Give it to me Raw

Dr. Tel-Oren was discussing The truth about SUGAR on the Raw Diva's teleseminar Monday. He spoke about agave being a sugar that must go through the liver before turning into glucose. Basically what I got from this is that agave is the same as high fructose corn syrup! This means it isn't good for us!! I guess I should go back to adding dates for sweetness in my recipes...

What do you all think???

Grrrr...

I realised this quite some time ago, but it's such a pain in the butt trying to make ice cream and chocolates with dates!
The cost is also exponentially higher for dates, at least for me.

I hate it when people reinforce my already-present doubts and desires to try alternate measures...

*sigh*

Stevia is a good alternative that actually decreases your blood sugar level; Both the powder and liquid are extremely sweet but the powder has a better after taste. I grew my first 2 stevia plants this year and use the leaves right off the bush which taste even better then the powder.

Okay, stevia is a great idea (especially if it's grown at home).
I've never grown it though, so it didn't really occur to me to incorporate it heavily into my food prep. I'm also making larger batches of food for sale, so my major concern as far as stevia vs. agave basically had to do with cost-effectiveness. The commercially available stuff is ridiculously expensive, so I use that in extreme moderation.

I also don't mind the aftertaste, but getting it directly from the plant seems a better idea still (especially since the powder sort of creeps me out due to it's whiteness--that stuff used to be cheap and REALLY green when I was a kid!). :)

A friend told me he gets his Stevia in bulk from the amish in Pennsylvania for a good price I will ask him how he gets his supply and how much it is.

That would be awesome.
Thanks, Nick! :)

Ok, I just heard that stevia is not the best either. Its bad for your neurologicals or something......crazy I know. What is there to sweeten with./
However, I would think, if you are eating the whole leaf, it would be better than that liquid stuff, or white powder. I for one will still use it some.

Yes, me too. I'm still using it. I do realize that one can have a lot of stress if one worries too much. But I like information, and I'm glad to know about it, so maybe I can cut back if I decide to.
Plus,
I just had to put that out there and pull some chains. :)

This was Dr. Tel-oren who is doing lectures this week, who said that about stevia.
From listening to him, and all the research he's pored over, I trust what he says. He says its ok in moderation I think.
He also says though, that taking in sweet things that have no calories still triggers the pancreas to secrete insulin because it THINKS there will be sugar to process. That really stopped me to think.
I'm still in process though, so I have to think about that one for awhile. That would mean I can't drink my tea with stevia, which is about the only thing i use it for.

Its interesting listening to his lectures, because some stuff he says contradicts what I've heard from other Doctors I respect, so It gives me pause. Now its up to me to decide.........

Isn't everything second hand information? ARen't we always getting our information to inform ourselves from second hand sources? I mean, I'm not a scientist. How can i really know what the stevia, or anything else is doing to my body if its subtle over a long period of time?
Aren't there some people who really know biochemistry, etc? His lectures are loaded with it. He's not some motivational speaker. should we trust no one? What do you think, PLA?
I mean , I understand the thing about making our own decisions, but where are we getting the information if its not second hand?
Stevia cannot be patented, so it does not have the profit potential of artificial sweeteners. And because it’s much safer, it represents a threat to the multi-billion-dollar artificial sweetener industry. So, these companies have used their lobbying power to wage a campaign against it. And despite the fact that stevia has been used safely for centuries, it was BANNED by the FDA for years - and was even subjected to armed seizures of its manufacturing and storage facilities.
I have not seen any peer reviewed journals on stevia being bad for your neurologicals but it would not surprise me if one was produced by one of the multi-billion-dollar artificial sweetener industries manufacter.

Stevia is no longer banned, but it can only be marketed as a “dietary supplement.” It cannot be sold as a “sweetener” or used as a “food additive.” That’s why you don’t see it in foods, tea, and soft drinks (as it is used in other countries).

You have to be careful not to over water the stevia plants so put the plants where there is good drainage. They also tend to tip over easily so if they are outside and it is windy support them with sticks or something.
I put the plants in full sun and they grew pretty good.
