Anyone else noticed all the hate directed at vegans lately? Even some of the most seemingly open minded people are attacking the ideology. One of the most spiteful rants I've read lately comes from a student at Loyola:
"Soup! The thought pops into your head, a faint glimmer of hope at first, but soon a fantastic plan for salvation. You stride over to get yourself a nice hot bowl of hearty minestrone but gack! You are presented a choice between vegan potato leek and vegan lentil.
...
So, extremists, why not switch over to a more omnivorous lifestyle? I know that many of you take a moral issue with factory farming, and I agree with you. Mistreating farm animals is a horrible practice that we need to eradicate soon. But the fact of the matter is, hens are going to plop out an egg a day whether you eat it or not. Mama cows would still give enough milk to share between their calves and us, even if we stopped stuffing them with hormones. And unless you’re a baby, milking cows is a lot less creepy than drinking human milk.
Animal by-products can readily be consumed in an ethical way. If we do it right, we can promote the proper treatment of animals while living more moderate and well-rounded lives ourselves. Not to mention the fact that non-extremist soup tastes a lot better."
I'd like to here your opinions about why all the hate for vegans all the sudden? What do you think?
Edit: Sorry if this is confusing, it's a student article in a college newspaper and the author keeps switching between 2nd person and 3rd. To clarify, he's the one wanting soup and in the second paragraph he's addressing vegans as a group (So, extremists...")
These cows are killing our atmosphere and as sad as it is to say (my grandparents used to run a free range farm) they're going to have to die off if the rest of the planet is going to survive.
Please tell me this is sarcasm. You really believe that? That's been a vegetarian myths for years & debunked countless of times, look it up. Grass finish Cow's don't hurt the environment. They shit great fertilizer & thrive on rocky/hill grass pastures were farming veggies/fruit would be next to impossible.
"Cattle raised on pasture actually produce more methane than feedlot animals, on a per-cow basis. " look it up
yeah thanks but no thanks on the Vegetarian Myth propaganda, I've already read it and I didn't find it convincing, but i would agree that one of us needs to check their sources...

you mean like MY FAMILY FARM? Yes, I think I know what's involved in free range farming and I also know that with the amount of pasture land required per cow your going to run out of land before you satisfy the world's beef-lust. The only reason there is so much open pasture land now precisely because they've been crammed into factory farms for years now. In that time we've gone from sustenance farming to fast food nation. You want to unleash those hoards back onto pasture land and just assume the earth can just take it? If monoculturing crops on vast tracts of land is so devastating, what do think legions of monocultured animals will be like?
Just to get it straight, none of you pro-meaters on this thread are advocating abolishing veganism? That was my problem with the student in Loyola, and I hope you all see him for the spoiled brat he really is. He doesn't like any of the crappy cafeteria food and thinks soup would be good, and because his meat stew isn't ready for him on demand he freaks out on vegans demanding they stop their "extreme" diet, all because the Soup Nazi over here doesn't like lentils.
I haven't heard any of you demand that I cease and desist my vegan lifestyle so I'll assume you're not in his camp. There's a big difference between seeing the negative side of something and wanting it abolished because it doesn't suit you.

my brother's father in law is a farmer, (they farm sheep and kill lambs) and once he said to me, so why are you vegan, is it the moral, ethical, environmental, spiritual or health reasons? It made me laugh so much, I just said its because of the whole lot?! I don't think he understood why I found it so funny...
my mother once said totally seriously, but what would happen to the poor cows and sheep if everyone went vegetarian, there wouldn't be any any more that would be terrible to have a countryside without cows in it. Which also made me laugh. Alot. Bless her.
Vegans are weak and die early....JUST KIDDING! I don't hate anybody for their choices. I just hate when people try to act superior because of their food choices.
