Give it to me Raw

Anyone else noticed all the hate directed at vegans lately? Even some of the most seemingly open minded people are attacking the ideology. One of the most spiteful rants I've read lately comes from a student at Loyola:

"Soup! The thought pops into your head, a faint glimmer of hope at first, but soon a fantastic plan for salvation. You stride over to get yourself a nice hot bowl of hearty minestrone but gack! You are presented a choice between vegan potato leek and vegan lentil.
...
So, extremists, why not switch over to a more omnivorous lifestyle? I know that many of you take a moral issue with factory farming, and I agree with you. Mistreating farm animals is a horrible practice that we need to eradicate soon. But the fact of the matter is, hens are going to plop out an egg a day whether you eat it or not. Mama cows would still give enough milk to share between their calves and us, even if we stopped stuffing them with hormones. And unless you’re a baby, milking cows is a lot less creepy than drinking human milk.
Animal by-products can readily be consumed in an ethical way. If we do it right, we can promote the proper treatment of animals while living more moderate and well-rounded lives ourselves. Not to mention the fact that non-extremist soup tastes a lot better."

I'd like to here your opinions about why all the hate for vegans all the sudden? What do you think?

Edit: Sorry if this is confusing, it's a student article in a college newspaper and the author keeps switching between 2nd person and 3rd. To clarify, he's the one wanting soup and in the second paragraph he's addressing vegans as a group (So, extremists...")

i think some people are just so attached to meat it's hard for them to let it go and they create a reality in which they justify their practices. its really just about choices to me now. i accept that some people just eat animal products. they are just not as aware yet. some day they may be, however i do agree. some people loathe the idea of not eating animal products to the point of hating on vegans like they think vegans are just wrong and offensive. alot of the problem is this perpetuation of the idea that you 'have' to eat meat by the meat industries. people just need to be educated on nutrition better. it especially annoys me when people who's ideology when it comes to food is to shove anything in their mouth because they want it, try to tell me about nutrition. the people who eat junk food like lollies, fries, take away burgers ect tell me I can't get enough iron or protein and they just don't know anything beyond what the tv has told them.

"i accept that some people just eat animal products. they are just not as aware yet. some day they may be,"

That just about sums up why omnivores don't have a lot of patience for vegans anymore. It's the superiority, the arrogance, the pretension that many vegans adopt when they're in their first few years. It's the notion that vegans are superior in the knowledge and spirituality of all things simply because they haven't eaten meat for a while.

I also think it's interesting, the point on iron and protein. I've spoken to people who've experienced, and experienced myself, the issues of iron and protein. Eaten between two and three pounds of dark leafy greens; months on 811 vegan; months on low sugar higher fat; months on high protein superfoods... And then I eat 6 ounces of salmon and my hair stops falling out and I stop shivering in 85 degree weather. No matter how much I believed in veganism, or fruitarianism, or greens; no matter how much I wanted it to work, it didn't. And I really tried, so don't no one give me that "you did it wrong" crap because I really, really wanted all that stuff to be true for me, it just wasn't.

you do know that our ancestors ate insects, and savored animal fats...right?

and it's probable that they sought them and enjoyed them too. (yes, a juicy banana slug was probably drooled and slobbered over ; )

industrial meat = bad

free-range, forage, hunt, kill, scavenge = your lineage

(....or pretend it ain't so to justify a Utopian dream or an accusatory stance...)

A lot fo vegans in the UK are angry vegans, i.e. animal rights vegans, who look pretty unhealthy. I went to a vegan fair a couple of years ago and it was just terrible, they all looked like they were on death's door. So I don't really blame people for thinking it is unhealthy to be vegan, to look at most cooked vegans over here I would agree. Just give it time, soom the world will be over run with gorgeous, glowing sexy beasts like us and then who'll be laughing.

There is a negative side to veganism if it comes with an elitist superiority condescending energy. This is a potential that is always there and when caught up in the moment of being and the person may not be aware of this potential this 'energy' can be expressed and enacted onto other people, and this would breed resentment in those enacted upon. It is subtle. This happens through social interaction.

Veganism can be very divisive if it thinks that vegan=good and meat-eater=bad, evil, wrong, or whatever; then people become judged; and you can say eating meat has negative consequences, but this judging and secretly thinking in the heart you are better than other people and devaluing them and being rude to them because of dietary choices has negative consequences also.

And I know meat-eaters can be very mean to vegans too, maybe even more so? In the end we are just humans and we should love each other unconditionally.

But the veganism that is against animal abuse, and factory farming, and the vegansim that benefits the healing of the planet I recognize. Veganism is an admiral ideal but it may not be possible for some to attain it nutritionally imo. =)

Vegans are humans after all and as long as there is free will the potential for doing good or evil is always there no matter who you are or what you call yourself.

well in all fairness for as long as there have been meat eaters versus vegans there has been peeps hating on each other for having opposing life choices....i say stick with what you believe in,be happy with it,and you CAN still respect and love your fellow man(well most of them lol)~and live peacefully :)

any one on opposite sides to ourselves may think we are 'extreme',hell being raw vegan is seen as extreme, eating high fruit is extreme, eating raw meat is extreme, training like an athltete is extreme, nude sunbaking is extreme, taking care of yourself really well is extreme...you know, all depends on anothers perspective/opinion...and we have to remember it is just another persons opinion after all,and whether we can live with that or not,is up to us as individuals .
peace :)

ps arrogance and superiority is vile,no matter the cause...
you catch more flies with honey than vinegar,so i say sweeten up and be kind to one another, and you never know who might sit up and take notice of what you are saying ;)

It's a nice thought for animal-loving meat-eaters *the irony* but it's unattainable. There are several farms who practice ethical treatment but for all, it's futile.

Factory farming < free-ranged grass-finish cows. What's futile about that?

Reply to This

yeah. its definitely better. i wish there were even more people getting their meat from ethical sources if they must have it. i've even considering having a bbq with all grass fed organic meat for my meat eating friends to convert them to better more ethical meat. i'm sure they'd see that it's better for them.

It would be so much better for them to switch over to farmed shrimp, scallops, oysters etc. I am not sure if there are good sources for those but something that doesn't have a higher brain seems the most ethical to me if you're going to eat seafood.

yeah i think fishing is very controversial. the technologies they use to fish now really are literally draining the sea.

Better, but what are you gonna do about the methane? These cows are killing our atmosphere and as sad as it is to say (my grandparents used to run a free range farm) they're going to have to die off if the rest of the planet is going to survive.
