

shit the computer! just replied in detail and erased it all with one dumb bump of a button bahhhh, lol ;)

thanks for replying Circle,i love hearing whats working for you hon.Are you training much at all,i remember you being pretty athletic?? that was my real question, anyone eating lower fruit whos athletic and what areyou eating??

I have had to lower fruit intake for health reasons, the opening post of my blog explains in detail why...
I have upped my greens too,and having a whole lettuce every morning in my fruit smoothie, lower fruit intake for me is 2 bananas and a cup of blueberries,as opposed to 12-14 banananas or 2 whole rockmelons lol ;)

i am feeling tip top,and really quickly too...im most pleased with these positive changes babe~i am eating my fruits with greens every time,or some avo and greens or seeds with greens etc,and this is working a treat actually...

im not overly attached to any one food, that being said i do enjoy bananas, but my health is paramount,so i eat what i need to and enjoy~ to be as well as i can be...
thanks again for your input Circle xxo

Yes I am still very active. If I do not keep active, I get really nervous. Lately I have been getting really into ashtanga (yoga). It calms my nerves, and allows me to expel my energy in a better way.. I have been having some issues concerning letting go, and hoarding. anyway.

When I am on high greens i feel like i have more of a steady flow of energy throughout the day.

sometimes it is difficult for my head, like my head gets confused, and it's hard for me to eat just one or two banana. like i said above sometimes I have a difficult time dealing with moderation, and that is one of the main things i have with high fruit is that it triggers that hoarding mentality within me, and i never feel like there is enough. it's something that i am looking to address right now in my life.

i love high greens. I feel much stronger. this is what is working for me right now. i am a strong believer in the power of greens. =)

oh i hear ya girl...i use to feel so panicked about running out of food, when i ate 811,hence i was stuffing in food all the time,up and down with the blood sugar levels...

I am testing myself out now, with 4-6 hour breaks between meals,i didnt carry a snack with me(just in case) yesterday, and i literally felt terrified i would crash and not have food...but guess what with this new way of eating,it didnt happen, yes i got hungry at 5 hours, but i didnt crash,my energy stayed beautifully constant...perhaps this also made me have a problem with letting go too,i am working on this with my father issues,i understand what you mean!

I overate like a fiend on 811...i was eating up to 4000cals a day,now i am pushing it to get to 2000cals a day..bit of a diff, and my tummy doesnt feel all bloated and fat...its the flattest its been for a long time...

high greens are a must for me too, greens have always been important to me.

Heading out on my 50km ride this morning, looking forward to the sweaty training..:)

RGG, I was like this too until I went on The Body Ecology Diet (which eliminates fruit for a while and has very low carbs). Before this, I was always afraid of running out of food--when out or at home--because my blood sugar levels would crash, or the yeasties would demand more food, and I would panic. My hunger was a panic and crisis. It really controlled my days, in a way.

Now, with very low glycemic index food, when I get hungry it is SO different. So mellow. Overall I am more mellow, but also when I'm hungry, and I mean truly hungry because, for example, I left the house without food and went a few hours past my mealtime, I just get a little tired, a little quieter--all natural responses for the body running on low fuel.

It's so much nicer this way!

oh Rawzilla,i hear ya,its awful isnt it? im still eating fruit, but much lower fruit and wonderful fats and so many greens,it is making all the difference.

Hunger panic its just awful isnt it,i am glad that is getting to be a thing of the past.:)
I too feel more mellow too, such a relief after feeling so jittery and highly strung.Yeh i noticed when i have got hungry lately, just got quite and a little weary, then i ate and felt fine again, yet i didnt feel snippy or irritable as i would have before...

Sooo much nicer Rawzilla.thanks so much for your input xo

Yes, exactly, R.G. Goddess! I feel just like you described. I had forgotten that hunger is not supposed to feel like a crisis. And I don't have to eat a lot or all the time anymore. I can tell it is just energy fuel, not sugar spikes. I feel I have more control again, whereas before the hunger-panic controlled me all day and night.

It was so exhausting to be so revved up and chasing food all the time.

I'm so glad you have found your way to a better place too. I can totally relate. :-)

Reply to This

OMG~relate or what~you have it in a nutshell Rawzilla, far out...i thought thats how i was meant to feel, always possessed and thinking about food,i would be out somewhere and totally scared i would get hungry and crash, and get cranky...

yes,its wonderful to no longer feel driven by hunger and food, cos it is so exhausting...
