Give it to me Raw

This was a discussion I had on Facebook a little while back and decided to post it here to see what the rest of you think. I've been making smoothies in my Vitamix for my dad. I've been buying the food for him and it's all been organic. One day he went out and bought some groceries; none of it was organic. He wanted me to make him a smoothie. I didn't want any conventional produce in my Vitamix. It's been filled with 100% organic food since I bought it. My dad thought I was being ridiculous.

So what do you think? Am I? Most vegetarians/vegans don't want to use the same cutting board that meat's been on. Is this that much different?

Vitamix blenders run at about $NZ1400 here in New Zealand, so, no, I've never seen one and at that sort of price I'm not likely to.

Besides which I'm very happy with my venerable Kenwood Chef, and use a cheap Magic Bullet for quick one cup smoothies.

If the Vitamix is made of some sort of plastic you might be right - it might be difficult to clean it well enough if it gets tainted

I have noticed that having a Vitamix seems to be a sort of a status symbol around here. It reminds me of some musicians I've known: good musician = listen to this music; not so good musician = look at my Martin.

It's like the Ferrari of the raw food world. Didn't you know? ;)

I kid. Actually, it's just a freakin' awesome blender. If my house got robbed, I'd be more pissed if the theives stole the blender than my 42 inch plasma. But, I also use the Magic Bullet when I'm on the road and it does a great job as well, so I have to side with you on that one. Whether it's the Blendtech, Vita, or your Kenwood Chef, there's nothing like being able to make as much smoothie as you want, the way you want, any time. Shame on anyone else for saying anything less just because one doesn't have a brand name blender.

No slave to fashion here. Got a $20 blender five years ago, still runs on high. I don't unnerstan yet why particles "should" be microsized. Raw, raw, sis-boom-bah!! Yowie, YB

Amen, it was your Father for Damn sake. I was never close to my Father and he passed 2 years ago. I miss him more all the time and wish I had committed more effort to reach out to him.

This is not about who is right! This is about having effective relationships with those in our lives. just wash the damn blender and give your Father a hug and thank him for being in your life!

Charles, I certainly get you.No pestiside residue in my blender please. I sterilize it weekly in dishwasher and Baking Soda.
You might want to buy him his own blender, $30- or a used one at the thrift store and sterilize it for him. You know the old addage "teaching old dogs new tricks..."

If he's used to Vita Mix smoothies, he might not want to settle for $30 blender smoothies.....They are a little grittiy, you know...:) I used one for 3 weeks at the in laws, and when I came back I was totally in Awe at the sound of my Vita Mix.

Charles, were you feeling hopeful that your dad was beginning to appreciate your Pure Organic Smoothies, and might be getting your point, and then when he did that you felt disappointed, anguished, frustrated and hurt that all of the sudden it was blaringly obvious that he hasn't gotten on your page at all yet? Did you need some validation and appreciation and weren't getting it so you felt resentful?

Thanks for bringing this topic up Charles.

I definitely feel it on the not wanting to support the consumption of pesticide sponges on any level. When I am cooking for people or with people I always want 100% organic. The issue is how to be clear on the expanding love without injecting judgments.

I want you to be as healthy as possible dad and I know that pesticide sponges are not the best and are certainly irresponsible to/with earth.

That's funny. I don't think any pesticide residue will stay in the vitamix plastic jar after washing. :) But I get your point.

LOL! That's exactly what I thought, Pink.

a lot of organic produce is covered in beeswax, shellac, or food grade petroleum products. Have you ever put store bought apples, cucumbers, peppers, etc in your vitamix? Organic produce, especially tropical or imported fruit is often sprayed with MSG as a "natural" growth enhancer/pesticide. You wouldn't believe how cheap it is to produce those organic stickers that start with a 9. You'd be surprised on what is actually on a lot of "organic" fruits and veggies. Considering the above, and the fact that the vitamix carafe is made of plastic which i also consider kinda toxic, then I guess it's too late for you lol. I would've made your pop that smoothie... i think it's great that he's been drinking them... hope he isn't turned off now
