Give it to me Raw

Hi, I have recently developed an intolerance to nuts. I have been eating raw brazil nuts and filberts for the last few months. I started to develop itchy, oily skin that began to break out (badly!) and after eliminating a variety of foods, found the culprits.

Can anyone suggest an alternative? Perhaps a nut that is less likely to create an allergic reaction? As it's different for everyone, I am hoping someone has had this sensitivity and found another raw nut that they can tolerate.

If not nuts, any suggestions for another easy to grab and carry food? I need something simple, raw, and filling that I can take with me while I bike and to eat at work. I prefer to keep my diet as simple as possible... little to no prep time! :)

Thanks!!

Kaya

RawZi, do you have a local source for your butter? There are no pasture-fed raw dairies here in the desert and I'd love to know where I can buy a really high-quality raw butter online.

Cool - thanks RawZi - I'll look into it. We do have a producer of raw milk here in Tucson, but they rarely have cream or butter. And I'd prefer to get it from a pastured animal - who eats real grass, which isn't possible here for the most part.

I hadn't taken the time to search for online sources, so I was just curious if you knew of some. Thanks!!

Good to know - wasn't sure about the Phoenix listing. I'll look into it.

I think I would prefer to buy butter if I can. I don't think I will use enough to make it worthwhile to try to make my own, and I can't really use the rest of the milk cause of my issues with sulfur foods.

Bathing in it...?! That sounds like fun. Unfortunately I don't have a bathtub :( But I would be hesitant for the same reason that I avoid all raw dairy (other than butter, if I had that) - the sulfur.

I have "impaired sulfoxidation" which won't be truly corrected until the mercury is out of my body (got a ways to go on that...). In fact, doing raw milk kefir along with a lot of other high sulfur foods, while assuming the "common knowledge" that sulfur in your diet is a good thing, caused me extreme distress. I got weaker and weaker over a period of several weeks. When I did a test eliminating all of this class of sulfur foods and supplements from my diet it was life-changing. Sounds strange, I know. I wrote about this recently in Zoe's thread about MSM if you're curious.
Aww, thanks RawZi. I've hopefully learned my lesson after repeating it recently in the great garlic experiment. Seriously not fun. Still recovering.

Yes, I agree, it might not have the same effects topically. But at this point, I'm not inclined to go back to all the work of getting raw milk and kefiring it. It's enough to do coconuts, and beet kvass and what have you :)

Having sulfur foods around becomes a temptation as well - because of this problem I have, they are super addicting for me. I feel great after first eating them, but then there is a residual downside. Basically because the sulfur compounds react with mercury in my system - mercury is like a drug in that sense - you get high from it, until it settles back into your tissues and organs where it proceeds to cause great damage and you crash.
What I call coconut kefir is just the fermented water - not including the meat. I ferment the meat separately, sometimes using some of the finished kefired water as a starter. So that is a fermented coconut cream. Yumm. Great with berries :)

Well, that's news to me, that coconut cream can chelate mercury? Got a reference on that one - I did a quick search and didn't see anything to that effect. .. and it is an area I'm pretty tuned into.

For the reasons stated here and elsewhere though, I avoid chelators at this point, because most don't get the mercury out of my body efficiently. Quite a controversial area, but if there's one person I listen to on this, it's Andy Cutler, who wrote the manual "Amalgam Illness". When I follow his advice, life is much much better! ...and his advice is not to use weak chelators... (strong by my definition - very specific chemicals that aren't in coconuts :) ...otherwise there is redistribution of mercury - especially for some of us who have issues excreting it.

Hey guess what? I'm starting a new ning forum - for people dealing with mercury and heavy metal detox! I'll let you know when it's up and running if you're interested (or if anyone else here is...).
I have the same type of reaction with nuts, so I switched to seeds only. I replace nuts with sunflower seeds most of the time. Sometimes pumpkin. And they are much cheaper. Also, I try to visualize how many nuts I can have at any one time by thinking about the nut in it's natural form. If I were out in nature, and had to open the nuts individually to get to the nut meat or seed, how many would I really be willing to open at one time for a snack. I limit myself to that amount (an extra small handful) and eat that many at one time.

I think people can definitely overdo it on the nuts. For me, avocado and coconut meat (even soaked flakes) are a better alternative than nuts.

Thanks Bunny, that's an excellent visualization! That is definitely a challenge (for those of us in rich countries like the US) - re-connecting with a sense of what we would do if we were in a "natural" setting and not surrounded by instant access to tons of food.

Have you tried seeds instead? I find nuts are way too oily and fatty. Maybe experiment with other nuts such as soaked almonds?
You could also try a granola made from from sprouted buckwheat.

Bike fuel? Thats gotta be something sweet and easy to digest. The body has almost infinite stores of fat for exercise, but limited stores of carbohydrate.
